View Full Version : Week of May 16th - May 22nd, 2011 (Nat Avg $3.97)
Right Lane Cruiser 05-16-2011, 06:46 AM Welcome back to the grind, everyone!
I had ridiculous traffic for the time of day this morning. I'm not sure what that was about but between the congestion and low temperatures my numbers suffered.
36F, 3mph tailwind from the N, sunny:
103.8mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)
The tank is now back up to 101.9mpg over 619.2mi with 17 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
I had an excellent meeting with all_about_the_glide on Saturday -- he's got a beautiful, low mile example of the HCH and the pictures he posted don't do it justice. :) It's a very light blue (the photos led me to believe it was silver) -- very nice indeed!
LinuxGold 05-16-2011, 08:27 AM Good Morning Everyone!
To work was bad
62F 1N (tail) Heavy Fog low visibility:
58.5/19.2 mi
Tank is down to 62.5 mpg @ 40.3 miles
PaleMelanesian 05-16-2011, 08:39 AM Cooler this morning - 49F.
71.4 / 12.9 mi to school and work this morning.
That brings the tank down a tenth to 73.3 / 553 miles and getting close to 1/2.
EVuser 05-16-2011, 12:31 PM Refueled the HAH yesterday, 353 mi 9.7 gal =36.39 mpg. Pretty crappy compared to a Insight I but I was pleased. Mostly local shorter trips in I-80 traffic which exceeded the range of the Force (BEV) and were the Force is very much out of its' element. HAH still holding about 35 lifetime.
Last fill "top off" was mid April so this is pretty much a big mileage month for the car. I never let it get much below 1/2 as you never no when the "lights" might go out in CA.
On the financial side the price per gallon was down .05 cents from April. And .10 from the high's at which I didn't buy.
Temperature well below norms for May. Snow with chain controls in the Sierra yesterday, locally in the forties in the morning. The Force had just starting to maintain a warm battery temperature without using the thermal management system.:flag:
groar 05-16-2011, 02:00 PM Temperature well below norms for May. Snow with chain controls in the Sierra yesterday, locally in the forties in the morning. The Force had just starting to maintain a warm battery temperature without using the thermal management system.:flag:
Here temps are well above normal and rain well below, so nearly 30% of France is under water restrictions already while these are beginning only in June usually. A couple nuclear plant may not have enough water to cool down and may be switched off, which never happened...
Stayed at home today to save time for working... lots of work to finish this week so may go to office only for mandatory meetings. Next week I'm in Paris. At least I will save dyno juice...
Denis.
Die2self 05-16-2011, 07:14 PM for last weeks numbers
134.5 miles
5.1 gals
26.4 MPG
today
23.5 / 13.4 miles
27.2 / 12.8 miles
20.0 / 0.4 miles
25.2 / 26.6 miles
Tank is just over 1/2 tank (57%) ~ 25.6 MPG (244.2 miles on the ODO)
News that the Fit on order will be built on Jun 10th  (I want it now):eyebrow:
Oainac 05-16-2011, 07:16 PM Home to Trumpet Lessons over 5.9Miles (Had to stop at almost every light)
Trumpet Lessons to Home 45.2MPG over 5.9Miles (Had to stop at one light out of nine) *Best Trip Ever*
Right Lane Cruiser 05-16-2011, 07:55 PM Good numbers, Jason! Try not to get discouraged -- that Fit will be worth the wait!
Way to go, Oainac!!! :woot:
At the risk of sounding like a broken record... wind and traffic.
64F, 12-22mph headwind from the NE, sunny:
100.8mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)
The tank is steady at 101.9mpg over 634.7mi with 16 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 102.2mpg over 30.4mi
Right Lane Cruiser 05-17-2011, 07:16 AM I'm working from home again today because my wife is off on a business trip and I've got daycare drop-off duty. I'll have some numbers this evening from taking my daughter to and from gymnastics (or at least as much as 2.5yr olds can manage ;)) in the Elantra.
PaleMelanesian 05-17-2011, 08:26 AM Ah, but it sure is cute, Sean!
My numbers have been off the last few days. :(
49.8 / 1.7 - to dr appt after work. High speed and THE busy road in town.
72.8 / 10.3 - dr to home
69.8 / 12.9 - school and work this morning. Sooooo close.
That brings the tank down to 73.1 / 578 miles. The gauge is at 1/2 now.
gdsmit1 05-17-2011, 12:05 PM Just filled up yesterday morning on the way to work. This tank ended up coming in at 39.96 MPG. I'm thrilled with this mileage increase. If it wasn't for the rain this week, I'd expect to hit 40 next tank.
I screwed up with the fill up, though. I was going to do the calibration on the UG. I accidentally reset the averages, I should have gone into one of the menus and entered how much gas I put in. Oh well, I'm stuck with doing the calibration next fill up.
PaleMelanesian 05-17-2011, 12:22 PM My notes show that rain / water on the road drops gas mileage by about 12%. It depends on the amount of water, of course.
diamondlarry 05-17-2011, 04:01 PM So-so day today. Temps started out at 46F this morning and I saw a high of 55F. Winds were NE@ 10 -15 mph with gusts to 25 mph. I had 88.5 mpg over 33.2 miles for the day including 113.0 on the way home from my daughter's school...into the 45* cross/head wind.:) Should be getting my grid charger for the Insight in the next day or two as it is en route from FL.
lxmike 05-17-2011, 04:44 PM Keep it up Greg! you'll be over 40 soon.
I have battery charging going on in my garage now! :D took the junction board off so i can still drive my " non-hybrid" as my brother said it is now. :eyebrow:
Todays numbers
69.3- 7.2 mile to work. lil cool this morning and still soem wind. Doesn't take much to affec t this lightweight fuel sipper and make a dent in my numbers
82.4-5.0 mile home. warmer and wind died down this afternoon.
tank sitting at 423.5 miles. 11 bars on the fuel guage. I would be filling the escort easily by now. Still half a tank and 277 mile to go for 700! :D
brick 05-17-2011, 07:41 PM I filled over the weekend and wound up with my best tank in 2 years, thanks to outstanding weather and a bit of extra effort. That was 59.3mpg on the MFD, 57.2 in the real world. This tank isn't going as well. I'm still trying but it has been raining and about 10 degrees colder the entire time. I'm only seeing about 56.5mpg on the display. It would be really nice to see the sun and slightly better numbers!
On the bright side, I can't really complain about having to buy 7 gallons every 3 weeks. If this stupid tank were a little bigger I would be on monthly fills to cover commuting.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-17-2011, 08:30 PM Well, I made the best of my short drive to and from gymnastics. I was on my way to a 60+mpg when an F-150 decided to try to take me out in the middle of an intersection by making a right turn into me. :( A great thing to have happen with my daughter in the back seat.
I ended up yanking a hard right, then pulling a hard left hairpin (with my passenger front tire just catching the tip of the passenger dip in the corner of the concrete curb), then making a right hand turn to finish my progress across the intersection. What the heck? It wasn't like I did anything odd or didn't have the right of way... and I was driving south to north so it wasn't like the fellow had sun in his eyes.
Anyway, adrenaline aside we are fine and the car is in good shape.
66F, 7mph crosswind from the ENE, sunny:
58.7mpg for 3.6mi (Home to gymnastics)
55.7mpg for 4.0mi (Gymnastics to home)
The tank is now up to 48.7mpg over 370.2mi with 8.4g left and the guess gauge indicates 2 needle widths under the 1/2 mark.
Day Total: 57.1mpg over 7.7mi
Too bad the trip was so short...
all_about_the_glide 05-17-2011, 09:42 PM Your daughter is lucky to have you behind the wheel...been rear ended sitting in line at a stop light with my kids in the car. Saw it comming, panicked helplessness until I made sure they were all right. The car took it all.
FSUspectra 05-17-2011, 10:07 PM Your daughter is lucky to have you behind the wheel...been rear ended sitting in line at a stop light with my kids in the car. Saw it comming, panicked helplessness until I made sure they were all right. The car took it all.
Agreed 100%. Glad to hear you are all alright. :)
Right Lane Cruiser 05-17-2011, 11:04 PM Thanks, guys! I don't ever want to be in an accident... much less one with children involved. :(
all_about_the_glide, the incident occurred at that intersection with last light on the way back to my house along the route I had you drive (twice) through Anoka last Saturday.
diamondlarry 05-18-2011, 04:23 AM Your daughter is lucky to have you behind the wheel...been rear ended sitting in line at a stop light with my kids in the car. Saw it comming, panicked helplessness until I made sure they were all right. The car took it all.
Agreed 100%. Glad to hear you are all alright. :)
gdsmit1 05-18-2011, 08:36 AM Keep it up Greg! you'll be over 40 soon.
Thanks, I'm sure I'll get over 40 soon. I will say that as of right now, I'm not planning on trying out the more advanced techniques, like shutting off the ICE while moving. I do think I have more mileage to get out of the car, though. I'm still figuring out how to get the best mileage while going up hills. I'm finding that even though I don't see those 100+ MPG going down the hills while accelerating, I can still be 50-60 going down and finish going up the hill just under my average mileage. I figure this will give me higher averages overall.
I did have a remarkable event yesterday. The whole family went to the library. We typically take my wife's beast, but decided to take my car. This was the first time that my wife has ridden in my car since I got the UG. I gave her a brief run down of what she was seeing on the UG, she was really liked to see the high instant mpg going down hills. She seemed interested and when I asked if she wanted to get one for in her beast, she seemed interested. So, I may be getting another UG for in her car. I'll think about a SG, but since we would both be newbies, I think we'd get better use out of it if we are both using the same type of device.
PaleMelanesian 05-18-2011, 08:39 AM Glad things are ok, Sean!
I've taken to stopping a little farther back at red lights. I give myself enough space that I could turn and escape if needed. It also helps me get a slight running start on the green by closing the gap a bit. 2 mph more speed can help reduce anger behind me.
PaleMelanesian 05-18-2011, 08:44 AM 77.1 mpg / 10.7 mi - home last night
82.9 / 10.5 - this morning.
Child is home sick so I drove straight to work. Compare to yesterday's 69.8 to see the damage the school detour inflicts. Come on Summer!
The tank is back up to 73.3 and 599 miles.
gdsmit1 05-18-2011, 08:50 AM Oh, missed that post. Glad you were able to avoid that pick up and everyone is alright.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-18-2011, 09:12 AM Thanks, Larry, Andrew, and Greg!
Andrew, the light turned green when I was still a good 60' away from it. The F-150 was at the light when it turned but waited to make his left turn (yes, it was to my right... not a right turn) until I was already in the intersection. I'm really at a loss to understand why he would do such a thing.
No driving for me today as I'm still working from home -- my wife is back this afternoon. :)
PaleMelanesian 05-18-2011, 09:19 AM Sean, I know my suggestion had nothing to add to your "event". It was the other comment about being rear-ended at a light I was aiming for.
LinuxGold 05-18-2011, 09:25 AM Good Morning All,
Didn't drive HX today. Driving the gas drainer CR-V. =) Need to go to Honda dealer to reset the radio -- When we bought our CR-V, it didn't come with original manual that contains the CODE for anti-theft radio. Our CR-V battery died, left headlights on when we went to the mall, killed battery for more than 4 hours, thereby set the lock on Radio.... *GRUMBLES*
Right Lane Cruiser 05-18-2011, 09:55 AM Sean, I know my suggestion had nothing to add to your "event". It was the other comment about being rear-ended at a light I was aiming for.
That's what I get for bleary-eyed multi-tasking. :o Sorry about that!
LinuxGold 05-18-2011, 10:10 AM Sean,
Ouch, just now read your incident and glad that you are ok! Wish we could have camera on all sides of car, transmitting their violations to the police station on live feed with GPS coordinates!!
*5 deep breaths* -- ahh... I feel a lot better now.
T'care...
diamondlarry 05-18-2011, 03:49 PM Not too bad but, not too good either. I had 48F this morning and the high this afternoon was 64F. Wind was ESE@ 5 mph with gusts to 20 mph. I had 89.3 for the day over 33.1 miles. Tomorrow will be my last day at the temp job but I don't know how early I will get out so I may or may not have my usual rushed trip to my daughter's voice lessons. If I get out early (wife and I are driving separate in case), I have an idea for another way there. There will be some city-type driving but, the speeds will be lower and I'm counting on being able to time the lights so there won't be any more stops than going my usual route there; we'll see how it goes. Either way, there will only be one more trip to voice lessons after tomorrow as recital is May 26th.
lxmike 05-18-2011, 05:32 PM well....... I confess I've been a bit lazy with my driving and today i woke up and started driving Sylvie like she needs to be.
still col down here this morning. I almost wore long pants on my early morning biek ride but gritted it out. :D
69.3- 7.2 miles to work. cooler weather doesn't help with my short trips. also had a Police cruiser "eyeball" me so i got a lil nervous. :o
nice and warm leaving work and i even caught my fav light coming from work.
82.4- 5.0 miles home.
My cars showing lean burn numbers on the fcd anywhere from 95 to 125 for spurts but consistently 75+, but the sg x-guage doesn't show lean burn. Maybe cause i have no ima battery hooked up??
FSUspectra 05-18-2011, 06:03 PM Had an errands day today... started around 60 F and ended at 82 F
43.7 MPG / 3.3 mi home to Wendy's (babysitter dropoff)
45.2 MPG / 7.0 mi dropoff to home (realized I forgot something)
49.2 MPG / 5.8 mi home to Best Buy
41.1 MPG / 4.1 mi Best Buy to CRMC (EMS week lunch :D)
51.4 MPG / 7.3 mi CRMC to home
34.6 MPG / 1.9 mi home to Walgreens (mostly uphills)
46.6 MPG / 2.0 mi Walgreens to Wendy's
49.4 MPG / 3.3 mi Wendy's to home
tank at 39.0 MPG / 376.5 mi (this includes trip back from Kissimmee :() Fuel gauge just below 1/2 tank.
alvaro84 05-19-2011, 12:23 AM Yesterday I had to visit various offices in the nearby towns, it took ~80km. Weather was very nice, dry, calm, over 20C.
I think I catched the attention of a V-Strom rider, probably when I rolled next to him at a red light FASed not much after he passed me. Then he may expected me to accelerate very mildly but I surprised him again :D The he was following me for two villages, may be to figure out WTH I was doing :D
I can't rule out that I also surprised the policemen on the side of the road when I rolled past them in deadly silence, but it was a decline before a village so it took a while to lose the extra speed :D
My holiday is over, so it's time to go back to work.
This morning I finally got the low fuel light, it came off at 387km indicated, a tiny bit worse than last time, but light-to-light this is the better tank (the last one was contaminated by that clutchless extremely short city ride...). Average is 2.835l/100km for the last 459.3km (1% corrected) - 83 mpgUS.
I'll do something to check these distances with GPS, but it's still far from perfect :o
Right Lane Cruiser 05-19-2011, 06:56 AM Thanks, Scott!
Larry, any news of further prospects?
Mike, keep working at it!! How's the good/bad battery stick sorting coming?
Brandon, way to make the car sing over short distances!! :woot:
Alvaro, it is always fun to open some eyes isn't it? :D
I knew I had the makings of a good trip in when I topped 117mpg at 4.1mi out... and again at 7.4mi on the way to work. I couldn't hold it through traffic but I'm happy with the result. :)
50F (47F windchill), 6mph tail/crosswind from the NE, overcast:
113.9mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)
The tank is finally back up to 102.2mpg over 649.7mi with 16 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Just for fun, I'd have had to nail a 96.4mpg trip average to use the same fuel on the highway. Not impossible but less likely... and less relaxing. ;)
LinuxGold 05-19-2011, 07:08 AM Not reporting -- using CR-V again, transporting packages today.
gdsmit1 05-19-2011, 07:23 AM Morning, folks.
I filled up this morning and calibrated the UG. I guess this will just change the way the UG displays, not what I end up at fill ups. After all I take mileage and fuel to figure out my mileage. But I'll be doing the calibration each time for now on.
Alvaro, cool that you are opening eyes. I'm seriously thinking of getting a motorcycle. Part is I've always wanted one, the other is the high gas prices. I'm thinking of the V-Strom as a possibility.
alvaro84 05-19-2011, 07:47 AM Alvaro, cool that you are opening eyes. I'm seriously thinking of getting a motorcycle. Part is I've always wanted one, the other is the high gas prices. I'm thinking of the V-Strom as a possibility.
Real fun :Banane27:
V-Strom is a good reliable bike AFAIK, and it is not a fuel hog. A colleague has a DL650 and his average was 3.8l/100km (61.9mpgUS) on a trip when mine was 3.08 (76.4mpgUS) and he surely wasn't doing the coasting I was - so it definitely can be better.
It feels a bit too big for me, though I only just don't have to tip-toe with it on flat, and I feel it a small whale :D Teresa has a lower seat, she's slimmer and suits me better :)
PaleMelanesian 05-19-2011, 08:33 AM 76.4 home last night
74.7 this morning. 2 things kept me from another 80 like yesterday.
- back to school dropoff. Daughter is just fine again.
- traffic! There was 4-5 times the normal level of traffic. One leg where I usually see 1-2 cars, there were a dozen (and it's 2-lane no passing :() Every driveway I passed, there they were waiting to pull out behind me (us :p). I kept it at the limit for that segment.
Still, the tank is up a tick to 73.4 / 622 miles.
FSUspectra 05-19-2011, 09:04 AM How could there be so much more traffic Andrew... different time of year, did you leave earlier or later than usual? Guess everyone got to save some fuel this morning! :D
PaleMelanesian 05-19-2011, 09:29 AM I guess the stars aligned. On the first leg I've seen most of these drivers before, just not all at the same time. I departed at the same minute I did yesterday.
gdsmit1 05-19-2011, 09:59 AM Andrew, I guess they aligned properly for my area. All this week the traffic has been better than normal.
Alvaro, I like the styling of the dual purpose bikes. I also like that they sit up higher. For my commute, it is almost all highway. Sitting up higher should give a much better view of the road ahead. I haven't ridden one of those yet, and the seat height has me concerned.
I forgot to add that my mileage for this tank went down from 39.9 to 38.2. I'm going to blame the rain as the main culprit. We've had a lot of wet roads lately.
diamondlarry 05-19-2011, 12:15 PM Larry, any news of further prospects?
113.9mpg for 15.0mi (Home to work)
The tank is finally back up to 102.2mpg over 649.7mi with 16 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Nice work Sean! Unfortunately, no word yet on another job.:( That is a good news/bad news situation though. The bad news, of course, is the no-job prospect. The good news is, that I will b getting the Enginer kits (4KW x 2) installed as early as next Monday...unless a job comes along between no and then. I'm going to get my son to help me load the crates in the car over the weekend for the trip up to Chicago. They are supposed to get it done in 1 day. I hope so as I don't want to spend the night in a hotel.:p
So far today, the #'s have been only so-so at best. The temperature this morning was 55F and has only climbed to 58F so far...10F+ under average. I'm not liking the looks of this pattern as it looks very similar to the last couple of years with the below normal temps.:( Winds have been NW@ 5-10 mph. The winds coming home were primarily tail/side winds but the car had sat for ~4.5 hours and no EBH. Here's hoping for some improvement in #'s for the trip to my daughter's voice lessons.
88.8 9.2(to work)
84.8 11.0(back home)
Day Total: 86.6mpg over 20.2mi
diamondlarry 05-19-2011, 12:42 PM I forgot to mention that the grid charger for my Insight arrived today. It looks like the weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow so maybe I'll get it installed as it looks relatively simple to hook up.
PaleMelanesian 05-19-2011, 01:12 PM Home for lunch. Summer weather. :D
78.4 / 10.7 - work to home
91.7 / 10.5 - back to work
The tank is up to 73.7 / 644 miles and ~3/8 on the gauge.
LinuxGold 05-19-2011, 01:16 PM Andrew: nice!!
Die2self 05-19-2011, 01:23 PM Good numbers, Jason! Try not to get discouraged -- that Fit will be worth the wait!
Well it turns out that I sent an email to the dealer in St Loius that had the car we wanted but we were told by the dealer here that they didn't want to play ball. It seems like there was a communication break down between the 2. I have been pushing them to play nice and because if it I will be the owner of a 2011 honda fit 5sp as of tomorrow (if eveything goes as planned today to get the car down here) :Banane44: I will post picutures later.
So i will be trading the truck in for it and learning how to build up the MPG's in this new beast.:D I will need some help from the folk here that have a SG and a Honda Fit as to what are the best numbers to start with on the SG for the setup. I will look through the posts as well for more details to glean on TPS and LOD values.
So I will post the final numbers for the truck. I am not going to fill it up but I will use the gals used on SG and the miles on the ODO. I guess this will also mean that this was it for the challange as I can't add anymore tanks ;)
I am excited :Banane18:
Right Lane Cruiser 05-19-2011, 02:08 PM Gdsmit1, rain certainly has a large impact -- keep after it!
Andrew, still kicking it hard I see!! :woot:
Thanks, Larry; it was a fun trip! :D Good news on the kit install, too. Sounds like you are going to be tooling around with very little fuel usage indeed within the very near future, and that is very cool. You should compare notes with Jay.
Give me a call about the Insight grid charger this evening -- there are a couple of things you should probably pay attention to when doing this install.
Jason, WOW! :D :woot: This is going to be one heck of an upgrade for you and I think it will be a lot more enjoyable to drive, too! Congratulations, man!!
PaleMelanesian 05-19-2011, 02:17 PM Jason, I can advise you about the techniques. lnmcmahan (who sadly is missing these days) found it responds very much like my Civic.
Or ask Sean. Whatever he says about the Elantra will also be similar.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-19-2011, 04:40 PM I'll be happy to answer any questions about technique but I really wish Larry (lnmcmahan) was still around. I sent him an email a while back but never heard anything in return...
The traffic did its best to hold me back but I was in good form today. :) I didn't quite make the 110mpg mark on the trip but I did come close!
68F, 9mph cross/headwind from the ENE, overcast:
109.2mpg for 15.4mi (Work to home)
The tank is steady at 102.2mpg over 665.1mi with 16 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 111.6mpg over 30.4mi
Looks like I'll be working from home again tomorrow (doctor's appointment) and Monday (maintenance work at the house).
lxmike 05-19-2011, 06:33 PM Sean: Yeah I am working it best i can at the moment. as for the battery situation: the previos owner is helping me out so we're trying some thing but seeing much luck.
Todays numbers
72.6-7.2 miles to work. could have been more but saw one of the utility girl walking and stopped and gave her a ride. My good deed for today! :D
82.4- 5.0 miles home. caught all the lights and working on keep more steady on the pedal.
tank back up to 75.2- 448 miles and half way (10 bars) on fuel guage.
Tommorrow is a True friday for me. I Have the Weekend Off!!!!!:woot:
Going to a Car Show Staturday at a Muscle Car Museum. Will be a nice lil ride for Sylvie.
FSUspectra 05-19-2011, 07:12 PM Wife was home with kid today, no sitter trip required, but another free lunch was in order! ;)

47.3 MPG / 6.2 mi CRMC to FSU
50.6 MPG / 2.7 mi FSU to home
tank up to 39.3 MPG / 392.5 mi , gauge just below 1/2, approx 7/16
Die2self 05-19-2011, 09:40 PM thanks Sean and Andrew, I will be asking you lots of questions after I get behind the wheel for a little bit.
I have been busy and not able to get the numbers in until now. I just got done mowing the back yard, washing and waxing the truck for the trade (am I the only one that does that?)
Tuesdays numbers

I have removed the SG so there will be no more numbers from this truck :( from the same ratio of the Gals used compared to the the actual gals used from last tank (didn't change any of the setting at fill up so it should be reporting the same ratio) I have 12.04 Gals used and 323.6 miles on the ODO. Tank Average was 26.88 MPG :Banane17: What a way to go out.
FSUspectra 05-19-2011, 10:35 PM Impressive numbers for sure out of a 4x4 Dakota... the Fit will be a breeze! Can't wait to see what you'll pull from it! ;)
diamondlarry 05-20-2011, 06:23 AM Looks like I get to experience the benefits of a full pack in the Insight later on this morning. The bonus will be that temps will be in the mid to upper 60'sF and winds will be <5 mph. After 10 hours on the grid charger, I'm at 173.1 volts.
LinuxGold 05-20-2011, 07:54 AM Lightning struck, electricity powered off while sleeping, no power to vibrate the bed (I'm deaf BTW), left late, High P&G (55 mph Delta of 10), got to work ON time. *grumble* There goes my FE!
To work
56F 3W (cross/tail) overcast:
55.6/18.6 mi
Tank is down to 61.9 mpg
116 miles, 1.87 gallons used
563 miles, 9.1 gallons left.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-20-2011, 08:01 AM Lookin' good, Mike! Congrats on the day off, too -- sounds like you've got a nice weekend planned. :)
Jason, I'm really looking forward to pictures of both the car and your accomplishments on the SG! :D
Larry, that sounds about right for the temps. Remember, self discharge is pretty high at the top (10%) of the pack capacity so the charge will settle to something a good bit lower after it has been sitting unplugged for a while.
Hard luck, Scott!! :( Hopefully your house is not still without power?
LinuxGold 05-20-2011, 08:03 AM Sean,
It came on about 10 minutes after I woke up, collecting lunch for work.
PaleMelanesian 05-20-2011, 08:57 AM Jason - I also am eager to see what you do in the Fit. Still, it's always a bit sad to say goodbye. Even if it's an FSP.
Scott - doesn't it just figure that the power comes back on after you don't need it. :(
----------------------------------
mpg / miles
80.2 / 10.7 - home last night, 85 F
87.1 / 9.0 - to music practice
84.1 / 9.7 - home with detour to ATM
72.5 / 13.0 - this morning to school and work
:eyebrow: one of these is not like the others. Sigh. At least it'll be summer soon. :D
The tank is up :D to 74.0 mpg / 686 miles and getting down to 1/4.
diamondlarry 05-20-2011, 10:56 AM Very nice results. It's amazing how not being rushed can help your FE...that and having a full pack and not being able to rely on regen to make up for judgement miscalculations at known stops.;) Apparently, the pack was clear full as it had dropped a little to 172.8V (from a high of 173.1V) when I left at just a bit before 11:00 am my time which means just shy of 14 hours on the charger. After my return home, the pack was at 166.2V. This may not have dropped as much but, even after a year, I am still perfecting my take-offs in the Insight (read: very tall gearing:p) The temperature ranged from 61-65F and winds were NW@ up to 8 mph. I will be repeating this trip in about 4 hours when I go pick my daughter up from school. So far:
101.2 6.7(to daughter's school)
123.8 8.1(back home on my preferred route) Day Total so far: 112.4mpg over 14.8 miles.
PaleMelanesian 05-20-2011, 11:06 AM Re: tall gear ratios. Yes indeed.
Your first is about 11.1:1. Mine is 13.2:1. My 2nd gear is 7.2:1. Our tires are the same (approx) size.
But then you have only 62% as much engine as I do. :p

Yep. 67 hp is not much but, luckily mine only weighs #1880 though.:)
PaleMelanesian 05-20-2011, 11:19 AM ... 1880 / 67 = 28 lb / hp
my 2300 / 106 = 21.7 lb / hp
Even with the IMA motor's torque (which you're avoiding, right? ;)) you're down in a hole vs my civic.

Like the plague!:D Yeah, even with the IMA I'm only at 80 hp.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-20-2011, 12:00 PM Way to go, Larry!! :woot:
PaleMelanesian 05-20-2011, 12:12 PM ^ yeah, what he said. :D Sorry about the gear ratio detour. :o
visionseeming 05-20-2011, 12:14 PM ... 1880 / 67 = 28 lb / hp

The Geo Metro XFi has 1621 lb/49 hp = 33.1 lb/hp. :o The first gear is 3.42*3.79:1 = 12.9:1 though. Although, I do have tires that are ~3% taller than stock. Still, I can get it going at ~1000 RPM--at least once the engine is warm--If I want to, on flat ground. Maybe 1250 RPM to really get it smoothly with just a slight grumbling but no lugging. I'm still not that perfect with my clutching by any means though...I often do drop the RPM a lot as I take off or just take off roughly in general.
Just as I'm still not able to threshold brake properly even after investing significant time, tire wear, gasoline, and brake wear.:(
Oh also, I'm due for a fillup soon. ~450 miles and slightly below E. Maybe ~50-52 MPG this time? I suppose warmer temps have helped, as my driving is pretty much the same, maybe a bit less traffic(meaning I can drive slower) as I have woken up early more often this tank. We'll see.
Die2self 05-20-2011, 12:52 PM Jason - I also am eager to see what you do in the Fit. Still, it's always a bit sad to say goodbye. Even if it's an FSP.
Yes, yes it is. When we have had the truck for 14 years it becomes part of your life. even through it rained lastnight and something fierce this morning, I washed it and put some wax on the top of the cab and the hood. Giving it a nice rub down.
It has been a good truck for the past 9 years. There were a few at the start that it needed suspention parts replaced about once a year (all under warrent).
Removing the SG and the grill blocks were sad, knowing that this truck will propbily never see those MPG's again. :(
After the Wax I took some final pictures to keep as reminders.:Banane18:
Good bye old friend
diamondlarry 05-20-2011, 03:21 PM Well, lost a little even though it is up to 74F.:( The worst part is, I was on track to smash the earlier numbers but ran into the phenomena of Friday Stupid Driver Syndrome. Instances included people randomly stopping in my lane with oncoming traffic(x2) and several other cases. I think I'm done driving the Insight for today.
101.2 6.7(to daughter's school)
123.8 8.1(back home)
101.7 6.6(to daughter's school)
119.8 8.0(back home)
Day Total: 111.7mpg over 29.4mi
lxmike 05-20-2011, 04:43 PM Wow Larry! Great Numbers.
was still lil cool today but i did what i could.
74.7- 7.2 mile to work. still a lil hesitant to fas with just the 12v battery. My bumb starts aren't the best. :o
95.6- 5.3 miles home. :D tried a diff way leaving work and it shows here! had no traffic behind me and could keep my speed down more than usual and that also helped.
Tank steady at 75.2- 460 miles.
diamondlarry 05-20-2011, 06:15 PM Since I'm not the primary driver of the Prius any more, I sort of forgot to write down numbers for the weekly grocery run.:o From past experience, I do remember that the distance was just a touch above 13 miles each way and I saw the SGII reading just under 79 mpg for both segments. I wasn't even taking my techniques to extreme levels either.:)
Right Lane Cruiser 05-20-2011, 06:23 PM Nice work indeed, Mike!! :flag:
Larry, 79mpg on that trip will be a distant memory once you get the 8KWhr pack installed. :D
diamondlarry 05-20-2011, 06:30 PM Sean, perhaps 10x? Or more?;)
diamondlarry 05-20-2011, 06:48 PM Update: I just got an email from the potential installers. They are suggesting a Thursday or a Friday and, due to an odd set of upcoming events, I can't get up there either of those weekdays until June 9 or 10; hoping for Mon-Wed. Hmm, if I go on the 10th, maybe I could go to Giordano's for my birthday?:p
basjoos 05-20-2011, 08:39 PM 64 mpg on the 52 miles going to work at 5AM at 55 to 60 mph. 88 mpg on the 52 miles at 6PM coming home at 60 to 66 mph, but with speeds up to 75mph in a FAS on some of the downhills. When I leave Asheville heading south on I-26 cruising along at the PSL to 5 over, the trip average mpg will be up to 82 mpg by the time I reach the SC state line and start heading down the mountain.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-20-2011, 09:54 PM Hey, Eric -- that's a beautiful drive! I miss it down there... Asheville was one of my favorite weekend destinations from Spartanburg.
lxmike 05-21-2011, 10:30 AM Not a bad ride today to the car show. Car Show wasn't as big as i hoped but still saw some nice cars. There was a guy there with a porsche he converted to all electric. 150 miles range and charges overnight (8 hours) I didn't have my notebook or camera so thats all i remember him saying.
82.2 - 32 miles there. nice long streach of road and had nice view of the lights and coudl time them real good. only got caught at 1 that messed me up.
81.3- 31.7 miles home. car warmed up so thougth i coudl do betetr but i had the headwind and could feel it pushing against me :( at least i kept it over 80.
Tank now up to 75.9 and broke 500 miles now.
diamondlarry 05-21-2011, 01:27 PM Went for a little cruise today in the Insight. I had 111.6 mpg over 37.4 miles. The last 6 miles were at 137.8 mpg. The temperature was 71F and winds were SE@ 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 mph. The pack voltage was at 174.0V when I started and was at 167V at the end. I have decided to take the Battery Tender+ off the scooter as it is having some. I'm putting it on the Insight for now.
diamondlarry 05-22-2011, 10:49 AM More practice today.:) Temperature was 72F and wind was S@ 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 mph. Due to terrain not really being flat, I relied mostly on DWL in the 30-40 mph range with the target being closer to 35 mph. I would then FAS up to known stops. I think there were 2 times when I encountered a downhill that was big enough to FAS down between stops. What I'm starting to notice with this car is that known stop signs are not necessarily bad and, that long stretches with no stops aren't necessarily best either. In fact, some of my better numbers in recent days (126.6, 137.8, 119.8, etc.) have been on routes with stops at an average of 1 mile apart with top speeds of 40 mph (for terrain) but sticking to 30-37 mph as a target. FAS's are generally .5+ miles long.
Today's #'s: 115.6 mpg over 16.3 miles.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-22-2011, 12:29 PM Now she's singing, Larry! Stops aren't a problem as long as you are able to drift up to stops with no brakes. My routes typically don't allow that because of other traffic. When it does allow it the numbers get stupid big really fast. :D
diamondlarry 05-22-2011, 12:48 PM They sure do! I was at 130+ at just over 5 miles out this morning. That was due to being able to glide about .75 miles from about 33 mph to a stop sign. I figure that with the tank being basically decimated by the rushed schedule of the past 3 weeks I can afford to experiment freely without doing any damage to the FE #'s; in fact, they can really only go up.:p I am down to 6 bars but am only to about 700 miles.:( I noticed today that the ground strap from the engine to the body has been broken for some time now and was basically only touching. For now, I have temporarily "fixed" it by clamping it together with a jumper cable.
It seems the pack is stabilizing at around a reading of 174.3 then settling back to just over 173.6 or so. Any chance there is an X-Gauge code for reading pack voltage?
Right Lane Cruiser 05-22-2011, 12:59 PM Unfortunately, no. I keep hoping someone will figure that one out so I don't have to think about hacking into the BCM to get that information (as done by Peter Perkins in the UK).
You'll want to get that ground strap repaired.

Bummer!:( Yeah, I plan on going tomorrow to see if I can find one. Hopefully, I can find one in Nappanee which will basically be the same route as the high-FE trip home from my daughter's school.;):D
diamondlarry 05-22-2011, 01:13 PM Update: Found one(Universal 15" Ground Strap) at Autozone for $6; in Nappanee. :)

For gen2? Do you have Adrian Black's x-gauge list? Here's the link I use to the

Gen3's there, too, by the way for others who read this.

43.0MPG / 15.1mi round trip
Scorcher today! Started out around 72, got home to a ridiculous 99!
48.3MPG / 43.6mi home -> church
43.3MPG / 43.7mi church -> home
Tank average 40.3 MPG / 503.2 mi fuel gauge just below 1/4

BillLin, they are talking about a gen. 1 Insight, not Prius ;)
EVuser 05-22-2011, 03:13 PM Hey, Eric -- that's a beautiful drive! I miss it down there... Asheville was one of my favorite weekend destinations from Spartanburg.
Made a lot of trips between Ashville and Charlotte, the Queen City. I think the best time was about 17 minutes which was way off of the unofficial record. Used a lot of fuel but usually had all the seats full. Nice area.
Anyhow back to my cars. Solectria Force in particular.
Staying close to home this week all in town. 49.1 miles so far, 6 trips. The shortest 0.7 miles and the longest around 24. Weather very nice battery temps and air both in the 70's.
Increased the psi from the required 44 to a bit firmer 50 about a week ago and as always I can immediately tell the difference in the glide range. So I worked a little harder at efficiency than I usually do to see how it is doing.
The numbers Pack to wheel for the week. Converter used is from ecomodder
L/ 100 km 1.17
km/l 85.43
mpg (US) 200.94
mpg (Imp) 241.32
km/gal (US) 323.39
gallon (US)/ 100 mi 0.5
wh/KM 103.77
wh/mi 168.25
No a/c used, and no heater needed, but I did treat myself to the XM radio.;) Can do a bit better if the trips are a bit longer. And a lot worse if speeds above 40 are needed.
IMO you gas burning hypermiling Insight drivers are doing a awfully good job! :flag:
Mike
EVuser 05-22-2011, 03:29 PM My sweet wife just came back with the Solectria. She went 1.7 miles and obviously wasn't in a hypermiling mode. 147 mpg/e:flag:

Thanks for the link Bill. I'm going to bookmark that for later use for my Prius. I was actually referring to my 2000 Insight MT though. It seems I need to update my vehicle list.:o

diamondlarry 05-22-2011, 06:05 PM Yeah, that would be a bad day for the Prius to get that low.:(
Well, I think I'm done for the day. The temperature was 78F on the way to Autozone for the new cable. Wind was SW@ 10-20 mph with gusts to 30+ mph. 6 of the trip miles were south going out and north coming back. 2 miles at the end of the first leg were east and the first 2 miles coming home were west.
102.6 8.3(to Autozone)
126.9 8.3(back home)
Day Total: 114.5mpg over 32.9mi
