View Full Version : Have You Avoided Accidents/Tickets Hypermiling? Chuck 02-04-2007, 01:28 PM Have You Avoided Accidents/Tickets Hypermiling? (or at least driving non-aggressively?) highwater 02-04-2007, 03:06 PM No, actually the only ticket I've gotten in the last 10-12 years was FOR hypermiling. Last year going to HF 06, got one in KS. It seems I busted the right hand solid line a time or two....or three. ridge riding. I didn't try to explain that one. (to the deputy) Randall hobbit 02-04-2007, 03:48 PM I cannot count the times that not yet being up TO where something bad started happening has saved my ass, or how being fairly tentative about taking off into an intersection has let me avoid the yutz running the light from the other direction ... and you've heard my rants about following-distance ad nauseum; if it didn't do anything for me I wouldn't be so hot on it. Absolutely the type of behavior common to hypermiling produces much safer traffic flow on the roads, and I highly recommend it. Within reason, of course... . _H* brick 02-04-2007, 05:52 PM Fuel economy has slowed me down, for the most part. I never had a ticket before but I'm sure it was only a matter of time. Collisions, it's impossible for me to know. My only collision occurred at less than 20mph and I don't think anything would have changed the outcome. Chuck 02-04-2007, 06:34 PM For me see, Hypermiling Kept Me Out of An Accident This Morning (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/the-daily-grind/t-hypermiling-kept-me-out-of-an-accident-this-morning-3410.html) Back in 1994, I was trying to get from Dallas to Laramie, Wyoming on just two tanks in my 88 CRX HF (10-gallon tank - basically a non-hybrid predecessor of the Insight). Lucky me - as I was hypermiling to get to a station on US287, it went downhill crossing into Wyoming....where State Troopers were busy greeting people. Couple of other instances like that. Hot Georgia 02-08-2007, 01:41 AM Like many people here I used to be a hellion speeder. Shortly after I began hypermiling the cops came out in force and appeared in several places I'd never expect them to be hiding. So I'd have to definitely say that I've avoided several tickets. I've been stopped twice for "Odd driving behavior" but no tickets. But I do understand cuz it's late at night-wee morning hours and they're trolling for drunks. But I wish the cops would stop tailgating  -Steve tarabell 02-08-2007, 09:37 AM I was another speeder. Though somehow I never got ticketed, I'm sure the odds would have made it happen eventually. Or more likely some kind of accident. Now I only worry about doing the CA roll through stop signs--the 4-way kind (never the 2-way). locutus 02-08-2007, 10:35 AM It's nice driving by a speed trap on the highway and not having one of those "oh crap" moments or instinctively tapping the brakes (anymore). The things I might worry about now are rolling 4-way stops (where there's no cross traffic to be seen), the high end of a pulse on a 25MPH road, or speed at the bottom of hills. On 30MPH+ roads though it's concentrating on MPG (and the things that come with it, so by extension driving awareness ;)) and not giving a passing police car a second thought. vBulletin® v3.6.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
