Hello to all D$W/MiHG members and friends,

Two more Meets-plus, to go and that’ll wrap up our 2011 transition year of the Drive #mart Wisconsin/MiHG group. The plus in that sentence is our, much anticipated, annual Electric Block Heater Install Party. Once again we’ll be meeting at Tom Brunka’s garage on the northeast side of Milwaukee on Saturday Nov. 12th. In addition to installing EBH’s, Tom has offered his services to perform oil changes, lubrication, filters and tune-ups for those that desire those services. If you are interested in attending, please email me before Nov. 1st and I’ll get you additional details. EBH costs are $40 for the unit and $25 installation for any year Prius and Camry Hybrid. Wonderful deal since dealer cost for the same service is over $250. I’ve attached 2 articles that state the importance of having an Electric Block Heater in getting the best mileage throughout the year.

As part of our preparation for winter, Wayne Mitchell and Tom Brunka will give us a segment on how to prepare your vehicles for winter. The essence of this segment is that there are many things you can do to mitigate the effects of cold weather and continue to get the best mileage through out winter. This is an essential segment as we move into winter.

Congratulations are due to Wayne Gerdes who will also be sharing with us a short segment on his setting a new Guinness World Record for 48 Contiguous Fuel Economy Record. Wayne will give us some insight to the challenges that he and co driver Chris Bernius had to endure to achieve the 64.55 MPG average over 7900 miles in a 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid. With all the records that Wayne holds, this may have been the hardest to document. Some additional info is below:

One last thing, we want to congratulate Ben Nelson in the formation of the Wisconsin Electric Vehicle Association. Ben has been our shining star in converting conventional vehicles into all electric vehicles and he has gathered local enthusiasts to build a formal structure to pursue their passion. I know that there are some of our D$A/MiHG members that have a small or moderate interest in EV conversions and now you have a formal outlet in which to get involved with. I apologize that by the time you receive this email, they have already had their first Meet, but others will follow. See the attachment for Ben’s description of this new organization. If you want further details feel free to contact Ben at:

For our first timers, here’s the way things generally work at a meet. We begin to gather in the Library parking lot about 9:15am to schmooze and show off our vehicles. If the weather is good, we’ll begin check-in and our VTP’s (Vehicle Tire Pressures) at that time. At 10:00am we’ll begin to setup our room and by 10:20 we should be set to begin our introduction round robin and/or a “Fuel for Thought” quiz. We’ll have a short session and then take a short break for snacks and item sales. We’ll then have our main session and offer some updates, reviews, news, short subjects and door prizes and then break for lunch about 12:00 pm. After our potluck lunch, we’ll begin our Drive $mart sessions about 12:30 pm and begin cleanup. Beverages and utensils will be supplied but we encourage all attending to bring some food to share. (Main dishes are greatly appreciated). Be prepared to be gracious, with the understanding that the agenda usually does not follow the timeline.

Too bad it's a 1000-mile drive. I'd love to come.

Thanks for the kind words Andrew and Mike. We have a great group here and I'm sure you would have a wonderful time with us. I appreciate you both taking the time to share your thoughts.

To be honest though, we are so fortunate that we are in an area that has the resources of Wayne Gerdes and Wayne Mitchell and many others who are interested to sharing their knowledge and passion with us. It's very hard work to sustain this activity for over 5 years and still have 25-50 members at each Meet, but we've been successful because we realize that we are all teachers and students in learning to drive $marter and Safer!

Keep in our loop...

Hi All:

I am currently rendering a 12 minute vid to present at the Oct. 2011 Meeting of the Drive$mart WI gathering this morning. I hope it does not crash my PC as it is a large number of pics and vids from various camera’s at different resolutions all being spliced together into a culmination.

Boy do I hope this works

Hi All:

Another great meet and I hope to attend many more...

Wayne Mitchell trained a couple with a 2011 Prius. After their clinic, each had achieved 75 + mpg around the meet locations many roads.

On the way home, the old Accord with new GoodYear Assurance FuelMax's still has what it takes in 55 to 56 degree temps and crosswinds of 25 mph the entire way home.
