View Full Version : Low SOC Event

I had a strange thing happen in my 2009 FEH this evening when I started the car to go home from work. When I started out and pressed on the accelerator, there was a slight delay before the car would accelerate. The happened a couple of times right after I pulled out. Didn't hear anything unusual from the engine, just a slight delay before I felt the car speed up.

I happened to look at the SoC on my SG-II and was at 27! I've never seen it that low before. When I parked in the morning it was down to around 40 (lots of EV as I drove up several levels in the garage at work). What would account for that significant a drop?

By the time I got to the bottom of the parking garage SoC was up well into the 30's and within a sort period of time I could go EV. Everything seemed normal the rest of the way home.

Any ideas or is this something I should be concerned about?

Thanks,

Rick

Is it possible you experienced a recalibration event?

I hate to comment on an 09, but what you describe has happened to me on numerous occasions in my 05. This is just warm-up mode where the engine is idling unloaded via the generator while the traction motor supplies the motive force. If the SoC is low to begin with it can get pretty low before the warm-up mode ends and charging resumes.

There is a lower limit to how low the SoC will be allowed to go, but I haven't seen enough to determine exactly what that limit is. I have seen 19% SoC when I was doing stuff with the CAN bus and listening to the radio, but it started right up even with that low of an SoC.

From my experience in an 07, I concur with Carl. Although I have never seen my SoC go below 32%. It seems to me that it is related to how much distance you can cover with a low-steady acceleration before the ICE warms-up.

Normally the primary symptom of a recalibration is extremely high SoC. I have seen anywhere from 85-92% SoC on a recalibration and on 2 of those occasions I have been able to drive in EV mode for an extended period (over 2 miles).

It seems unusual that this would happen while you were descending in a parking garage though  I leave mine at about 40% everyday in the garage at work in the morning. When I leave, I mostly coast down the garage levels and the SoC is up to 44-45% by the time I get to exit gate. So where you needing to accelerate out of the garage? Start-up acceleration is the only time that I have seen the lower SoC number, so this is curious to me.

Rob,

This was right after I pulled out of the parking place and I had to drive a short distance before I could turn to where I could start going down. I noticed the low SoC very quickly after I started. I really think my SoC was already pretty low when I turned the car on, but I don't know for sure.

Anyway, has not happened since.
