View Full Version : Scan gauge display scrambles then resets mileage data
jonjonbear 11-09-2010, 12:09 PM Hello all,
I purchased a SCII for my 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe. Upon installing and using it initially it seemed to work fine. then we took it on a long trip and at a point I looked up at it and the M and the P in MPG were scrambled and the data was reset. It only did it this one time on the trip. Then back to home, and emailed them and they sent me an exchange..Super!
Well went on a trip again, and the new one does the same thing! It seems to require driving for a few hours. It was a fairly cool day and it's not mounted in the sun. The MPG data seems to be the only thing lost.
I emailed the company again twice with no response. Any ideas? Odd that two do the same thing. Can't imagine it being my car?
Thanks so much for any pointers,
John
WD-40 11-09-2010, 12:50 PM Check your connection on the cable, I had similar issues on my yaris, turned out to be a loose connection do to location of OBDII plugin
PaleMelanesian 11-09-2010, 01:24 PM It might be the vehicle. Some vehicles (maybe Hyundai, but I can't remember) have a few nonstandard pins in the plug. The Scangauge people might be able to help with that.
Hi John:
One of those older Hyundai’s again...
Contact Linear Logic and they will send you out a new cable with a resistor added to a particular pin that should remove this problem. Hyundai back in its day was not to keen on following protocols that were standardized years before.
Andrew, I just saw I overrode your post. Sorry about that.
Good Luck
Wayne
PaleMelanesian 11-09-2010, 01:45 PM No problem, wayne. I was just guessing. It's good to have another answer backing it up.
jonjonbear 11-09-2010, 02:53 PM Wow thanks for the fast replies. I will give em a ring and see what they tell me.
Have a good one,
John
SentraSE-R 11-09-2010, 04:41 PM I concur. My first SGII fried itself when I plugged it into my wife's Hyundai. Linear Logic shipped a replacement unit to me, and that one has been working fine.
FSUspectra 01-29-2011, 09:07 PM I have been having the same problem with my 05 Spectra...which would have the same computer as the Hyundai.
I guess I'll be giving Linear Logic a call! Did they just send a new cord? Do I pay for it? Exchange for old one?
SentraSE-R 01-30-2011, 08:57 AM I just mailed them my SG, with cable, in its original box, and they mailed me back the same unit, repaired. It still had my velcro attached to it.
I think we're talking about two different problems here. My SG burned out a component, and didn't work at all. The OP is talking about a glitch that displays some characters in the rpm and mpg displays scrambled. I've experienced that before, and still do. When those displays get scrambled, recycling through the displays doesn't fix them. I found just shutting off the car for two minutes causes a momentary SG reboot, and the SG is fine after that. You don't have to send your SG back for that. It's just a boot-up glitch.
FSUspectra 01-30-2011, 11:13 AM My problem is the same that the OP is having. The really annoying thing is that after the scrambling of the display, all the records in memory (tank info especially) resets.
Although I bought my SG in 2008. I guess my phone call tomorrow will determine my course of action. I think Wayne and Andrews's solution may be what I need. We'll see I guess...
FSUspectra 01-31-2011, 04:56 PM Spoke with LL today and they said they hadn't heard of that issue before... but they decided to send me the Non-CAN cable that they sent to the OP to see if this problem ever comes up again... hopefully that will be the end of this issue for good!
FSUspectra 02-08-2011, 06:30 PM Received new cord a few days ago...but didn't want to put it in until my next fillup. Well, today, the display scrambled again halfway through my tank . So I put the new one in. It looks exactly the same as the old one, same typo, same pin setup. So hopefully that new resistor is inside it? This seems to always happen when I start the car or bump start it from a FAS. If it happens again, I'll try and remember to take a picture of the display if I can.
Nevyn 02-15-2011, 11:49 AM I've found that mine will scramble if I change the update speed while the unit is live (car running). I've also found that HyunKia's are SLOOOOOW to update - and these older ones (I have an 04) show up as "KWP2000" protocol - not ISO, or CAN, or PWM. They're cranky, and if you FAS for too short a time they won't come back on.
I don't have the special cable. I just know that I don't turn my SG back on until the display goes out, that seems to be a good time delay. Otherwise, it'll read 0.0 MPG even when in FAS. If I wait, it'll read 99999MPG even though it's not adding it to the average.
I only FAS at lights (automatic).
FSUspectra 03-28-2011, 08:23 AM It did it again yesterday :( but I did manage to snap a picture. I guess I'll be giving Linear Logic another call to see if anything can be done, or if I'll have to live with it until I get another vehicle...
Upper left is MPG, lower left is GPH. Sorry for crappy picture qualty, snapped with older cell phone.

Nevyn 03-28-2011, 09:10 AM Yep, mine did that too. 2 questions:
What is your update speed set as?
Do you FAS at all?
FSUspectra 03-28-2011, 09:45 AM My update speed is set to fast, and I do FAS. This usually happens when I bump-start, but has happened on a few key-starts as well. In other words, I've found it doesn't necessarily happen because of a FAS. Sometimes it just does it. It once did it starting my car one morning, after it sat all night...:confused::confused:
