View Full Version : How to decrease congestion and cut fuel usage
One town in England turned off their traffic lights at one junction and cut travel time dramatically.
One woman states a trip that use to take twenty minutes now takes five with out the traffic lights.

Right Lane Cruiser 10-17-2010, 05:34 PM I'd love to see this implemented in several places around here!
As a side note, did you notice the several shots of the mighty Civic iCDTi that clip? :D

Last time the traffic lights were stopped and the lights just blinked red here in my neck of the woods(which is the equal of a stop sign), most people didnt even know what to do.

Strange. Out east (ex: DC), it is common to switch the traffic lights to blinking yellow (yield) after 10 or 11PM. Much quicker and more sensible during low traffic periods.

I could think of a few places here where that would be nice. Every once in a while when we do go to the blinking yellow lights, there are still a few people who will automatically stop.

Lots of place here have lights that blink yellow/red at night - mostly low traffic lights.
SentraSE-R 10-22-2010, 04:25 PM This discussion reminds me of my month in Puerto Rico. When you drive in San Juan, you don't stop at red lights after midnight (to prevent carjackings). Everyone slows at light-controlled intersections, but coming to a complete stop is a no-no.

There's places in Chicago I wouldn't stop for a red light at noon, regardless of local custom. Fortunately I don't have to go through those areas much, but it does happen.
roadrunner 10-22-2010, 06:53 PM In my area (one hour north of Philadelphia) I believe we could save 10% to 20% in fuel if the traffic lights were programmed perfect. They are way off, most at off hours, they should be blinking yellow and blinking red.
JusBringIt 10-22-2010, 07:41 PM I've always said that shutting off the traffic lights or do flashing red/flashing yellow would work much better. I love the modern roundabouts where they are implemented. They save a ton of time too.
phlack 10-27-2010, 02:47 PM I can think of several places near me that could use blinking lights during "off hours". Rush hour, yes, but outside of that, some could definitely blink.
We have a roundabout near us, but it's small and implemented poorly (though they do have a separate path for one of the high volume routes which was smart). Luckily I rarely go that way.
