There has been talk of Ford introducing vehicles that can run on gas or E85. What about running on CNG and even compressed air?

This may not be that practicle, but it would be lower tech. Have a gas/compressed air vehicle. Use a cylinder of compressed air like an "assist" to get it up to highway speed, then switch to gas when it can burn cleaner.

I'm aware that all the compressed air vehicles so far have been subcompact.

There's already thousands of vehicles running around in Phoenix that are "duel fuel" in that they can run on propane or gasoline. Why are there thousands? Oh, well because one of our dirty politicians put in a 50% government rebate for anyone who buys a dual fuel vehicle, then promptly purchased two suburbans and like three heavy-duty trucks for his family and collected over $100,000 or something in tax rebates. Well it took approximately three weeks for Joe Public to catch on, costing the state tens of millions of dollars in tax rebates before they repealed the law. They aren't cost effective in the real world, and no one ever runs on propane here. Oh, the real kicker? All these "dual fuel" vehicles running on 100% gasoline all the time get special license plates that let them use the carpool lane with a single occupant. Seriously, they should have killed that bas***d that put the law in place.
