So today I waited for my gas light to come on, and when it did, I went to fill up! To my surprise I totally underestimated my MPG's, figuring on close to 48, but when I actually filled up and did some math, it was 56.13mpgs, that was 422.7 miles on 7.53 gallons.

Now if I can improve on this, It'll be even more exciting!

I must say, after doing my most to get high 30's in my old 2001 Civic, the hybrid seems alot easier!

We shall see with the next tank how things go!!

Wish me luck!

You just stumbled onto a rarely discussed but very unique HCH-II attribute: The frequent understatement of its real efficiency by its own instrumentation. Talk about modesty, eh? ;)

However, I must say that the discrepancy is bit too high since we usually expect 2-4 MPGs and not much more than that. Anyhow, I believe what Sean is hinting at applies here and that is that the dealer filled tanks is fraught with uncertainties and must often be adjusted and validated against subsequent fill-ups.

BTW: Excellent job.

Chris

If you only got 7.53 gallons in after the low fuel light came on, i think you didn't fill the tank anywhere near full, so you are getting a false reading. I usually do not run it until the light comes on, and put 9.5 US gallons into the tank. When the light does come on, it takes more like 10 - 10.5 gallons to fill it.

Couple of thoughts:

* Are you registered with Honda as the owner? Either way, there is a software update for your car just happening, and there are a few threads here on the subject. We're booked to have it done this coming Thursday, and I'm looking forward to it with the enthusiasm of a flu shot... All-in-all, I'm hoping it's a good thing.

* We rarely get to the low fuel light going on before refueling, prefer instead to gas up anywhere below half full, just whenever it's convenient. And yes, it could very well be the odometer was set sometime other than at the last fueling. Once you get a few tanks you'll likely see calculated mileage slightly better than the in-dash display.

I don't bother to calculate anymore, just rely on the dash display. I know it's a little pessimistic, but it's at least fairly consistant.

Before I purchased the car from Honda, I asked the Techs in the garage if the software had been updated, and they told me in order to be certified that the software has to be current.

I also picked it up with 3/4 of a tank of gas, counted out the "bars" of gas, then reset the trip odometer and hooked up my scangauge. I mostly used the scangauge as a guide to get the feel of the car since it wasn't calibrated yet.

When I refilled the car, I filled it up 2 bars past the amount that it came with; I then checked the amount I put in, wrote it down, and continued to fill it up with a full tank.

I know the MPG number I i calculated wasn't 100 percent spot on, but I'm pretty sure it's within 5mpg's up or down.

I'll see, but hopefully not soon ;-) I'm hoping to lose one trip a month to the gas station over my past 2001 Honda Civic...

So far this car blew away what I expected it to be, I absolutely love it!!!

Chris!!! So glad to be back and active here!!
