View Full Version : I think I've plataued

I've noticed that I can't seem to get my averages above 66 mpg, which I later found out was 0x42 in hex which fits my profile nicely. Also know as the FE of the beast (ie 66.6 MPG)

The chart points (brown line) are the MPG ratings for the last 7 trips (usually comes out to 100mi). Kind of a FE moving average. The black line is a moving average of 25 points. This take most of the wild fluctuations out that happen if I mis light or two while maintaining basic trends (in my opinion).

Other drivers are factored out and excluded from the data gather.

So until I get EV and EBH installed, I think I call this my plateau. For now it's beastly FE for me (or as I prefer 0x42).

I love the hitchhiker's reference, made me laugh.

Sorry to hear that you can't go any higher as is, but if you have to be stuck at any FE, that is certainly a great one to be at!

Oh heck Dan, your Prius is not quite broken in. You'll do better.

Hi Dan:

___Oh boy, your just getting to the good stuff :D Wayne is dead on. A 2007 is just starting to wake up after a few thousand miles. Wait until she has 30K + on her and transitions will become like a knife through warm butter. Now is simply when the radar becomes razor sharp as you begin look and consider alternates or other places along your current route where a lengthier glide can be put into practice. Every time I think I have plateaued, I find yet another little tweak and it gives me another .25 - .5 mpg per segment. In fact, I found yet another just 3 weeks ago and I have been traveled the same Interstate for over 6 years now!

___Your big worry is the Texas heat that you are about to enter into and that one may truly be your downfall given almost mandatory use of A/C starting later this month/next month :(

___Good Luck

I've modified my route primarily to give me as much space on 4 lane roads. People can pass and often do. I stick to the highways with the kids in the car so they aren't so late for school :o . If I woke up earlier I could cut the 3.6 highway leg to 1.8, and eliminate it all together on the way back, though it might be better to stay on for a mile, or I'll have to do the whole mile in EV (long 4 way stop always backed up).

I do have a few major milestones ahead that should give me a bump.

1) EBH (hopefully at HybridFest). If I can get to S4 quicker I'll be in much better shape. As is, I force acceleration to 65 kph on certain segments so I can trigger auto-stop.

2) EV mod (hopefully at HybridFest). There is a neighborhood I go through that has a stop sign at every block. I usually get there in S3 so I can't force auto-stop. Point is for about 4 blocks, I'm idling  . Once I get the EV mod I can override.

3) Oil change at 5k. Gonna be my first chance to move to Mobile 1.

4) Considering a solar panel in my trunk bay to charge a small battery. Hook it to some smarts and a timer, and I can fire up the EBH about 10 minutes before I leave from work. May give me an extra 2-3 degC on my route home. Don't know if I could ever get enough Wh from a trunk bed solar array to be worth it though. Also since the EBH is basically an closed short, don't know how much power I would have to loose in protecting the battery.

But suffice to say, that once all the mods (route + prius) come in, I might be able to hold that 70 figure that mparrish and I have been chasing.

What he said. I went through this with the Accord last year. It didn't have break-in issues since it already had 40k on the clock, but there were a few times when I thought I had pretty much peaked from driving tactics alone. That was when I really got into tweaking my routes and found more ways to reduce A to B fuel consumption, and usually improve the FE numbers. I also found a couple of times that I was holding back on technique. After a gentle nudge or two from Wayne and others I found the gaps and put them to use. The most hypermiling fun I've had to date was figuring how to get that car into a smooth HS P&G cycle on these New England hills at highway speed. It was a big hump to get over and required the right low-traffic conditions to pull off comfortably, but man was that fun. :D

Dan, wait until you get a scangauge. You might have some moments like me while testing parts of your route, where you say "it felt like X was the way to go, but scangauge says Y.......who woulda thunk."

Just wanted to mention my own 2004 HCH seemed to break in at around 60,000 miles.

At least I noticed a significant MPG increase about that number.
