After my drive this morning, I've come to the conclusion that the drive test in no way qualifies someone to safely drive on the roads...
First, it was foggy and there were some isolated showers and overall drizzle this morning. Since I woke up late(as I've been doing for the past month:(), there was lots of traffic.
On the freeway, I'm trying to leave a good distance ahead of me, especially after that close call I had, and especially since the roads are wet, which further increases my stopping distance. Both lanes were filled with cars, and I had about 50-100 feet gap in front of me, the cars in front were near a dead stop, and I was doing maybe 10 MPH, in 2nd gear. Then, I notice a fairly large truck(but not an 18 wheeler) coming near me. He is slowing down, but eventually I can't see his wheels anymore, and I was forced to shift to first, and FLOOR it. At the same time, I turned on my hazards. Within a short time, since the cars in front of me are stopped after all, I had to brake. Hoping this maneuver would have gotten some sense into the truck driver, I look behind me to see him again come withing 3-4 feet of me. My hazards are still on, I'm braking, and eventually come to a stop. I'm maybe 10 feet behind the cars in front. Of course, this was waaay too damn far for the truck driver, and he decided it would be very enjoyable to pass in the shoulder! I then swerved near the other lane, but since there were cars there I couldn't move much. He completed the pass without hurting me or other cars luckily.
Still, I would want his drivers license burned, and he should be forced to using that vehicle, be tested on a private road that is wet , driving at 20 mph, when suddenly the (maybe remote controlled) car in front of him comes to a dead stop. Then maybe he or she would gain some consideration for other drivers in front of him.:(
In general, I think the drive test should force people though some "controlled" accident situations, to really drive into their minds the risks that are involved in driving. In addition, it should test the drivers ability to make emergency stops, in a controlled manner.
