Hello!

I was on the boards here a while ago after I bought an '04 Aveo. I had that car for all of three months before it got rear-ended and totaled. After that, I wasn't around here much.

After an interim period with a Neon, I'm now back in a car more to my liking: tiny and weird looking!

I bought a '94 Suzuki Swift sedan from a seller on Craigslist and, with the help of a mechanic friend, finally have it up and running. It still needs work, but after my first fill up yesterday I calculate 40.5 mpg. Not too bad for the four cylinder model. I'm hoping for better on the highway, especially once the current high-idle issue is fixed.

Anyway, I just thought I'd drop in and say hi and see if anyone wants to share tips on economy modding the Swift. I've removed the (non-functional) air conditioning already. Next on my list is a grill block and maybe a passenger side mirror delete.

Oh, I even have some pictures of the new car. Perseverance is her name, or Percy for short. There are some other cars I've owned through the years in this set too, but you're looking for the blue Swift at the end. Can't miss it!

Welcome back!
Check with Dale (drimportracing) about what can be done with the new ride because it shares its platform and powerplant with the Chevy/Geo Metro. And Dale is our resident King Of All Metros. I think he already swapped out the final drive in the transmission on his car. And he can tell you what's good about the car, and what to beware of so that you can get the best MPG and longevity from the new Swift.

I love the old delta 88s. I've had 2. First one had well over 200k on her when the body fell apart around the drive train. The second died the same way but i wasn't giving up that Olds 307 4 barrel. Its still in my garage waiting for a decent southern body to bring it back to life........./sigh

Ah, you spotted the 88 in the photo album too?! Those 88s with the 307 with that tricky computerized Q-Jet (with worn throttle bushings) and 200-4R were good for 14/20 under the 2008 EPA rating. That actually isn't bad considering it's a 5.0L carbureted V8 in a 3800 pound car. The Ford Panther cars of recent years are rated 15/23 with a 4.6L SFI engine.

The '94 Swift 1.3L is rated 31/39 with 5MT and 25/31 with 3AT. So with a stick, the Swift goes twice as far on a gallon - city or highway - as the mid '80s Delta.

Nice little car there. My guess is it would get better mileage off the bat by removing the packers sticker.:D Sorry you lost the Aveo to an accident.I am looking for more guys driving them to see what numbers they are getting... good luck with your new ride.

Ahh yes, never had too many issues with the carb, the trannies were a bit finicky but when they were working, they shifted smooth as silk. I always got between 18 and 24 mpg with the 4 door '83:flag:, never checked back when i had the 2 door '81. I had a 95 crown vic that was FI back in 2000. My mpg was about the same as the 88 with more toys, more comfortable seat and the coolest thing....i looked like a cop which got me out of tickets. :flag:

Hi Stormdog:

Welcome back and it is nice to see an older fuel miser back on the road after multiple years of neglect. What kind of trouble did you have to cure once it was in your hands?
