Hi All:

Care to guess what this 2.0L EcoBoost was in to acheive the following result?

Ford aFCD's are usually dead on too!!!

From the picture on the display, I'm thinking it's an Edge.

Hi Colin:

That is right, all 4,000 pounds of her! Never before have I received that level of FE from a vehicle this large before.

Wayne,

What sort of simliarities did you see in the Edge versus the F-150 equipped EcoBoost? The trucks ability to plod along at 1,000rpm without a downshift has been probably more impressive than any other part of the trucks performance. Also, I'm assuming that this was a fairly steady state set of driving conditions? What are the strictly city driving figures looking like for the edge?

Wayne,

I'm curious, when you say that Ford's aFCD's are usually accurate, why it is that my Fiesta is not only inaccurate but inconsistent. Some tanks it it high by several mpgs and other it is low. Of course now I'm fasing and it reads low no matteer what.

I think that's more a function of the gas pumps than the car. If you track the average over several tanks it should be close. (except for FAS, of course)

Now if only they would put one of these engines in a full size cargo van and the real full size pickups we could actually save some fuel in this country. It'd ridiculous how bad the gas mileage is in the big trucks. We used to have good diesel options but not anymore. My F450's have gone from high teens MPG to under ten in two generations of trucks (all diesel). The crappy V-10, and we all know what kind of mileage that gets, is now even with the diesels. How about an econoline with the 3.5l eco-boost? If I could get 15mpg that would be a 30% improvement over the diesel and almost double the gas powered ones.

Hi Ed:

You may want to read the following regarding Ford’s latest 6.7L Power Stroke…

2011 Ford Super Duty Press Launch (cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29847)

I am sure somebody could get it down to 10 mpg if they were towing 25,000 pounds but in our drive of that engine in the Super Duty, whooaaa! Think 30 mpgUS + from one of the largest PU’s on the road! Forget about the 6.2 as that is an FSP but the turbo diesel is out of this world efficient considering what it was built to do.

I would guess yes but does the Edge, Escape & C-Max use the same 2.0 EB engine ?

Hi Rfruth:

While here will be some minor differences, AT, mounting and cooling requirements and location of ancillary HW, the engine itself will probably be identical.

Ford is onto something with the EcoBoost lineup. While not the European Super Diesels in terms of efficiency, they do provide a lot of power and decent fuel economy to boot.

Hi Wayne

I was at my Ford dealer today and took the '12 Explorer Limited 2.0L EB out for a test ride. I took my SGII out of my 3.5L Explorer to get a comparison of MPG and this was what I found. The difference in power was better in my 3.5L, but still impressive for the 2.0L EB. During my ~10 mile drive in city and highway, I could not get complete fuel-cut with 9,999mpg like in my 3.5L Explorer, but it was going open-loop with ~100mpg during deceleration. Did you see complete DFSO in the Edge 2.0L EB you tested?

Comparing both vehicles with the A/C On, I do better with my 3.5L as far as MPG. Rhonda will not drive without the A/C, so it also stays ON when I drive the Explorer also. I notice the 2.0L EB idles at a stop at around 720rpm's, and my 3.5L is at ~600. I didn't see much difference at highway speeds other than the lack of complete fuel-cut in the 2.0L EB. Driving the EB the same way I drive my 3.5L, I'd say this first test drive got about 4mpg less MPG. It's clear to me, I would have to change my driving style driving the two different engines. It maybe that the EB will not go complete fuel-cut with the A/C ON like my 3.5L. I know my new Focus will go complete fuel-cut with the A/C with that 2.0L DI, so something maybe wrong with the Explorer I tested today.
