View Full Version : Week of 12/25/2006-12/31/2006
Hi All:
___32 - 34 degrees F and heavy fog with a 43.9 displayed. Filled this morning and still have a 4% display less then actual ... Traffic was absolutely non-existent given 04:00 - 06:00 on Christmas morning everyone is at home sleeping hopefully ;)
___Good Luck

tbaleno 12-25-2006, 08:28 PM I hope for light traffic tomorrow I have to take my mother to midway around 8am
Hi Tom:
___I don’t think it will be that bad given the Holidays although 06:00 - 08:00 is about the worst time to head down either the IKE or Kennedy to jump on the Tri-state.
___The winds are just not working out for me this week so far … Head and side winds switching mid-day every trip so far although they have been lighter then the 25 + we saw in the Chicago area late last week! Just 44.9 in 32 – 34 degree temps on my way to work this morning :(
___Good Luck

diamondlarry 12-26-2006, 08:27 AM On the trip over the river and through the woods yesterday I got 56.0 on the 13.8 mile trip there and 50.6 coming home.
brick 12-26-2006, 05:38 PM I just filled up and got destroyed by the Prius tank bladder thing. It was a little warmer than last time I filled so I pumped a whole lot more fuel. Oh well...should get it back on the next fill or the one after.
I've been driving nearly 100% highway, with the MFD staying in the 52-54mpg range. Not too bad. I'm getting my snow tires mounted up soon, probably tomorrow, so I can only hope that they won't result in too dramatic of a decline in mileage. Not that we've had any snow or even cold weather to speak of but there's no way I'm risking a winter storm on these hills with the Integritys. If things are looking good I can always delay the swap.
tbaleno 12-26-2006, 10:08 PM Well, round trip to the airport today I managed about 55mpg. Temps were about 40ish.
Mostly I was just driving with load. Didn't do any fasing. Probably could have got a few more mpgs if I pushed it. I'm such an underachiever.
psyshack 12-27-2006, 09:51 PM 43 mpg for the day. slight tailwind in the morning. and a strong head wind this afternoon. AM temps low 30's, PM temps mid 50's. Winds are going to be bad the rest of the week with rain friday.
diamondlarry 12-27-2006, 11:02 PM I'm off this week so all of my segments are of varying(sp?) lengths. I was doing mid 50's segments until tonight. Then it got totally awesome. I decided to try a mod I heard about some time ago that involves modifying the MAP sensor signal. My uncle, who has been a mechanic for several years(20+), told me this weekend that, at least with my Saturn anyway, that the MAP sensor is the primary thing that the ECU looks at when determining mixture and that the O2 sensor is the second line of defense. What I did was to take a 50,000 ohm potentiometer and put it in-line with the wire going to the ECU from the MAP sensor. I adjusted until the car was nearly un-driveable then backed off slightly. Since I had nearly 360 miles on this tank I figured it would be a good time to do a fill-up so it would be easier to keep track of the benefits of this mod. When I got to the station I had 362.1 miles and took 6.97 gallons. This was an overfill to the top of the filler as are all of my fillups. This figured to 51.951 mpg. The SG2 reported 50.8.
On the way home from the station I adjusted the pot. and started for home on the 6.3 mile trip. I used P&G for all it's worth. Here is where the mileage got stupidly high. By the time I got backed into my garage at home, the SG was reading 98.5 mpg:eek: :woot: :woot: It was showing 102 before I started backing into the garage but dropped by the time I maneuvered in past my sons car.
Hi Larry:
___Now you are entering into the rare thin air at the top of the peak! Hot ****!
___Normal commute these past from, to and from segments again. 44.2 w/ 31 - 33 degree temps, 44.6 w/ 32 - 34 degree temps, and 48.5 with 38 - 42 degree temps and an off-center tailwind. I cannot wait until it gets warm again :D
___Good Luck

psyshack 12-28-2006, 07:55 AM 51.3 mpg for the drive in today. High 40'sf with a tailwind. I will pay this evening.
45 mpg for the drive home. Mid 50's and the wind switched to coming out of the east.

I took a picture of the SG readout with my son's camera but he had the flash turned on and it washed out the image in the worst possible spot it could. I uploaded it to the gallery. If someone can fix it with Photoshop or something, have at it. Otherwise, I think I'll delete it.
My greatest concern is that the SG is lying to me. I think I heard that SG uses MAP sensor for FE calcs. I'll do a top-off in the next day or two to try and confirm the results. Imagine, an FE increase like this for ~$2.50.
TonyPSchaefer 12-28-2006, 10:24 PM The Prius bladder in addition to the lower winter mileage is annoying. I have to get gas with less than 400 miles on the tank.
With the grill blocked off, I'm averaging 53.8 MPG.
That's better than the last tank. But you have to keep in mind that the temps have been up and the commuting traffic has been light during the holidays.
psyshack 12-29-2006, 08:15 AM 47 mpg for the am drive. Wind out of the southeast. Temps in the mid 50's.
ericbecky 12-29-2006, 11:26 AM Well I've bee able to keep things in the 70's or above this week. In fact last night I puller an 84 on the way home.
For fun, when I reached Madison I took the in town route to downtown vs my normal highway bypass. I still pulled out 76.1. This is helping bring my new tank of gas back into the 70+ range.
The good mpg is due to this week's short week, no carpooler, light traffic, and relatively warm temps.
brick 12-29-2006, 07:43 PM The Prius is doing pretty well, hanging on to 54mpg today despite temps between 28-37F and those big snow tires whining down the highway. I just got back from a jaunt around town and she did a pretty good job of keeping the ICE shut down, and spending more time in stealth mode than in recent days.
As for me, I'm getting a little better about making my job DWB, DWL, and general sane driving while I let the computers figure out when the ICE should be running and when it should be shut down. That seems to be giving me improved mileage in stop&go and around town driving, though it doesn't help much on the highway since the ICE spins constantly.
