In an Automatic Tranmission, is there any real way to tell if you are in the highest gear?? i dont know much about cars. I got a scanguage. Just got it and tryinjg to see how it works. SO far my MPG is at least 40 mpg in a my echo. But i know going in the highest gear is best. SO any ideas? How to tell?

Count the shifts from a stop. 4-speed auto = 3 shifts into top gear, but.... there's another sort of shift when the torque converter locks in top gear. To tell if it's locked or not, push harder on the gas. Does the rpm go up, or stay the same? If it goes up, there's some slip going on, and it's not locked. If the rpm stays the same then it's locked.
In many cases, lockup happens somewhere in the 40-50 mph range.

Read rpm and speed to tell which gear you are in. TC lock-up makes this reading as accurate as a manual.

Any progress here? Automatic transmissions can be quite frustrating for those with efficiency in mind.

Well...auto transmissions will generally shift to the highest gear as needed. Not much you can do to control it either way.

Thats for sure!
Major, does your car have a tachometer? if not then the Scanguage has one you can use. See what your rpm are at when your getting up to speed.
