View Full Version : Week of June 13th - June 19th, 2011 (Nat Avg $3.72)
Right Lane Cruiser 06-13-2011, 06:58 AM Welcome back to the grind!! The national average for a gallon of regular gas is down $0.06 since last Monday.
I've got more working from home to do today so no commute numbers for me!
lxmike 06-13-2011, 08:16 AM I'm still "working" from the library :( hopefully i'll have my i-mac back today.
Tank sitting at 78.7- 726.9 mile and 2 bars on the fuel guage. low fuel light not on yet, but i've already decided to fill up on wed when I'll make 750 miles.
nearly had another 100 mpg trip saturday. was coming down my street and someone was coming behind me. I was rolling at 7-8 mph and bumb staretd and picked up a few mph so they wouldn't be held up and ended up with 99.x! :o
I did find out that an insight can roll along at 18-19 mph in 4th gear with no gas pedal needed when warming up. fcd is showing 95-100 mpg.
Die2self 06-13-2011, 08:34 AM filled up the Fit on Friday after getting it back from the body shop. I will post the numbers later.
New tank is up to 46.3 over 28.8 miles so far.
PaleMelanesian 06-13-2011, 08:41 AM Saturday:
97.0 mpg / 9.0 mi - to a friend's house for game night.
88.6 / 9.3 - back home
Sunday
77.5 / 25.2 - to another friend's for a group meeting
84.1 / 25.3 - back home
This morning
85.2 / 10.6 - home to work
That brings the tank up to 82.3 / 401 miles and about 3/4 on the gauge.
Die2self 06-13-2011, 01:15 PM first fill on the Silver Wedge.
First fill:
356.4 miles
9.095 Gals (@ first click which I am sure what they used to fill the tank before they gave it to me)
9.322 Gals (what I normally do is 2 more clicks after the first shut off click)
39.2 MPG or 38.2 MPG
As compaired to the FCD of 42.3 (I will have to figure out the adjustment, unless some one has already figured that our for a 2011 Fit.)
Ok for the first tank, improvements to come ;)
Right Lane Cruiser 06-13-2011, 04:19 PM Nice going, Mike! I too hope that your iMac is fixed soon. :(
Jason, no telling what was done to the tank before the car was handed over to you so I wouldn't worry too much about that first one. You'll be pulling even more stellar numbers very soon!! :D
Andrew, there you go again with the Insight driver impersonation! :woot:
diamondlarry 06-13-2011, 04:33 PM Hey Sean, should we issue Andrew a citation for Insight impersonation?:D Very nice work Andrew!
Mike, good job. I may have to try that 4th gear thing next time I drive since I live in a small town and the PSL is pretty close to that speed.
Not bad at all Jason considering what the car has been through already.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-14-2011, 06:39 AM No citations -- an award would be more appropriate! :)
The traffic very nearly put a kabosh on my string of 120+mpg commutes to work this morning!
60F, 6mph cross/headwind from the ESE, sunny:
120.5mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)
The tank is now up to 105.2mpg over 863.2mi with 12 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
PaleMelanesian 06-14-2011, 08:14 AM Well, you'd better cite me again, then! :p Summer is here to stay. Temps are good (=hot). Traffic is light with school out.
83.5 home last night. 101F. hotter inside the car.
89.2 to work this morning. 80F.
The tank is up to 82.5 / 420 miles and 3/4 tank remaining.
diamondlarry 06-14-2011, 08:18 AM Well, you'd better cite me again, then! :p Summer is here to stay. Temps are good (=hot). Traffic is light with school out.
83.5 home last night. 101F. hotter inside the car.
89.2 to work this morning. 80F.
The tank is up to 82.5 / 420 miles and 3/4 tank remaining.
Ok Andrew, we will just have to In"cite" for that kind of behavior.:D Very nice!
diamondlarry 06-14-2011, 08:47 AM I just got word that I will have a commute again for a few days.:woot: My wife called and said there is some product that needs some labels put on them. Not sure how long but most likely it won't be longer than the end of this week.
PaleMelanesian 06-14-2011, 08:50 AM Hey, that's great! Even a little something can help.
diamondlarry 06-14-2011, 08:54 AM That's for sure Andrew! And as a little bonus, I don't have to hurry home like the last time.;) :woot: :)
diamondlarry 06-14-2011, 12:39 PM I hadn't driven since Saturday so I thought I might try some route recon today for my next round of temp work at my wife's shop. I had 68F when I started and 70F when I got back home. Wind was ESE@ 10 mph with gusts to 21 mph.
116.5 11.1(to wife's work on slightly different route than usual-not too bad)
111.1 13.1(back home on a route I have never taken to get back home, although the last half was quite familiar from other trips/errands)
Day Total: 113.5mpg over 24.2mi
I saw several chances for FAS that I will be able to take advantage of now that I know they are there. Temps are forecast to be about the same the rest of the week with chances of rain tomorrow and Thursday. It should be interesting to see the effect of sitting for 9 1/2 hours on the return trip #'s and likely increased traffic at that time of day.
Die2self 06-14-2011, 01:04 PM when pulled into work today
odo 54.9 miles
fcd 47.9 (lost 0.1 on the way up from the stop sign from the highway)
Since the plastic clip is broken on the SG cable, I will try and find a replacement clip that I can put on. I can cut the cable and see what colors were on what terminal and then just put them back in the same order in the new plug.
PaleMelanesian 06-14-2011, 01:46 PM That's a good step up from 38, Jason! Keep it up.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-14-2011, 03:25 PM Great news on the temp job, Larry!!
I had one of the most interesting commutes home yet. I left about 40min early to try to beat a thunderstorm blowing into town at about the time I normally leave the office... and got stopped by most of the lights on the first half of the trip. Even though I had a good quartering tailwind I struggled to 104.5mpg at 9.4mi into the trip. I wasn't too happy with that considering the warm temps and (somewhat) favorable wind...
So where's the interesting part? Well, here's what was on the FCD when I got home:
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/594/77F_with_a_15-29mph_quartering_tailwind_from_the_SE_coming_home_from_work.jpg
The traffic pretty much melted away for the last 6mi! Doing the math, I averaged 157.6mpg over that last stretch. :D
So...
77F, 15-29mph cross/tailwind from the SE, overcast:
120.3mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home -- PR by a solid 2.6mpg!)
The tank is now up to 105.5mpg over 878.6mi with 12 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 120.5mpg over 30.4mi
It's always nice when you manage to turn what looks like a "poor" showing into something else entirely. :)
PaleMelanesian 06-14-2011, 03:41 PM Very nice, Sean!
I went to a doctor appointment after lunch.
63.6 / 4.3 mi going there
102 / 4.4 back to work
The tank is up a tick to 82.6 / 430 miles.
Round trip was 78.6 mpg, not 82.8 as a straight average would show. The 63 segment used more fuel and so it affects the average more than 102 segment.
ksstathead 06-14-2011, 03:53 PM Biked to work today. Dropped bike at bike shop at lunch for tune up.
Walking home.
MPG today "To infinity and beyond."
mikewithaprius 06-14-2011, 08:32 PM ksstathead, that's the best way. I got a ride to and from where I was going yesterday, good feeling.
Something like 67 mpg on the day today, it was the mandatory short trip day. I had one slightly longer route (combining trips) that was a solid 74 mpg over 13.4 miles. I then was really happy with 58.5 mpg over a really short trip home of 2.6 miles.
Good day after a tricky week that brought the tank down from 70 more toward 65. Around 66 or 67 at this point.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-15-2011, 05:53 AM Fantastic work from you as well, Andrew!
Mike, you are doing very well indeed with that Prius of yours. Keep it up! :)
I've got a pile of data to sift through for work so I'm working from home again today.
PaleMelanesian 06-15-2011, 08:35 AM mpg / mi / temp
89.4 / 10.7 / 103F - home last night
92.2 / 10.5 / 80F - to work this morning
That brings the tank way up to 82.9 / 451 miles. Still 3/4 on the gauge.
Die2self 06-15-2011, 12:54 PM Still have not fixed the SG cable.
tank is not just under F with 81.6 miles on it, FCD is displaying 47.7 Down 0.2 from yesterday with nice tailwind. Headwind today.
Harold 06-15-2011, 01:43 PM Here are my numbers from Grand Forks B.C. to Colville WA. and return yesterday at 20 C. temps. 110.5 miles at 63.2 mpg. Driving my HCH2 06 model. Haven't received my SG yet. And I should mention gas has dropped to $3.95.9 per gal. I would post picture but don't now how to! H
diamondlarry 06-15-2011, 04:34 PM Today started well with 59F (oh look, another below average temp for this time of year:rolleyes:) and almost non-existent wind. However, the end of the day...not so much. The trip home was a mere 62F with winds SE@ 10-15 mph with gusts to 30 mph. There was also a moderate rain going on; enough to require wipers on low.
101.9 9.2(to work)
77.9 11.2(back home-yeah, triple whammy of headwind, rain, and no EBH:ccry:)
alvaro84 06-16-2011, 03:12 AM After hospital trips and other not-that-pleasant things we visited a friend on Monday, 2*27.7km (17.2mi), ~28C (82F) temp, 2-up. This morning to work as usual, 24.6km. I'm going to do these commutes until Sunday (and ~1km longer on Saturday/Sunday).
This tank has 236km 2-up rides so far - it'll probably be around 50%.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-16-2011, 07:00 AM No driving for me yet today. I've a dental appointment this afternoon.
PaleMelanesian 06-16-2011, 08:24 AM 84.5 / 10.5 / 100F - home last night
88.8 / 10.5 / 80F - this morning
The tank is up again to 83.0 / 472 miles. Summer is nice for hypermiling.
diamondlarry 06-16-2011, 12:46 PM I had 61F this morning and wind was SW@ 5-10 mph (side/tail wind) on the way to work. The trip back home was 69F and the wind was SW@ 10-15 mph (side/head wind) with gusts to 25 mph. I guess I did pretty good coming home considering the headwind and the car setting for 6 1/2 hours.:)
103.6 9.2(to work)
97.7 11.7(back home)
Day Total: 100.2mpg over 20.9 miles
Die2self 06-16-2011, 01:22 PM very strange wind from the south this morning, it blew across the rubble mounts and was blowing debris in the area and looked like smoke.
That wind help to get to 48.8 MPG when I pulled into work this morning with 107.6 (about 7/8 on the gauge.) that is up 1.1 over 26.0 miles Still only NICE on coasting for the most part with P&Hangtime with some Glide (NICE-on). I have not gotten to the point of FASing without the SG hooked up to see more details. But it would seem that my years in the Truck have helped prepare me for this car.
Drive the Accord feels so heavy now and the clutch feels super heavy. The Fit is light and responsive and the clutch doesn't require any effort at all. Infact the first time I got in it (after the truck) I almost put my foot through the floor boards because it offered very littel resitance.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-16-2011, 03:01 PM Nice work, guys!!!
I took the FFH out for my drive to the dentist.
72F there, 75F back, 8mph wind from the NW, sunny:
48.5mpg for 10.8mi (Home to dentist via highway)
61.5mpg for 11.5mi (Dentist to home via back roads ;))
Day Total: 54.4mpg over 22.3mi
Not too bad... though I need to surreptitiously up the tire pressure. :D
Harold 06-16-2011, 06:30 PM RLC. Not to shabby!!! H
basjoos 06-16-2011, 07:06 PM A tale of two drives. Yesterday I drove home through that mass of severe t-storms that passed through the Southeast. Ran through 2 miles of HEAVY rain showers, then dry roads for a bit, then re-entered the storm, encountering hail, then it started heavy rain just as I entered a fog covered road surface turned white by a thick layer of fallen hail. The ice ball bearing covered surface made the car feel like it had a flat tire and it really mushed down as I drove through the thick layer of water whose drainage was impeded by the maze of hail on the road. After getting through that it was in and out of a 6 foot high layer of fog that covered just the road surface. Got home with 66 mpg dispite traveling at speeds as low of 28 mph for parts of the trip. Of course, there were the usual idiots flying past who think that having stability control and ABS on their vehicle means that they can drive just as fast under these conditions as they can on dry roads. If any of them departed the highway, I would never have known it through the thick fog over the road that was present for much of the trip.
Today it was was totally different, sunny with dry roads. Got home with 88 mpg dispite traveling mostly at speeds of 60 to 65 mph.
diamondlarry 06-16-2011, 07:10 PM My day's numbers went down the drain this afternoon.:( My son called about 2:30 pm and wanted to know if we could take his motorcycle to the shop since he got off work early. Those winds I had earlier were great going but coming back, not so much.:p The route was basically straight east and the winds were from the WSW@ 10-15 mph and still gusting to 25 mph. That, coupled with following a semi at 3+ seconds(that was actually following PSL) for about 9 miles, I was at 103.* after 15.9 miles. For the rest of the 45.2 mile trip was not so good since traffic was moderate and, it was only a 2-lane road. I ended up with just 88.1 mpg when we pulled into the shop. Going home is where everything kind of went to pieces. After 38.3 miles, I stopped in a local business parking lot to re-route my warm air intake (it got as high as 128F:eek:) and I was just a bit over 67 mpg.:ccry: The only bright spot was that when we got back underway, I let my son drive the last 6.9 miles. For his very first time behind the wheel, he managed a very respectable 104.6 mpg. I could see some of his habits from driving his own car coming out but he was better by the time we got home. For much of the trip he drove with assist disabled so the pack didn't see too much strain.
mikewithaprius 06-16-2011, 09:27 PM Larry, that is awesome you've taught your son to hypermile.
Caught every stop light to work today, but way back was a good ride. 445 mile tank now sitting at 70.0 mpg exactly on Prius MFD, probably more like 66 or 67 in reality, happy with it!
The cool thing is that after I fill up this coming Sunday, and then I drive a bit during the week, I'll take off for my 280 mile drive to my summer job, where I stay all summer and have almost no need to drive. I might go 2 months without having to fill up :woot:
Right Lane Cruiser 06-17-2011, 06:39 AM Well done, Mike (Basjoos)!!! I certainly understand your frustration with other drivers in "safe" vehicles. :(
Chin up, Larry -- you're still doing way the heck better than most everyone else on the road! Good to hear that Cobrapond is able to curb his P&G urges. ;)
Mike (MikeWithAPrius), that sounds wonderful!! I'm down to fill intervals like that but only because I've been working from home so much recently. :o
I took the Elantra to work today because I'm expecting to have lunch with friends and will have to jump on the highway (yeah, I know... just don't want to wreck my recent trend in the Insight :p). I'm definitely rusty when it comes to knowing my glide distances -- I kept coming in hotter than I like to required stops. Even so...
55F, 5mph cross/tailwind from the NE, partly cloudy:
63.6mpg for 14.6mi (Home to work -- the difference in distance to what the Insight reports is due to the P&G ECU reboots)
The tank is now up to 49.2mpg over 385.7mi with 8.2g left and the guess gauge indicates 3 needle widths under the 1/2 mark.
We are supposed to have thunderstorms starting at noon. We'll see how that goes...
diamondlarry 06-17-2011, 07:14 AM Chin up, Larry -- you're still doing way the heck better than most everyone else on the road! Good to hear that Cobrapond is able to curb his P&G urges. ;)
Thanks. It just gets frustrating sometimes, especially when I know what the car is potentially capable of. I got yesterday that I will be making a trip to Cincinnati again on Monday. I am so far into this tank that I will need to top off by Sunday night as we are going to be underway by 6:00 am (possibly before) Monday morning. It is ~280-290 miles there and I'm more than 300 miles in already. I want to avoid having to fill up down there as it's most likely that Cincy has that "poisoned" fuel as the only option.:p
PS: Was 128F a bit high for intake air temp?
Right Lane Cruiser 06-17-2011, 07:20 AM Hi, Larry -- yes, 128F is quite high. My Insight started getting grumpy at 110F with a reduction in power at lower RPM... but she sure cruised nice once at speed with ridiculous iMPG (pegged from 33mph up to 47mph... at which time I had to slow down for a light)!
I don't remember now who was asking me about my pulse loads in the Elantra but I finally remembered to turn on that gauge this morning. It doesn't seem very useful because in my car it is slow to recover from a FAS and seems to top out at 69%. When I first pulled it up I was in a pulse and it showed 67%... so I pushed harder and even floored it showed no higher than 69%.
Sorry -- that isn't very helpful. :o
I also just found out my lunch with friends has to be postponed until next week. Oh well... more practice in the Elantra. ;)
PaleMelanesian 06-17-2011, 08:27 AM Sean, I think that was dan (wri) asking with his new Touring. Can you check the MAP gauge while pulsing? On my Civic, 75-80 LOD equates to about 12 psi MAP. That might be a more useful gauge than the odd LOD that's being reported.
-------------------------
70.5 / 10.2 - work thru town, pick up pizza, to friend's house
84.7 / 11.7 - home, pick up music gear
97.6 / 9.2 - to practice
84.1 / 8.8 - back home
92.1 / 10.5 - work this morning
The tank is up to 83.2 / 523 miles.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-17-2011, 08:40 AM Sure. I'll try MAP and see what that shows.
I feel bad about using twice the fuel to commute to work this morning. :o
FSUspectra 06-17-2011, 10:04 AM It's been hotter than, well, pick your own comparison :P We broke Tallahassee's all-time record with a high of 105. It was a sauna for sure!
Today, not so bad.
84F, partly cloudy, light variable breeze
44.4 MPG / 5.9 mi home to dropoff to campus
PaleMelanesian 06-17-2011, 10:18 AM 105? #melt
We matched our record yesterday with "only" 102.
Die2self 06-17-2011, 12:46 PM numbers when I came to work this morning:
up to 49.1 MPG over 134.3 miles
Found out that our internet may not be back up and running at the house until Aug . That doesn't help my wife who is teaching to internet classes this summer.
PaleMelanesian 06-17-2011, 01:58 PM August! That's crazy! I mean, I guess it makes sense with other more important things to fix, but that's a long time.
PaleMelanesian 06-17-2011, 01:59 PM 64.1 mpg / 6.3 mi - to friend's house where we* and they are hosting a garage sale.
73.5 / 2.1 - to reset some garage sale signs that fell down
90.0 / 6.7 - back to work
It was hot.
The tank is down to 83 even.
* we meaning my wife and kids while I'm at work ;)
Right Lane Cruiser 06-17-2011, 04:05 PM I tried the MAP gauge on the way home but it seems to be similarly "odd" to the LOD gauge. During a FAS it reads 13.9 or 14.1. NICE ON shows 3-6. Accelerating I sometimes saw it in the 12.8 range (in lower gears) but mostly it stuck at at 13.6 or so. I could floor it and it wouldn't go any lower.
The reason for not paying attention to those readouts in my car is starting to come back to me. ;)
I had the usual Friday craziness to deal with on the way home. I'd like to pop it up into the 70+mpg range again but that's going to be a challenge on this route. At least I'm still keeping it up over the 60mpg mark.
76F, 9mph cross/headwind from the ENE, overcast:
60.2mpg for 15.0mi (Work to home)
The tank is now up to 49.5mpg over 400.5mi with 7.9g left and the guess gauge indicating 7/16ths.
Day Total: 61.8mpg over 29.7mi
PaleMelanesian 06-17-2011, 04:20 PM Huh. That's odd. Your results seem to work, though. Not bad for not being your normal car.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-17-2011, 04:44 PM I'll have to drive it a bit more -- my results are obviously sub-par. :o

Is it possible that the MAP sensor is reading actual atmospheric pressure which, if I remember right, is right around 14 psi?
groar 06-18-2011, 04:47 AM So good results
Max temps here are 72°F, ie colder than in may which averaged 76°F... :(
After a week between customer's and hotel, I'll have to commute again next week: my daily dose of anti-stress :)
Have fun,
Denis.
lxmike 06-18-2011, 08:11 AM Well i'm still around but also still computerless. hopefully by tuesday will be back online.
Wednesday i finaly refueled Sylvie. :D it had been so long i forgot which side the fuel door was on and was circiling the pumps! :o
Fuirst click was at 9.33 and I stopped at the second click AT 9.55 Gas pump and 751.5 miles for a figure of 78.6x mpg on my first tank. The fcd was showing 79.2 mpg. alot closer than i expected.
after i filled up and headed home i thoguth the fcd got stuck cause i was cruising along at 43 mph and was pegged at 150! i gave a lil gas and it dropped and i eased back nd it went back up. maybe good gas?? oh well. by teh time i got home i was in triple digits 110.9 to be exact! :D
since then i have been keeping it over 90 for my trips and current tank sitting at 92.8 @ 27.1 mile
excuser the typos please guys!!
Right Lane Cruiser 06-18-2011, 09:33 AM Hi, Larry -- I don't know. I do know how to get into the 70+mpg range on feel alone so I guess I'll stick with that.
Mike -- right after you fill up there are fumes in the charcoal reclaimation canister which are fed in along with the normal fuel feed. You'll get silly high mileage for several miles after a fuel up because of this.
alvaro84 06-19-2011, 12:22 AM After 3 days of calm, warm weather I had a windy, cooler trip to work.
Temps were ~14C (57F), and I took the longest way to avoid the possibility of getting into mud.
And I have to be more careful inside the industrial park - I got carried away of the brisk pulses and leaning in sharp turns and finally I took a last pulse before stopping similar to those I take from the other gate (which is closed for the weekend), so despite the last incline I had to brake from almost 40km/h (to, like, 20-25) before turning into the parking lot. OK, I need some momentum because I roll FASed from there, but it was a bit too much. *sigh*
EVuser 06-19-2011, 09:35 AM Road Trip
Visitng in west central Minnesota this weekend. 375 miles on a Sonata rental and averaging around 41 mpg so far. Late night arrivial in MSP and light traffic in rural Minnesota makes for nice glides, on the other hand some soft long stretches of soft rutted gravel has been not so good.....
diamondlarry 06-19-2011, 11:11 AM Hi, Larry -- I don't know. I do know how to get into the 70+mpg range on feel alone so I guess I'll stick with that.

Today was an example of those silly high numbers.:D My daughter and I went to fill up so we will be able to make it to Cincinnati and I can get back home without having to fill up with any of that poison gas which I'm certain is all that is available down there.:p The temperature was 73F and the wind was SE@ 5-10 mph with gusts to 16 mph and humidity was 77%. I had 92.6 there with a brief stop at Martin's Supermarket over 8.3 miles. On the way back, the fill-up effect and the tailwind allowed for 143.3 over 8.2 miles.:woot: The tank numbers were nothing special but not too bad considering the monsoon/2-lane road highway trip Thursday. 404.6 miles and 4.265 gallons to bring it to the filler neck for 94.9 mpg.
PaleMelanesian 06-20-2011, 09:20 AM I burned about 1/4 tank in the Odyssey this weekend. We had a garage sale with some friends, at their house. Shuttling people and stuff back and forth (a trip for each) and absolutely scorching heat (100+) that required AC. That's about $15 of gas spent against our profits.
mikewithaprius 06-20-2011, 01:10 PM Last day of the Grind week, yesterday, I filled up for 69.2 mpg. I find that BP gas gives me mileage very close to the MFD on my second gen Prius (was 70.5 this time). Last three tanks before this one collectively read 68.8, actual was 68.0.
Average 70.0 mpg for June! :-)
Right Lane Cruiser 06-20-2011, 01:45 PM Nicely done, Mike!! :woot:
