View Full Version : Second tank after changing driving habits
gdsmit1 05-03-2011, 06:58 AM I filled up for the 2nd time after changing my driving habits. I'm happy to say that my improvements continue. I'm still nowhere near some of you guys, and haven't broken the 40 mpg mark yet, but I'm up to 38.6 on this past tank, that's up from 37.1 last tank.
I haven't changed any driving habits since last time, but think that I'm getting the hang of what I'm doing. I drive the same route, so I know where I can shift into neutral for a decent distance. I also notice another spot in the commute where the PSL drops from 65 to 55. I always thought that the entire section of I-95 that I ride was 65 except for work zones. There's another long section of 55.
I also think that I'm getting better at keeping the load on the engine more steady. I would think this would improve with practice and it seems like it is.
As a side note, I ordered an ultragauge.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-03-2011, 07:14 AM Congratulations!!! Keep working at it and as you become more familiar with techniques you'll learn more about your vehicle and your routes.
gdsmit1 05-03-2011, 09:30 AM Thanks. Now to figure out which gauges to put on the screens of the UG. Any suggestions? I'm reading through the manual right now.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-03-2011, 09:58 AM I'd start with instantaneous and trip FE, trip distance, TPS (throttle position), and LOD (engine load).
FSUspectra 05-03-2011, 01:12 PM On my first screen, going A-G, I have instant MPG, trip MPG, %LOD, coolant temp, trip distance, and DTE... this will likely change though, adding throttle position where DTE is.
ateebtk 05-07-2011, 01:56 AM congrats on ultraguage purchase.. I like the throttle position guage b/c it helps me train my foot to not make erratic changes.position ... i've had the UG for 2-3 days now and have some questions?..
Engine load?
Whats a good number to keep this @ ?
What things to reset ?
Ill be filling up soon... when i bought it i already had fuel in car so made up some random # for gas tank capacity... how to tell UG i have filled up ?
thanks
gdsmit1 05-07-2011, 07:47 AM Thanks. I haven't received it yet, but should probably come today. I hate the USPS tracking service, it rarely has up to date info.
I've read that hitting the up arrow tells it you have filled up, but don't know if you have to be in a certain menu or what.

Best engine load varies with the engine and transmission. I use average general data to track tank mpg/distance, so I reset those when I refuel. I use trip data to monitor trip pogress, so I reset those when I complete or start a trip. On long trips, I'll reset trip data after ~75 miles to freshen acuity.
ateebtk 05-08-2011, 02:27 PM is that instant mpg or the trips avg mpg ?... 91.5 ! wow impressive
gdsmit1 05-09-2011, 09:50 AM I'd guess that it is average since he gave it with a distance.
With my new Ultragauge, I saw 211.7 in the instant MPG this morning. I know that really isn't anything, but it is cool to see a mileage that high.
FSUspectra 05-09-2011, 11:04 AM When you're at speed coasting in neutral, you will see instant MPG's that high... that's how we can see coasting makes a HUGE difference in mileage. If more people saw numbers like that while driving, I feel more people would change their driving habits. Seeing the numbers made a huge difference for me.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-09-2011, 01:45 PM That was an average over 9.8mi. You can see Darrell's original post about it below:
