To save money on gas, some hybrids are definitely the best way to go. (http://www.mysanantonio.com/business/stories/MYSA070707.01J.AllAboutCars.2c11926.html)

Unlike last year, when there were long waiting lists for the Prius, plenty of the gas-saving vehicles are available now, and some are even being discounted.

With gasoline prices pushing $3 a gallon, it's a challenge for some of us to keep the tanks full on those big pickups and SUVs we Texans are so fond of.

My personal pickup, for instance, a Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab, has a 26-gallon tank and EPA ratings of 14 miles per gallon city/18 highway. If the tank is nearly empty, it takes about $70 to fill it.

My sister Karen, a university Spanish and linguistics professor in Tennessee, has a new car whose gas mileage puts my truck's to shame.

In May, she bought a Toyota Prius — the most popular gasoline-electric hybrid.

That car's EPA fuel-economy estimates (using the pre-2008 computation criteria) are 60 mpg city/51 highway, although most owners report average mileage of about 50 mpg in everyday use.

During a recent visit to San Antonio, my sister was bragging about how she'd owned her Prius for over a month yet had only put gas in it twice. The gas gauge on her dash moves ever so slowly toward empty — unlike mine, which I swear I can see dropping as I drive. Her tank holds 12 gallons, so it costs her less than half what it costs me to fill up.
