View Full Version : milestone for my HCH

last week, though i forgot to watch to see what day, my HCHI crossed the 100,000 mile threshold. (the mileage log reads it as less, however there were some logs that were lost during the cross country run with this vehicle 2 years ago).

the lifetime mileage with the car is satisfying, especially since we have so many months of cold weather and lousy driving conditions.

doing the math with 54MPG as my average over 100,000, for the 5 years or so that i have had this car, i used about 1850 gallons of gas. had i continued with my CRV, and generously allowing 22MPG, i would have used about 4545 gallons, a difference of almost 2700 gallons. if i figure an average of 2.75/gallon, i have saved almost $7500 in fuel costs since its purchase.

i would think numbers like that would people at least give us some respect for having chosen to be fuel efficient. i am proud of the accomplishments that we "dangerous" hypermilers display with our cars.

Congrats on your milestone of 100 miles. Has the auto been relative trouble free? I guess the only down side of your story is the fact that it cost $20,000 or so to save $7500 in the cost of fuel, but then we do need wheels. This is always the case but maybe you should have kept the CRV for those five years and you would have been ahead by $12000 or so?

harold, the tradeoff would have been that i couldn't afford the fuel for the CRV. i was commuting 100 miles a day when gas went up to $3/gallon after katrina. i couldn't afford it. the CRV was only a year older than the HCH, i traded it on the civic. the price of both vehicles was close to even, so i think that's the flaw in your math. i would have paid about the same for the car, and spent 2-1/2 times as much to fuel it.

as far as cost for upkeep, the biggest repair and only problem i had was $600 to replace a shift cable. that was it. the body is in perfect condition, as is the interior, though with some animal hair here and there.

Great news Laurie! I, myself traded in my 2005 Element for the 2006 HCHII. I was getting about 19-20 mpg in the Element (before hypermiling). With a company incentive and the federal tax credit to buy it, it was the best car buying decision I've had yet.

My math is terrible Laurieau. These hybrids are fun cars to have. I enjoy not visiting the gas station every week. The longer I can go the happier I am. My only concern is should I or shouldn't I add Stable to my gas. H

i just checked my logs, and since i quit commuting, and now are retired, i am filling up once a month. i can live with that.

Yes, same here. Enjoy your retirement.

Congratulations Laurie!

I could easily imagine your car will be running at 300,000.

As with many things, I expect the public to quietly dismiss the early reports that hybrids are unreliable.

i am filling up once a month.

Congrats on the mileage. Are you using a gasoline stabilizer?
