I was talking to wayne today about being able to go from chicago to detroit and back (330 miles each way). I was wondering how many cars are capable of this?
What models do you know of that can make this trip.
Obviously an HCH I can as there are many 700 mile tanks posted what about other hybrids (like the insight and prius). Any non hybrids?

My best tank is 686 miles. Looks like I could barely make the drive. But it would have to be under optimum conditions and I know that highway driving is not optimum. So you would have to count me out.

We could do it in either the Insight or VW Golf TDI. Best tank in the Insight 1500+ miles, best tank in the TDI 800+.....Louis

I think my car could do it...if Wayne was driving it.:D I would probably run out somewhere just west of the Michigan City/Valporaso area.

With the road mainly to myself I think I could have done it in the Accord. The Prius just doesn't have the tank capacity from what I've seen so far.

I could do it in my 92 Civic CX. At 70mpg with its 11.9 gal tank, I should have sufficient range.

Just had consecutive 633 and 640 mile tanks, each with ~10 cold starts. If you had 50F+ temps, 55-60MPH speeds and you only had a few cold starts, the Prius II is capable. Lower temps or higher speeds, you might want to have a gas can on board.
I used to make that trip weekly (Aurora, IL to Livonia, MI and back) in the CRX HF. The best FE ever was 66MPG at 55 MPH on the eastward leg. Round trips were typically 60 MPG. With a 10.5 gallon tank, the 85 HF would be on the hairy edge. The VX under the same conditions would be a cinch.

I could make it in ideal conditions. My highway tanks are at around 46 mpg at 55 mph and I have a 15 gallon tank.

In 1989, I drove from Fort Worth to Wichta Falls and got as high as 78mpg on my 88 CRX HF. I'm really starting to think I may have overstated it, as using only two gallons can be imprecise. Exact or not, Dan can go farther. I was going about 50mph without the A/C on the highway when the car was in it's best condition. Mid 60's is the highest figure I've seen on the CRX HF. Wish I had it now to see what it could do.

I think I could do it in spring or summer in the Civic. :)
