This is so general that it's actually on-topic for www.cleanmpg.com (http://www.cleanmpg.com) and many other things about life in general.
People simply want to do as they wish and not take responsibility for their actions. They want it both ways.
Several times it has been mentioned that someone complains about the price of gas, yet they insist on speeding around in some huge five-liter vehicle. That's denial.
Recently there has been a thread on tailgaters. Someone finally spoke up that many of these people are simply driving rudely and often illegally. It happens even when you are on the rightmost lane on a six-lane freeway. Some even pass on the shoulder! Should I feel guilty when drivers act like that?
I've had this situation on pet forums a few times. Someone wants to get a pit bull as a guard dog. This breed is not mean, but a few people have given them such a bad reputation they are banned in Ontario and a number of cities. It's cheaper to have a security system with no risk of lawsuits. One person in particular I could just picture having the jacked up pickup truck to go along with the guard dog to prove he is a bad a$$.
We live in a society that allows us to do pretty much what we want to. My problem is when other's actions cost me taxpayers's money, kill others, interfere with my peace.
If you want to do what you want - fine. But if that makes you a problem, fix your mess!
