I was looking for the speaker schedule for Hybridfest.

Anyone know who's presenting?

Hey Dan, you want to do a presentation?

Heh. I bet you could get fit in if you ask nicely. As for an official list, I don't think it is done yet.

Dan

I could stand in for second string, but I figured some of the big hitters would be at bat, so there's not much I could add to that.

The Plano Expo was fun was fun though. Big fish, little pond... Well three big fish to be precise.

The question is, what kind of speakers and subject matter
is HF looking for? As I said, I could go on all day about
Prius innards, but it appears that they want Big Names.

I personally would like some more technical type talks along with the more general info.

We [Mike D. and I] have got better than the lever -- we've
got the real thing, with a crank stuck on it. And another
one of the real thing with little motors to drive the parts
and watch relative rotation. And battery innards, coolant
bottles, inverter modules, etc etc. It's almost at the
level of what the Argonne guys brought last year, now that
I think about it...

That's pretty much what I was thinking of doing. There's enough false information out there and enough people who really don't understand hybrid technology. I was thinking of doing an hour on hybrid technologies and debunking some of the bad press.

Eric,
Is that fine? Do you have a topic you want me to talk one. I figure that as a central point of contact for all speakers, you would know if there's too much of one topic and not enough of another. If there's anything in particular you want me to speak about, just let me know and I'll whip something up.

Here's a very elegant debunk of CNW to add to your toolkit. I've been hestant to post it since CNW posts are rather taboo as of late:

The essance of the argument is to simply change the headline from
"Prius Outdoes Hummer in Environmental Damage" to "3 Prius Combined Outdoes 1 Hummer in Environmental Damage" which is in line with unconventional wisdom.

Much easier than trying to site reliability studies of Toyota -vs- GM.

Good feedback from everyone on this thread. Thanks! I especially appreciate all the people in the hybrid community who have come forward to offer their time and talent to make Hybridfest great. In fact, so many people have come forward offering to speak at Hybridfest, I'm pretty sure we won't have time and space for them all... but we're trying!

Big names do have their place but there is also an important place for well-known hybrid community people, too.

The idea behind the speaker sessions that are open to the public on Saturday and Sunday is to sort of spilt things up in two ways:
1) General, higher level brief sessions. These will be done in an area on the main Exhibit Hall floor. Some possible examples could be things like "Top Ten Hybrid Car Myths", or "5 ways to Improve Your Fuel Economy". This stage will also be where opening comments and other announcements will take place.
2) More in-depth sessions that are a bit longer. These will be in an upstairs conference room. Some examples of actual topics are "Plug-in Hybrids: Drive with the Wind: Run with the Sun", "Energy Requirements for PHEVs"

As I mentioned in a previous post, completely separate from the sessions mentioned above are the pre-show Sunday Workshops that are only available to Hybridfest Members. CleanMPG has volunteered to help coordinate these workshops and as they get firmed up we'll see more posted on the Hybridfest Sunday Workshop thread (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/events-and-gatherings/t-hybridfest-sunday-workshops-4325.html).

Hobbit, the stuff you have is great and we will find a place for it, believe me. That said, I don't want you to end up confined to one booth for all day on Saturday and Sunday. Mix. Mingle. Enjoy the show. It sounds like Wayne is working some time out for you on Sunday during the member-only sessions and I'm sure we'll talk more about other ideas. :)

Tony, I'll give you a call next week and we can talk some more about what is needed and when. I may need to fill some slots on the main floor stage. This is where more general topics will be presented. Presentation can be bit shorter than what is needed in the upstairs conference room.

It's hard to believe that even with 2 and-a-half days available, I'm still pretty sure we won't be able to fit in everything we want to. Dang!

I'm gonna resurrect this thread a little to float another idea.
At this point I've got *tons* of pictures kicking around, that
all relate to the whole "prius experience" and even a few non-
prius items. Everything from my in-depth techie shots and reworks
of stuff from the Argonne papers, to various gatherings and events
and scenes from the road. Over 300 pix and growing as I dig
around on the laptop and find more of them. I've scripted up a
running slideshow of these, which simply displays them at 5-second
[or some selectable] intervals in a completely random order every
time it runs. At this point it takes about half an hour to run
once, then restarts and re-randomizes the display order so it
could continue to be entertaining as the viewer starts to realize
they've seen something before.
.
The idea is twofold: first, video wallpaper. Just a bunch of
fun-with-hybrids scenes, that sometimes logically follow each
other and sometimes starkly contrast as the thing runs. Something
to either have running at a show booth, or maybe even around a
room while people were eating to give them something to watch
if they're not having deep conversations. The second silly
activity could be me standing up next to this and attempting
to explain each one within 5 seconds as it goes by, or at least
hint at what it's about. Something like that might be entertaining
when it goes from "warp-neutral scream down a hill in Pennsylvania"
to "sticky goop in the inverter cooling channels".
.
Anyways, it's something that's available if you want a little
relevant filler here and there; it's pretty much gotta run off
my laptop since all the pix are on it and the script is unix-based
and runs "xv" fullscreen with a filename order randomizer backend.
We were having some fun with it at Ollie's house party the other
weekend.
.
I'm sure Mike could come up with equivalent stuff for the Insight
and related battery stuff, too! Between us and the things we
were collecting for the training effort, there's just *scads*
of material.
.

I like the idea of it running in the background...before you (or others) speak, at the banquets as a conversation starter, etc. If you wanna work in a 5 second explaination thing than might be fun for a few pix, but could be come a little ridiculous after about 15-20 I would think.

Looks like we'll have Hobbit's slide show during the Saturday coctail hour and Banquet.

I am still looking for short 10 minute presenters on high level topics of general interest to the public. These sessions would be on the Exhibit Hall stage. (I have slots on Saturday or Sunday.) Anyone want some time to present a topic. No projector. Just you the mic.

Some topics already being covered
- Hows and why of hypermiling
- Top 5 Tips For Better Mileage (from Hummers to Hybrids)
- Comparisons of hybirds vs non-hybrids

Two things:

As a money saver, I didn't sign up for the banquet. Is it too late to change my mind?

What do you mean by "high level topics of general interest to the public?" High level implies to me something of a technical nature that's of interest to a specialized audience. Anyway, compared with most of the folks here and who you have lined up, I'm a rank amateur. But I've been known to enter a room mouth first when it's full of people, a stage, and a microphone. If you need a filler of a low level topic that can be covered by a relatively uneducated semi-redneck non-tree-hugger from Virginia who just enjoys driving his Prius for maximum mileage and prays he can one day figure out a wee bit more than how to start it, let me know if I can help.

First. Yep, just send an email to the official hybridfest address info@hybirdfest.com explaining your situation. Then send us a check to the address on the contact page. (http://www.hybridfest.com/contact.htm)

Second, I guess "high level" is confusing. Sorry about that.
I meant general interest that the public would understand. For instance "Hybrids 101 - What is a hybrid." Or "5 things my hybird has taught me", or "What is E85?", or "What is biodiesel", "Lessons from the Hybridfest MPG Challenge." etc. Nothing too complex. Something that can be conved in 15 minutes or less.

This is a chance for one or more instructors to show off their stuff in their own vehicles if they don’t mind the student taking a lap and a half of the Clinic course.

___I also hope I did not miss anyone and I sure wish Tarabell, Tim and Marc could have made it out :(

___Feel free to change the titles of the presentations as you see fit. I just started shooting from the hip and we know how far from the target that kind of shooting usually ends up ;) If there are any other problems with the arrangements above, feel free to contact me at your earliest convenience.

People sometimes use "high level" and "low level" interchangeably
and one often has to ask "do you mean the 30,000 foot overview
or the bare-metal details?"
.
Another distinction that may want to be made is about the "slide
show". There are two bodies of presentable material -- one is
the training slides I pointed to recently, which I expect a subset
of with a few embellishments will be for the actual tech talk
at HF. The other is just a large collection of "prius pr0n",
pictures taken from all over the place, that display randomly
changing every five seconds. We were thinking of using the
latter as amusing wallpaper during dinner [sans commentary], and
then get down to serious, structured stuff using the former.
.
And I'm probably going to have to reboot in between!

Now after seeing what Wayne has posted, I don't want to miss Hobbit and Wayne M. Saturday evening. But again, if you need a low level -- entry level, to be clear -- filler and it can be done without missing them, how about "Hybrids: not just for techies and greenies." Subtitled, "How a relatively uneducated semi-redneck non-tree-hugger from Virginia who just enjoys driving his Prius for maximum mileage and prays he can one day figure out a wee bit more than how to start it came to drive a hybrid -- and why." :)

Wayne, It looks like some very interesting information is going to be available to all. I just recently realized that, due to the time difference where I live and the fact that I have to be up at 3:30 am(2:30 am your time:() Monday morning, that I'll need to start heading home shortly after the training sessions end. It took nearly 4 hours to get home from Wadsworth last week and I can see a potential for 2-3 hours or more extra time to get back from Madison at Hypermiling speed.;) It looks like the time I am there is going to be well worth it. Keep me posted on the hotel arrangements/locations. There is a possibility that I may get to come Friday for the FE Challenge, if not, I'll be getting there around midnight Saturday morning. I can't believe it's only ~2 weeks away!:)

55?! I'm no speed demon.;):D On the way back from your house I stayed around 50 with occasional bursts to 55 and ended up with 71.1. I think if I'm home by 8:00 CST I should be ok.

So, does anyone have one of those wireless "presenter" widgets
that plugs into a PC mouse port [or *maybe* USB if it doesn't
need any drivers loaded] and lets someone advance slides from
a distance? I poked around in the 'pooter store today and
they've only got some big klunky thing from Kensington for way
too much money, and I'm thinking the nice small units with a
couple of forward/back buttons and maybe a built-in laser pointer.
If someone's got one that we can use, I won't bother hunting
around for my own.. it's that or go over and hit the spacebar
on the actual laptop.
.
oh, and hopefully some nice long VGA cables will be with the
projector...

can't you just click a mouse button to advance? Could you just use one of those small wireless mice?

I have one (USB) you're welcome to use. I don't think it requires drivers loaded from outside, but I can't remember for sure. It's been awhile since I first used it. Now, if I just remember to pack it.... ;)

hobbit
07-09-2007, 07:03 PM
Yeah, you can do about anything on the machine itself to
advance -- leftmouse, spacebar, return, right-arrow, etc..
but it's often the case in these setups that one's laptop
winds up tethered to wherever the projector has to sit via
a piteously short video cable, and it isn't always the most
convenient thing to walk over to *it* to get the next slide.
Just thinking ahead a little, to head off equipment limitations.
It's also kind of fun to use one of the small units with the
pointer built in... *click* "now, right here (*wiggle wiggle*)
is the battery-current sensor..."
.
Oh, and in case it's not clear, I *am* talking about a windoze
box and PPT [which I can do when necessary, believe it or not].

This is getting away from "speaker schedule" in a big way but
this seems to be the most recent continuing HF thread, and I
can't seem to find the info elsewhere. Where is the "cruise-in"
on Thursday night, and is the Chicago contingent planning on
attending? I'm shooting to construct my travel schedule to
arrive in the north-chicagoland area Thursday afternoon, and
that would be a nice kickoff event to sort of "land" at.
.
If I should try to arrive at some different time, by all means
please advise... maybe we should start a different thread for
HF travel logistics.

Hi Hobbit,

I found this thread over on PC posted by Eric about the May gathering, it contains info about the July 19th gathering too. 5-9PM at the quaker steak and lube restaurant in middleton (basically west side of madison).

Yep.
Cruise-in is in a Madison,WI suburb called Middleton.

Quaker Steak & Lube.

Featured hybrid will be the Toyota Prius. We are also working to get a Lexus GS 600h L to the cruise that night.

5 – 9pm at the Quaker Steak & Lube in Middleton, WI.

There is a car wash just down the street if you need to do some last minute cleaning. Map: http://tinyurl.com/yvevm9

Not sure who from the Wayne's house crew is coming up that night. I know Billy will be there. Hmmm.. perhaps need a new thread for this. Ok. I'll start one.
