Absent-minded slowpokes who putter along in the left lane, beware! A spitting-mad caravan of speeders is on your tail, and they're sending you a clear message: MOVE OVER.

The grass-roots group Left Lane Drivers of America is out to reclaim the left lane for true speeders and push any dawdlers to slower, right-hand lanes. With vinyl signs stretched across the tops of their windshields reading "Move Over" - and arrows pointing to the right lanes - these drivers are taking to the streets to spread the good word.

"The idea came to me out of frustration," said J.A. Tosti, who spearheaded the movement three months ago. "Everyone has probably asked themselves, `Boy, I wish there was a way I could tell the guy in front of me to move over.' I think it's a common sentiment."

I think this is a case of "strange bedfellows", or "unlikely allies". Tell that guy to make about 1000 "Move Over" signs pointing the other way, and we'll have the fellas put 'em in the cleanmpg store.

Heh. That, or they're part of the Anti-hypermiler club.

Don't know if other states have similar laws but in Colorado it is state law to use the left most lane for passing only, and you should move right when not passing. Seems reasonable.

42-4-1013 (1) - Passing lane
(Left Lane Law)
“A person shall not drive a motor vehicle in the passing lane of a highway if the speed limit is sixty-five miles per hour or more unless such person is passing other motor vehicles that are in a nonpassing lane or turning left, or unless the volume of traffic does not permit the motor vehicle to safely merge into a nonpassing lane.”

“Nonpassing lane” - Any lane that is to the right of the passing lane if there are two or
more adjacent lanes of traffic moving in the same direction in one roadway.

“Passing lane” - The farthest to the left lane if there are two or more adjacent lanes of traf-
fic moving in the same direction in one roadway; except that, if such left lane is restricted
to high occupancy vehicle use or is designed for left turns only, the passing lane shall be
the lane immediately to the right of such high occupancy lane.

I don't have a problem with the concept. American drivers have pretty lousy lane discipline as a whole, and if wakes a few people up and encourages them to stay towards the right unless they're going around slower drivers, the roads work better for everyone, including hypermilers.

But a big sticker with "MOVE OVER ->" is just going to encourage more aggressive driving. I fully expect that the first one of these I see will be plastered across the front of a big full size pickup. Probably a Dodge.

I'm with mparrish. Print up a bunch with normal text and the arrow pointing left, and sign me up for one to slap on my back window.

Just another way for aggressive drivers to get a little ego boost IMO.

I saw something similar a few years ago. Across the top of the front windshield of a big ol' truck was printed "MERGE RIGHT".

To me, this just screams "I'm a habitual speeder". Too bad cops don't patrol the highways anymore. :(

Many people seem to think that the high speed lanes are the furthest left lane and the furthest right lane. They are used for high speed cruising, not just passing. Slow traffic stays in the middle lanes. The worst place for this IMHO is I84 in CT.

on I94 here in minnesota we have signs along the side of the road that read "slower vehicles use the right lane".

notice how they show the guy right on someone's butt. there is no hope for mankind.

Although all lanes on the freeway have the same speed limit, any lane should be expected to go 65 mph... Drivers not driving the speed limit can be cited for impeding traffic. The CHP has issued 16 tickets for that so far this year in Los Angeles County.WTF! Man am I glad I don't live in California. Drive 66 and you get slapped with a speeding ticket, drive 64 and you get slapped with a impeding ticket.

Those guys are brutal.

Luckily in Texas you get about a 20 mph buffer. Back when the speed limit was 65 there used to be "Minimum speed 45 mph" signs. They seemed to take them all down when they bumped it to 75. Haven't seen a posted minimum for over 20 years now.

For the Texans here, I've called TxDOT and talked to an officer. Texas law states that minimum speed is only required when posted. He of course encouraged me to drive in the right lane (which I do). In response to the Texas impeding law, I was told that a citation could not be issued for impeding traffic from speeding. I was further told that driving above the speed limit any any lane in Texas is illegal.

Edit: Posted a comment to the stories blog (http://www.insidesocal.com/theride/2007/06/group_to_reclaim_left_lane_as.html), we'll see if it passes moderation.

I don't know the wording of it, but that is how it is in Illinois also

something tells me if a cop notices that sticker and pulls that guy over for speeding he isn't getting out of the ticket...

It seems to be that way in NJ, too, especially with so many 3-lane stretches. Makes it nice and easy to cruise in the right lane, and pass the dense, conservative middle-laners on the downhills. 'Course then you have the fun of dealing with mergers every mile or so. :( But hey, any excuse to keep it a bit below speed limit...

Some years ago I saw a woman driving a little Toyota MR2 with the personalized license plate "BARFLY". I thought that was REALLY stupid, probable cause right there to get pulled over and tested for DUI.

I agree, it just screams "I SPEED ALL THE TIME!"I suspect most of us here are old enough remember when there was enough law enforcement density that people actually worried about getting speeding tickets. Back then, you'd have been an idiot to put a sticker like that on your car, and most people knew it. Now your chance of getting pulled over is so small no one cares anymore.
