Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day. A great big thank you to those who served, died doing so, and to their families.

In St. Pete visiting with family for a couple of weeks, may have a trip here and there. For those lucky enough, hurricane season starts tomorrow!

Oh, goody! As if tornado season wasn't enough?

No, that wasn't enough :( shiNIN broke her left radius at the Hyosung meeting, so most of my trips were 2-up since then, back from the South, and to the hospital, twice, then again, 1-up that time. She stays there tonight before the surgery. I try to be extra careful avoiding potholes now, I try give her as smooth rides as possible...

Anyway I did quite well these 2-up rides, the last tank became 3.012l/100km (78.1mpgUS) (1% corrected - no, Teresa hasn't stopped understating distance...), one of my best 2-up tanks, as I recall.

What I was doing before that wasn't a great success - I tried to enjoy milder bends on main roads which resulted in high speed, low acceleration pulses. It proved wrong in terms of FE. Actually I did better 2-up at lower speeds. Although I did 110-120km/h pulses before, sometimes quite a few of them, they didn't seem to hurt much when they were done aggressively.

And no new tank for Ciliegia, she has to be repaired :(

With no more school delivery and less school-related traffic, I got 84.0 / 10.6 mi this morning. :D

After the weekend's low-but-useful trips helping a friend move, the tank is at 75.8 / 64 miles.

Your not too far from me. I'm in ft Myers Near sanibel island.

Larry, So have I! :p

Mornign here still nice untill about 9am then the sun starts it eveilwork and heats up quickly.

got caught at one light coming into work but once on my work road i was alone and used it to my advantage.

83.4- 7.1 miles to work.

was able to get my fav spot to back into so i can roll out and bumb start. unfortunately got caught behind the limo gold cart that goes around giving the residents rides and lost my momentum. I did my best and just managed to break 90

90.0- 5.0 miles home.

tank sitting at 77 mpg @611 miles and 5 bars left on the fuel guage. I'm 100 miles over my best tank with the escort and still rolling. :D

Yesterday was interesting --

The trip in had a hurting to quartering 9 mph wind, but it was warm 70f and the traffic or lack of it stayed out of my way and off my bumper allowing me to post an all time best 65.4 mpg over the 30.1 miles.

With a strong quartering to helping west wind (23 mph) thought I had a chance at 70 on the trip home, but an aggressive start (wanted to see what that kind of wind on my tail would do) and traffic on me like flies on you know what knocked me down to 62.65 over 30.6 miles. Lesson: stay in the moment.

Back into the west wind this am (10 mph) over a modified route and a stop to fill up (614.4miles / 10.6 gallons = 57.96) resulted in 58.9 mpg over 32.4 miles. Liked the first part of the route change the back half not so much, now to find a way to connect it to the most efficient back third???

Way to go AATG!!!! :woot:

No problem, Scott. Looks like you are still doing great things with that HX.

Andrew, only on this board could your numbers be believed. :D

No driving for me today -- I'm working from home again. (Best way to save fuel!!)

still getting used to the new (bruised) fit. No SG installed yet, I have broken SG cable, the CAT5 locking tab brok off.

Going to to get the back passager quarter glass replaced today (from the tornado damage), then On monday will drop off to fix the scratch and drings from the storm. (48 hours off the lot :()

the FCD was showing 42.7 this morning when I got to work, that is with about 100 miles on it.

i am just still getting familiar with the car and how it feels. DWL, NICE-ON coasting and turnning off when I can.

Today I started Teresa for a mere 3km - it's a very rare occassion. That's the distance between the hospital and my workplace.
I hope I don't have to repeat this leg (=shiNIN can come home tomorrow).

Thanks - now she has some metal in her arm, but many live with some metal, so it doesn't worry me too much (though I was lucky enough to avoid it when my collarbone broke, it could heal without it). And I trust she's strong enough to cope with it, and heal fast.

The bike is in a club member's van now, soon to be carried to the workshop (probably next morning).

Well....... another wonderful day here in hot S.W Fla. :D

I realy though i was gonna break 90 today going in to work. I had 80 showing on teh fcd and 1 light to go and guess what? Yes It got me! :( still coasted into work with 85+ showing and that keep my string of trips over 80 going.

87.1- 7.0 miles to work.

It sprinkled abut an hour before i left and raod at work was drying, but main roads was wet and had some puddles that was easily avoided.

88.5- 5.0 miles home

Tank sitting at 77.3- 624.2 miles and 5 bars on the fuel guage.

past 3 days my trip average is 87.x :D

I been leaving my trip slips on my desk hoping my brother would see and comment about them but no luck yet :p

Oh I also went a whole calender month without refueling Sylvie. I filled up on april 19th.

Nice work, Mike!

I had wind and more stops than I like, but can't really complain about the results. It isn't up to the level of my single trip to work last week, but it continues to pull my tank average up and that's what counts! :)

58F, 10mph crosswind from the E, overcast:

113.9mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)

The tank is now up to 102.9mpg over 710.9mi with 15 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

I filled up this morning and had the worst tank mileage since I've been keeping track. I ended up at 35.2 mpg. I've only kept track the past 8 tanks or so, but this is the worst mileage I've had.

I'm chalking it up the the 95F+ temps. I rode with the AC every afternoon this week.

Let's kick things up a notch. Summer is here. 95+ degrees. Home for lunch.

83.6 / 10.5 home
97.1 / 10.7 back to work

That brings the tank up to 79.2 / 128 miles.

Traffic was not kind on the way home. They make me work for it around here!! :p

73F, 16-24mph cross/tailwind from the ESE, mostly sunny:

110.4mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)

The tank is now up to 103.1mpg over 726.3mi with 15 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

Day Total: 112.3mpg over 30.4mi

The Insight sure is loving this warmer weather!! :D

:D Well, I guess there could be a difference between Texas-warm and non-Hades like warm.:D:p

The temperature had warmed up to 76F by the time I left for the pizza and the wind was still E@ 5 mph or less. Unlike Sean, I had no traffic issues. In fact, I think it may be the first time I've never had any traffic from behind.
115.3 7.3(to pizza place)
123.7 7.2(back home)

Larry, think you can keep it up over 120mpg? If so, provided you filled all the way up with topping off you should be able to exceed 1600mi. I no longer have a route that would allow me to hit those numbers but you might be able to do it!

With my past experience with fillups in this car, I'm not 100% sure I got it clear full. I did stuff it clear to the top as I usually do and I think the FCD and hand calculations were within 2.5 mpg so, I think I got it pretty close to clear full. I was at 2 bars and it took 9.565 gallons to bring it up to the filler neck. As for keeping up the numbers, that would depend on whether or not my next commute is FE friendly. So far, I have been able to be very selective of routes and times of day to maximize FE. I'm assuming that 1600 miles would require the 13+ gallon capacity I've heard of in Insight's?

Right Lane Cruiser
06-02-2011, 09:50 PM
Yes -- take a look at my longest tank. I'd have crested 1600mi except I stopped driving the car when waiting for my daughter to be born and by the time I got it back on the road it was too cold to keep the numbers up.

1600/120 = 13.33g and I filled at 13.558g so targeting 120mpg for your tank average would give you some overhead.

diamondlarry
06-02-2011, 10:08 PM
Ok, sounds like I may have gotten it clear full then. I should note that I really thought it would have dropped to 1 bar before I got to the station as it had been at 2 for 40-50 miles. I am still trying to get my glide points figured out for the routes I travel since they aren't at all the same as they were in the Prius.

Ok, I’m a believer in the warm weather thing. Even today after making a fuel-gulping sprint from a dead stop to 65 mph in order to slide into traffic without getting thumped from behind after being forced to come to a dead stop by two red metering lights at the bottom a freeway entrance ramp, I still managed 61mpg on the way in.

That was my final attempt to connect the most efficient first half of my commute to the most efficient final third, there is no way around getting killed (FE and time) by the middling 17%. The possible routes either increase distance that can not be offset by anything other than a perfect trip or are littered with traffic controls that chew up the fuel saved in the <50 mpg segment.

The current route:

a. Is the shortest at 30.1 miles
b. Third fastest. The fastest route is was eliminated last week, it entails jumping on the interstate less than a mile from my house (used to do it daily in the SVT Contour: an easy 75 mph in 4th gear at the bottom of the ramp, look for the gap in traffic, flip it into 5th at 79 and click on the CC), in the HCH2 last week on the way to work (at much lower speeds)…I think I got the math right enough to call it a good estimate…10% of the gas to travel 1.7% of the distance.

c. Likely the best overall FE given real world traffic and weather constraints.

This week’s commute average and current tank are both hovering around 62 mpg.

56.6 / 2.6 - work to store, got the thing that was unavailable yesterday. She liked it. ;)
79.3 / 8.5 - store to home
84.5 / 10.6 - to work this morning

The tank is down a hair, to 79.0 / 150 miles. That first segment is killer - the main route through town at 5:00.

Right Lane Cruiser
06-03-2011, 08:46 AM

Die2self

pulling up in the work parking lot today the tank is just a hair over 1/2 and 44.0 MPG over 184.1.

I can tell they didn't fill the tank up very full. We shall see when I refill it. But 44.0 is good with no SG right now. Up from 43.4 this morning at the start of the commute. It is still hard to drive through the utter devistation and not feel for all the freinds and neighbors. Driving around has gotten better and can get to most places without much of a delay, but the path of destruction has changed the way Joplin looks and feels. We have hope and faith and are starting to rebuild already.

Jason, those numbers are more than respectable in your current condition. I find my mood affects mpg as much as any other road conditions.

Sean, Larry - I kid about the temps, but I'm glad you're finally getting the good stuff. Winter is long and cold enough here, I can't imagine dealing with what you have.

And I couldn't imagine having to deal with temps that would almost make A/C use a requirement. I'd love to see what my son could do in temps like yours as he has been getting some low to mid 80's mpg trips home from his work about 7 miles from home. /me rolls in now :p

Neighboy guy was sitting across the street and i felt a bit uncomfortable with my morning routine of pushing my car back up driveway so ic an roll back into the street. Reason i park at end is casue of the bird in my pine tree leaving bird "stuff" on the cars.

84.3- 7.1 miles to work. Should have been better but it's over 80 once again and i'll take that

94.0- 5.0 miles home. caught both my fav light one st beginning of trip home and the one at end. had a head wind and could feel and see it holding me back but catching the two lights green got me over 90.

tank up 2 ticks to 77.5- 636 miles. 5 bars on the guess guage.
