View Full Version : Just got a 2008 HCH yesterday.. I love it!
Euclid's Brother 10-05-2010, 06:17 PM Hi Everyone.. I'm new here.. I just bought a 2008 HCH and came searching for hypermiling techniques.
The first 30 miles off the lot I averaged about 32 mpg.. but after reading here last night, I reset before going to work and managed 44.5, w/AC, stopping a few minutes for a school bus and about 6 lights. The trip is about 10 miles and about 6 of it is highway.
After about 70 miles combined city/highway, I'm still at 40.3 (would have been higher, but stopped at the dealer to have a new key programmed and they knocked off 2mpg's and 3 bars of SoC just pulling it in the garage and back out..
I'm still trying to get these techniques down. I don't have a scan gauge, but I think i've managed to get into SAHM mode a few times, but after about 15 seconds, i feel the bump says it got booted out. I've been doing the "fake shifts" and see the iFCD go way up for a bit, then suddendly i feel the bump and it drops way back down below 40. Even though no assist bars come up.
If there are any Dallas based HCH hypermilers, I'd love to meet up and let you test drive this car and give me some personal tips.
Thanks,
EB
PS. My tires are made by DORAL and show a MAX of 51 PSI. Going by what I read in an article here, I should set the front to 49psi (max-2) and the rear to 47 (max -4). Is that too high? Should I go more like 42 to 44?

short trips where the engine barely gets to full temp give poor mileage.

If there is a bump, that was probably the engine going from electric glide to engine-on. There's no bump going in and out of SAHM, and you usually see from 75-90 MPG on the IFCD display. If the IFCD shows full bars, that usually means the engine is off, either coasting or in EV glide.

Higher tire pressure usually helps. If your tires are not low rolling resistance, then you won;t get the kind of mileage others are reporting. Still, more pressure should help.

Euclid's Brother 10-06-2010, 10:21 AM Thank for the info jmelson.
I bumped up the pressure to 43psi and got 44.9mpg this morning on my 10.5 mile trip to work. These are not LRR tires. They are pretty much the cheapest tires available, but that's what was on when I got it. :(
I'll be very happy if I can hold it in the low 50 mpgs once I have these techniques down. That will pretty much triple the mileage I was getting my prev suv ('01 Suzuki xl7). But even if I only manage 45mpg average, then it's still awsome.
Just want to tweak out the most I can get. w/o spending extra money on new tires right now.
cswee1932 10-06-2010, 02:12 PM Hey Euclid,
Congrats on the new Hybrid!
I picked up an '07 HCHII back in mid to late August with the idea that if I was going to change vehicles, it would have to do better than 36-39mpg I was getting in my 01 Honda Civic. I have averaged 54mpg so far (I believe thats what it says in my signature).
I must say the civic has changed a TON in the time since I picked up my 01. They are soo much quieter inside, and feel extremely solid.
The more you use the hypermiling techniques on this site the more this car will reward you.

Euclid's Brother 10-06-2010, 05:10 PM Nice work on the '07 HCH. I'd love to average 54mpg. But I rarely drive more that 10 to 15 miles at a time.
Just how much differecet will LRR tires make? Are we talking about 1-2mpg or 10mpg or more?

I think definitely more than 1-2 MPG, judging from a couple people who went the other way. I think easily 5 MPG, maybe even more.
You might look into getting an engine block heater, it makes a big difference at least when starting from home.
In these mid-temperature days, I get a pretty easy 56 MPG on my commute, as long as I can keep my wife and daughter from driving it in between. I still have the OEM LRR tires.

Hi Euclid's Brother:
Sorry I missed your request until now but in case you have not read it, Tarabell's Adapting Basic Hypermiling_Techniques to the HCH-II (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1306) is a must read for any HCH-II driver.
From there, read up on some of Msantos’ additions as the HCH-II for a highway driver is the best we have in all of North America at the moment!
Good Luck
Wayne
