Toyota's top European seller Yaris hits U.S. showrooms as Japanese automakers prepare to flood the market here with new subcompact offerings.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - This could be the year that Japanese automakers rediscover their roots in the U.S. market.

And that could mean more trouble ahead for U.S. automakers such as General Motors.

Toyota starts to roll out its Yaris subcompact car to dealerships this spring. It will be closely followed by the Honda Fit and Nissan Versa, as all three of the big Japanese automakers begin their first major push in years to sell extra-small, very fuel efficient cars in the United States. The cars generally have base prices between $12,000 and $13,000.

The low-priced segment was where the Japanese made inroads into the U.S. market after the oil shocks of the 1970s and 80s. But as gas prices stabilized, the Japanese moved away from the segment, as did American car buyers and automakers, to concentrate on larger, more profitable light trucks such as SUV's.

Even the compact cars offered by the Japanese grew in size and price; the Toyota Corolla can now have a list price of $19,000 if upper-end options are included.

The segment has been left mainly to the Koreans and to GM's Chevrolet, which used its own Korean-built vehicle, the Aveo, to become a leader in the low-priced part of the subcompact market over the last two years.

But GM has put relatively little marketing push behind the Aveo, even as U.S. sales of the car grew 20 percent last year to just over 68,000.

The low-priced segment overall grew between 6 and 10 percent last year, to about 200,000 U.S. sales, depending on how it's counted, and Toyota sees the segment growing by another third this year due to all the new entries.

"We got our start in the U.S. with small cars," said Ed LaRocque, national marketing and planning manager for Toyota USA.

Higher gasoline prices are an important, but only partial, factor driving the interest in smaller cars, he said.

"Buyers are being more practical with what might be their second or third car," he said.

Even more conservative growth estimates put expected U.S. sales growth in the segment at about 25 percent this year. But even that might not be enough to absorb all the new entries.

"I don't think the segment is growing fast enough for everyone to win," said Mark McCready, director of market analysis for on-line auto retailer CarsDirect. "The Koreans are going to take the biggest hit. But I think only two of the three Japanese offerings will be a success. Or one will be a success and the other two will see average sales."

Toyota has competed here with the Echo, but it did not sell well and Toyota pulled the car off the market for the 2005 model year.

The Yaris has been very successful overseas -- it is Toyota's best-selling model in Europe, where gas is far more expensive, and streets and parking places can be much tighter than in most of the United States. It's also been a success in Japan, where it goes by the name Vitz.

Honda's and Nissan's new entries into the U.S. market also are models with strong overseas sales.
Meanwhile Ford and DaimlerChrysler have chosen to stay out of the market, at least for now, despite having some offerings in their overseas brands.

Ed Hellwig, senior editor for Edmunds.com, who has test-driven both the Yaris and Aveo, said that the Toyota offering is a noticeable step up from both its GM competition as well as Toyota's old Echo.

Edmunds.com provides automotive data and content for CNN.com's automotive Websites.

"Aveo is still a basic utilitarian interior," he said. "The Yaris does a much better job presenting a look and feel of being more upscale. You don't get in and immediately think that you're in one of the cheapest cars on the market."

Experts say the segment is being helped by the look of the new subcompacts. While the Mini Cooper is priced well above these entry-level economy vehicles, it helped open American car buyers' eyes that small cars could be attractive, and the new models build on that.

"The new sub-compacts are a lot more easy on the eyes than the Toyota Echo and the Ford Fiesta," said Jesse Toprak, executive director of industry analysis for Edmunds.

Chevy says that it's ready for the new Japanese assault, with a newly designed version of the Aveo due out in July as well. It says the Aveo is already being sold in more than 100 countries and the new version will eventually reach 140.

"We have experience competing with those players, and we've competed successfully," said Chevy spokeswoman Maru Santiago. "We're certainly coming from a position of strength."

But experts say that GM's lack of marketing support for Aveo won't cut it in the face of the new competition.

"I think Chevy will not be able to leave Aveo unsupported in the market place," said McCready.

Just as Info. only. My dealership has sold maybe a total of 7-10 Aveo's period.

We stock maybe 3-5 of them.In Franklin, TN. which is in Williamson Cnty. The majority of buyers here go for the Suv, Truck thing. The Aveo is not for the most part even discussed.

Toyota Yaris??? Only estimated at 34 mpg city, 40 hwy...............not very good. One would expect a 2300 lb car of this size to achieve at least 47-50 mpg. Come on......all you automakers have the technology to produce 60-90 mpg cars. Lets get serious about this!

Yes, it could be better. Are they trading off acceleration or the convience of an automatic?

Hi Bill:

___I have been screaming that same tune for over 6 months now in terms of both the Fit and the Yaris. I still have high hopes for the Nissan Versa but it uses a much higher 125 + HP ICE. Nissan is touting a 38 mpg rating combined but that remains to be seen. I guess the real reason I am so ticked is that the 03 Toyota Echo was rated at 35/43 and the much heavier and much more powerful 03 - 06 Corolla is still rated at 32/41 w/ a stick! I have no idea why the manufacturers are screwing over the public like this. A much taller 4th and 5th, Atkinsonize all 3 of the B-Class sized Sub’s intakes, and 50 + mpg out on the highway is a given! Ford should be jumping on this with the Focus 2.0E as well given what the Escape HEV can achieve out on the highway using the 2.0’s larger heads for its 2.3L displacement driving a much more massive and far less aerodynamically clean automobile … One screw up after another and it is adding up to truly monumental mistake given our current oil dependency and total world oil supply situation :(

Hi Psy:

___Although a huge step down in terms of semi-luxurious appointments and feel, I personally cannot wait to get my hands on the 3 door Yaris w/ a stick and the 5 door Versa with the same. I believe they will both achieve a bit beyond the 06 Civic’s FE capabilities other then the HCH-I/II but only time will tell.

___Not that I would like to own one because even though I think the Yaris is “cute”, it is lacking all the appointments you and I are used to in the Honda Civic/Accord and Acura MDX we personally own. I felt the Yaris’ seating ergonomics was better then that of the Corolla with fit/finish/feel being similar. The Yaris’ internal controls were definitely cheap feeling but I will need some real time behind the Yaris’ windscreen to understand its real FE capabilities and how it feels over a week or so time frame.

___Good Luck

i'd buy these cars if they were cheaper than their gas guzzling counterparts. But no there's a premium for smaller efficent cars go figure...

at least in canada. (cheaper to get a corolla 06 than a yaris 06 :S)

Seeing I was raised in small cars. Learned to drive on a 1967 Fiat 850 Coupe. Have driven more than my share of Fiat 600's and 500's, true Mini's. Hell I even owned a tiny little Subraru. Subraru was a two stroke along with a tiny Saab that was a two stroke. I wish I could remember there model numbers.

Im no stranger to mini/micro cars. LMAO. One of my fav. cars was my Festiva. 40 mpg with the A/C on and would top 50 mpg with no problem. And as pointed out by another user here that likes hatch backs. It was a hatch. I carried my 32" Proscan TV in the box in the back of the Festiva.

Compared to my Festiva Im not seeing much improvement in the current crop of cars that are coming. The price in some case's as dubbled compared to the Festiva and MPG isnt one bit better. They are abit more stylish and have afew more features. But truthfuly there isnt much.

I would fig. my Festive would sell now at the 10k price point in todays market. I paid 7k for the Festiva brand spanking new 91 or 92,,, cant remember. It had everything that could be had on one except the auto tranny.

Im very disapointed with the big Asian three for not pushing the FE envolope harded in these new cars. I think they fear doing so. Would cause them to ruin there hybrid sales. You would think in the case of the FIT. It would slot above my Civic's mpg rateings and below a HCHII's numbers. But No,,, its rated like the Civic.

Time will tell. But the cats has been let out of the bag so to speak. Wayne mentioned the Echo and the Corolla's FE. And then theres the pittyful Yaris. That should be on the tales of the Pirus.

It would seem the college boys and girls have struck again with there MBA's and Marketing degree's and have once again screwed things up.
