Yesterday I had to drive my family to the airport 95 miles away. The gas light was on and I had just lost the last "pip" of gas. I knew I was good going there, but would need to fill up on the way back. Before I left the airport I approximated that I had a little more than half a tank left. Needless to say, I pushed it one too many exits before I started feeling the engine choke for more gas. I put the hazards on, threw it in neutral and killed the engine. I coasted a good ways before making it over halfway up an off ramp. I had a good laugh about it. My sister was kind enough to bring me about 3 gallons to get me going again.
Had I been able to go about 2 more miles I would have had name brand gas stations galore to choose from, lol. :D

Hey Jess, How well did it start after running it dry?And how far did you go after the last pip? The reason I ask is I am planing a 1350 Kilometer drive and hope to make it without filling up! I'll take a 1/2 gallon in the trunk just in case. The trip is from my place too Saskatoon east of home and hope to attempt this in May.
Cheers;

Hi Harold,
As soon as I felt it choking I cut the engine. I got 150 miles or 241.4 Kilometers on no bars, driving on a hilly interstate from 55-60+mph. 150 miles from no bars is typically what I can get out her. Overall, when the weather is warmer I can get 800+miles or 1287.4 Kilometers out of her.
You might be pushing it w/ just a half gallon tank. I would bring a gallon tank. :)

Just editorial: should "half a tank" be "half a gallon"?
Yeah, it is nice to see how much you can wring out of a tank, and your mileage has to be slightly better near empty, due to toting less gas around, but when the word "airport" is involved, I would tank up before setting out, if the tank was even around half.
BTW, that's one heck of a drive to your airport. We're sort of kitty-corner across town from YVR, and I thought that was a long run, at 45~50km (30~ miles).
Hi Mendel,
I see what you mean...I should have said.."I would bring a gallon of gas, not half a gallon." :D
Actually, our Charlotte airport is only 30mins away, but if one wants to save at least a $100 a ticket, they they'll drive to Greensboro. No worries at all if you drive a fuel sipper. ;)
(no worries, that is, unless, your fuel sipper has no fuel to sip)

Well I headed south down I-395 to Colville WA. today. Return trip of 115 miles and when I stopped in the garage at home I was showing 59.2 US mpg or 4 ltr. per 100 kil. At that rate I think I can maybe make it if I have favorable winds during the prairie leg of the trip? It will be close. I have no scan gauge so I'm using what came with the car only.
