Yee-hah - 27.7 mpg.
:bananajump:
My best since I started here in Feb.
My goal now for this car is 30.
Admittedly this was a "short" tank. Only 115 mi. since the last fillup. But I have a good reason.
I plead the need for information - the car is tool old for a ScanGauge so the only way I can get fairly rapid feedback re. FE is to top it off when I've completed some mileage that will be informative.
I added a tach to the car this past weekend and have been doing my best to learn how to use it to optimize FE. Torque converters behave differently from standard transmissions, I've discovered.
Right now I'm keeping the tach around 2100-2200 rpm and letting the speed "float" to its own level. Usually anywhere between 50-60 mph depending on grade and engine load. That is, when I'm not coasting NICE-on or accelerating on a downgrade. If this doesn't completely make sense to you, understand that there's some slippage in the tranny. As you start to accelerate the engine rpms go up but the wheels don't immediately go proportionally faster. This car seems to run best around 2100-2200 rpm (steady-state), at least from what I can tell at this early stage. No torque converter lockup in this car (which would eliminate the slippage); Volvo implemented that several years after they made my car.
I also removed one pair of snows from the car this morning so that improved RR noticeably. I plan to change off the other pair today, or tomorrow at the latest.
30 mpg seems like a good stretch considering I started around 24 mpg in Feb. but I think can reach that in warmer weather.
