Friend of mine is interested in fuel efficentcy wanted to learn more. I directed him to CleanMPG for general info, and suggested he find the PriusChat equivalent for the 2000 Corolla.

Anyone know a good nonHybrid Corolla forum?

It had a decent following of owners but none who pushed tanks way back then … I googled Corolland and saw a link to a Corolla forum at Tundrasolutions. Another one would be Toyotanation but again, I would not know of the content is worth my time let alone your friends?

___Is there anything your friend may be interested in wrt a Corolla? My oldest boy drives the 03 w/ Auto and even today it can be hypermiled with the best of them. Throw a stick in the darn thing and there would be a lot of 60 + mpg tanks with the right driver and route coming from one.

I read about you and the Prius records yesterday (great job!) and then another guy mentioned your name today and that you had been getting 50 mpg in a Corolla. Well, it looks like after having read the above that maybe your son has the Corolla?

Anyway, I've got an '04 Corolla LE with a 5 speed. I'm no hypermiler ... but I'm here to learn dog-gone-it!

So far, the best I can do on my daily commute is ~39.75 mpg. I think that's not so good. That's with no A/C, but I also do a lot of other tricks to increase mpg.

The one thing I'm doing right now that I have high hopes for is a new shift pattern. If I'm getting on a 55 mph road and plan on doing 55 mph, I know that my r.p.m. at 55 mph in 5th gear is ~ 2,200.

So what I'm trying is to shift every gear at 2,200. Therefore I never go higher rpm the rpm required to hold max speed. Not sure what impact I'm going to have, but I'll see.

I do already the following things: But please feel free to add your input, I'm here to learn.


Air the tires up to ~37 cold
Don't carry around any extra stuff
Time the traffic lights
Make turns from one road to the other at as high a speed as I can that is safe in order to minimize momentum loss
I use the cruise control relentlessly
I cancel the cruise waaaaay back and let the car coast down to the speed I either want to go through the intersection with, or a very slow speed and then apply service brakes to stop.
I gear down to keep the rpm's high enough to ensure the computer doesn't add fuel to sustain idle ... and to also aid with braking a bit.
I don't pass anyone on 2 lane roads, unless their speed is ridiculously slow, or their car is making a smelly stinky mess
I don't idle the car any more than I have to.
I use the A/C sparingly, or put the windows down. P.S. I roll the front and rear window down on my side to eliminate the buffeting in my ear ... its very nice that way.
Keep a good clean air filter on the car
Keep the oil & filter changed every 5,000 miles.

___My Corolla is in my sons hands but he just doesn’t drive it right ;)

___Here is a very short preview of a review I am setting up for the 03 – 07 Corolla’s with Automatics.

Corolla LE w/ Auto: 613.7 miles/12.456 gallons = 49.26 mpg - Temps from 25 - 51 degrees F. 40 degree Average.

___There is a lot more where that came from when temps warm up too!

I would imagine there was a lot of putt-putting around, huh? I guess the way I feel right now is that I'm the only person in Montgomery (AL) that has any care to use as little fuel as is needed. If I'm the first person on the line at a stop light, everybody expects me to launch my car off the line when the light turns green like I'm Don Garlits or Don Prudhome or the like. They're ready to pull a gun on me because they had to lift their right foot off the floor. SUV driver's are the worst.

With that in mind, I feel like I need to do the speed limit (depending on traffic). Slower than that and I feel like I'm being disrespectful to the traffic that has piled up on my rear bumper.

So, I want the best fuel mileage I can achieve at the speed limits. And I'm ready to "fall-in" to hyper-mileage boot camp. Sir, let me know where to report, sir! ;)

Well... I seem to get my best numbers in the 40-50mph range, which is just right for around-town speed limits.

I'd also like to find a good Civic forum. So far the ones I've found are all ricer-oriented.

Yessir, the toyotanation Corolla section are ricers who are buying up CAIs & K&N filters to get that extra 2 h.p. edge over the competition (Kia Rio). I don't care about that. Nobody on there gives a rat's behind about economy ... or even reliability.

JyRO___First, I assume you are running the OEM GY Integrity’s (there was another brand on the Corolla’s but I forgot which now?) and I would be running 50 + all around myself. 60 is what I take all my sedans to but that is just me … As for putting around, a Corolla with a stick should be good for the high 70’s to low 80’s putting around but you are not going to achieve that kind of fuel economy unless you own the road. You will also not receive decent fuel economy if you are on the brakes at every light, on the gas enough to make the tach run up much beyond 2.5K on every accel, or punching her up to 70 mph every time you hit the highway either. If you drive without a care, you may be lucky to achieve the EPA but you have many other options to take you far beyond those numbers if you want it ;) You have to find a balance that matches your commute and your style but a Corolla once setup in warmer temps is an easy 53 at 50. What you do beyond that is up to you …

Woohoo from me too! I couldn't get Corollaland through the work firewall for some reason. Either they took it off the block list, or Firefox is even better than I thought it was... Anyway, I'm off to scan through the site...
