Turn a power split into a power combiner, stuff it into an Insight, hack the Prius Inverter to control the motors, and you have one cool buggy.
I have started a blog to document the progress that I make on this long term project.

Ok Brick will do, but the putting back together is a lot of fun as well.

I got two synergy drive units yesterday. I will open up one of them, to weld the planet assembly and turn it into an electric powerpack.
The drive weighs about 230lbs, and is only 16" wide. Plenty of room in the engine bay which has the motor mounts at about 36" wide.
The Insight engine with tranny has got to be close to 500lbs, and fills most of the bay, so There will be lots of room under the hood for batteries and stuff.
Now I just need to find the time to get to the project.
Too many projects, not enough time.

What kind of batteries are you considering for this project? A123's? Kokam's? Regular-old 18650's?

Per specs:

Insight I_C_E 124 lbs.
5sp tranny 91lbs.
Couldn't find the CVT weight.

I think that the CVT with motor on my stand weighs much more than that. I suspect that those numbers do not include the AC compressor, radiator, starter. I carefully lifted each leg of the stand just pff the ground with a scale and hydraulic jack, that had been tare'd out, and the scale pegged at 300lbs on each of the front two legs.
This is a long term project, may not finish it this year? The batteries will be the last component I will worry about, since I need to first mount the synergy drive assembly, then figure out how to drive the two 3 phase motors.
Once that is working, I will see what the finances look like and make a battery selection based on that.

I just want the information on line so someone else may give it a try.
There must be more hybrid hackers out there?;)
