 It is hard to get great numbers out of my current Aveo. It gives me a consistant 32 mpg 80% in town 20% hwy for the tank with very disiplined driving. I am working so hard at coasting and engine off coasting as often as I can I also started bump starting a while ago now and think it is helping. I am still in need of a scan guage though to see instant improvment or just what i'm getting for individual trips instead of the tank all the time. I had a few more hwy miles on the last tank and it gave me a 36.7 avg. Still that is 55-60 mph on the freeway. I know it's no hybrid but it is a challenge and gets me a little discouraged sometimes. I really shouldn't complain though many people in this cheap little ride are getting way worse with the auto and in town driving.Mine is fairly good with the 5 speed. Not giving up!

Please don't give up! There is a lot more available in that little car but you'll need a SG to tease it out. Any chance you can get one soon?

If there is any chance you can get down here to Coon Rapids my offer to do a clinic still stands.

When you say around town, what does that mean- beep-and-creep, stopsign-to-stopsign, 30mph arterial, or other?

It seems a little low, RLC might be able to help fine-tune it if you want.

Good Luck.

I am laid off right now and money is a little tight so getting a scan guage is getting oushed off I guess:biglol: I would kill for one to see how I am doing at every second with my Aveo. I know I can get more out of it! I just need that main tool, and yes a clinic from you RLC would help me out a ton. I also have yet to ride in my favorite car which you could help me with!:woot: Now when I say town I mean a small town of 4000 people and pretty much a hypermilers dream for in town driving. I have found the streets that have no stop signs and can coast often. I usually try and judge how far I have and key off and back to start and coast till I use minimal brake to the stop and if it's a stop sign, bump start and go otherwise if at red light I wait and start with key and continue on. I am no pro but I work at it. But sometimes if you aren't showed how or don't see results until tank needs to be filled you already cost yourself max mpg avg somewhere in there, you know? I try and drive 45mph on roads that are not so busy and on freeway I have been sticking to 60-62 and ok if my wife is with it's 65 but thats max. ( she thinks I'm obsessed with saving a buck on gas) When I have a scan guage it will help with that also.It will show her how i'm doing and improving. I know it's lame to some that I can't fork out 160 bucks for a sg now but being laid off for going on 1.5 yrs here is pretty bad. This is a tuff time and There is not alot of action in the carpenters union. Ok enough of my sap story.... I have a desire to see big results and I can't wait to get a sg!!! Thanks for the encouragement. Any tips for me are welcome.

I'm sorry to hear you are still out of work. :(

Any chance you can lower your freeway speed a bit more? You'll see a significant improvement just dropping down to 55mph from 60mph.

I can and I will! I'm in no hurry to go anywhere. I just leave earlier if need be. It's when my wife is with that I can not get away with it. She will have to drive our Saturn Vue do She doesn't hurt my avg. All though that is a waste to because we take the Aveo everywhere to double our mileage. I'll do what I can!:) Yeah and as far as work goes...it's hard to find something different to get into when you have done the same line of work for 11 years. I am only going to be 28 this yr though so I would like to get into something soon and move on with life.
Anymore obvious tips for me Sean?

Sorry to hear about the absence of employment, hope you can get something going soon.

About that clinic though.....I could sure use an experienced person to give me some hands on pointers for my HI2. I'm still looking for my first 60mpg tank.........soooo close. If there is a date in mind, i'd take the trip out if i can git off work. (which i usually can) :flag:

Do you have an engine block heater and are are you planning multiple stop trips so that you go to the furthest out destination first (allowing full warm up of the vehicle)? Have you been using reverse passing to extend glides? Keep an eye on that rear-view mirror so you can find the holes and fill them.

Potential parking? In a lot of places you can park such that you are able to roll quite a distance when you leave before you ever crank the engine. Along with that, avoid face-in parking; not only is reverse terrible for fuel economy because the gearing is so short, you have to stop and idle for a bit so you can go forward. Usually the engine is cold(er) when doing this, too... which only means more fuel used. If you have to use reverse, it is better to do it while parking when the engine is warm.

I try to do the potenial parking as much as possible. I will park out a ways if need be. What is the reverse passing? I do have a block heater. Should I be using it ? Does the cost of running the block heater over ride the mpg loss?>Thanks sean

Reverse passing is when you pull over not to pass someone, but to let them pass. I can often zig-zag my way down a road with a lower average speed than the rest of traffic without holding anyone up.

I use my block heaters all year round. You want to run the block heater about 2hrs before you leave in the morning.

When I am driving consistantly again I will do just that. I honestly never thought of just pulling to the side as often as need be. I always just chugged along and hoped they weren't getting mad. That will help alot to do that more. BTW I called the hall and they said I was #4 on the list to get called out of close to 1400 guys in the metro area that are laid off. I hope it's soon cause I want to get that sg bad!:Banane03:

No calls yet... Have a few people to help with some carpentry jobs they need done. Thinking about going back to school but don't know what to go for??? Hard too with 2 little ones now. My wife keeps saying it would all work out ,but I don't know yet. Need some direction on what to do as far as a possible career change.
