View Full Version : Fast way to hack a hybrid

Heya Crew,

I have 3 days with a 2010 Chevy Hybrid Tahoe, and I had zero time to do any research on through the owner's manual.

If you only had 4 days to find out how to hack (find hidden tricks and techniques for hypermiling), how would you do it?

I have to admit, Chevy might be growing on me. I only took the hybrid around the block so far (literally, just to move it over in the driveway), and I haven't even installed my scan gauge yet. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Private emails are also greatly appreciated because I won't have easy access to this website until late tomorrow night.

Here it is.

Oh, one of *those*! Well, from all the other such bulbous
schnozzes I've seen on the roads, I would venture to guess that
the secret is to snug up as close behind any other traffic as
you dare, and then get even closer if they try to wave you off.

I did get to glance through the owner's manual. It has auto-stop and ev-only modes. Haven't read much else.

How is your drive going?

Has the "two-mode" met your expectations?

The drive was meh. 63 miles each way of battling flash floods, wind, rain, and hills. I managed to get 27 mpg out of it. It is rated 21/22.

The two modes were more annoying than helpful. I could get SAHM (~high 30's to low 40's) at ~60 mph using only fuel, but if it kicked into hybrid mode instead of fuel mode, that number dropped to mid-20 mpg. If I tried to SAHM at lower speeds, it would just stay in hybrid mode so I would accelerate to kick it back into fuel mode.

A few things I don't like about the Tahoe.

1. There's no battery gauge. I kind of like to know what's going on so I can adjust my style.
2. There's no MPG (instant or average) display on the dash. There's a gauge that says fuel economy with a green segment on it, but I can't figure out what it means. There are no numbers on it. The owner's manual has no explanation. And as far as I can tell, it hasn't moved.
3. It seems to not be as responsive when coming out of autostop.

I've only driven it about 150 miles total. I'll be taking it for a longer and less windy/rainy/hilly drive today.

Meh is a pretty good description of what I have read and heard about it too.

So where's the car in the picture?... All I see is a building with wheels... +1 at what Hobbit said!

Hehehe...........

I didn't have any better luck with it on Sunday. Little rain, but tons of side wind. *sigh*

Also, it doesn't pick up speed as quickly during a FAS. You'd think a big heavy car would pick up some speed, but it was just alright on FASing.

I'm back in my CRV now, getting some mad MPG with the warmer weather.
