Ok I know this is blasphemy and all, but in 2 years of driving my Fit I have never drove like an idiot till this tank. :o
I just wanted to see how bad it could be after reading many others geting low 30's.

Now it could of been worse.
No AC and did not ride around with window open.
I have a MT
It was impossible to drive up hard on a red light. Too much time DWB to stop that habbit

What I did doing was 65 to 70 on I-95. It's scary over there for sure. Speed limits used.
Never killed the engine but one time today at an UP bridge

So what did I see?

SG I feel was closer to reality
miles 9.66gal 40mpg 40mph-avg

391miles 9.076gal 43.08 mpg
pump odometer
pump drive was tilted a tad toward the fill side

Experiments over

P&G + FAS my way home with a decent winds and saw
16.7miles 38mph-avg 61.3mpg

Hi Paul:

___30 + % while driving like everybody else tells one heck of a story! That being the average Jane and Joe are driving completely over their heads from Point A to Point B, not getting their any sooner while pulling just 29 - 30 mpg in their Fit's :(

___Thanks for posting.

___Good Luck

The night I decided to "drive like an ass" on the last Masspike
segment to home, I still pulled in showing 52.something in the
prius... would probably be lower if I did it all the time, but
there's NFW I want to drive that way. eep.

I've have a few times like that too and it proves how your typical speeder does not think at all...even when speeding there are still a few things that will save fuel.

43 mpg sounds more like "win" to me, not fail. They did a good job building the car, and good driving is more than just "go slow".

When I see a reckless driver pass - it looks like they are speeding for therapy.

Actually, they need therapy to not feel the need to speed.

A lot of speeding has nothing to do with deadlines but senseless competition or anger management problems.

As a reformed speeder, I used to get a kick out of speeding everywhere I went. Never really focused on FE, just at getting ahead. It was a great place to let out, but now I don't seem to stress out behind the wheel (unless I catch an unexpected red light). I have received so many tickets over the past 10 years that I have lost count. I have to say hypermiling suits me much better, save money on fuel, tickets, and insurance. It has been 2 years since my last confession, I mean ticket.

I like the idea of testing the car to see how bad the mileage can get, but I now feel guilty about ruining my average. Will have time to test this in the summer though. With the AC on, I will do an entire tank or regular driving without turning the car off. I am always surprised that there are many people who can't get higher than the high 30's with the majority at the low 40's, not to mention some folks get low 30's. I guess some people are on the accelerator until 15feet from the red light.

Earlier this week I was at the Honda dealership and chatting with one of the Sr Salesmen. Talking about the 2010 Insight and my 2000 Insight and he mentioned about "a guy from the MidWest getting 60mpg in a standard Accord on CNN". Then I disclosed I knew this hypermiler and suggested that if Wayne could encourage people not to charge to intersections, weave in traffic, use common sense, he made his mark. ;)

Here's some more data from my test

3/17 AM drive
24.1miles 0.4hrs 0.65gal 49mph-avg 73mph-max 37mpg-avg

3/24 AM drive (game on) same route
24.1miles 0.5hrs 0.39gal 42mph-avg 61mph-max 61.8mpg-avg

I was trying to drive on the 17th to use almost 2X the fuel but fell short. Fit is dam capable even if drive like a nut. I estimate I'd have to of drive 80mph on I-95, maybe more to get 2X from my typical advanced skill methods
o So cost me 6min more time, (25% more time)
o Used 66% more fuel
o Pricely saftey gains

too bad the rest of the country could not see the value

yes that was darn clear, but the head scratcher to me is how do you get low 30's like the majority?????

As I did that tank, I was thinking the SG would be way off and the FE was low 30's.
I also supect many have automatics and run with AC on and that could explain lots of it. I also skipped the race to the light part.

I have never been one to speed as I have my 180+ mph dragster for that. Even when I drove my C2500 Suburban at 15mpg for 200kmiles and 10years, I rarely went over the speed limit.

Race car drivers are typically more cautious on the street because of out knowledge of BAD things that can happen. That's my excuse

___Any excuse to be a safer driver is a huge positive and completely acceptable in my book! Thank you. Now go out and drive like you should so we can see the really good numbers from now on :)

The summer before last I drove I-85 from Atlanta to Anderson, SC at 80 to 85 mph with the rest of the speeders in the fast lane and got 56mpg.

Four years ago I drove a tank in "fast and furious" mode revving up to redline and doing the typical stupid driver gas/brake pedal dance and managed to lower the mileage on my usual commute down to 56mpg.

The first tank in my civic si I drove like i used to just get a feel for the car and its capabilities. I did 28.8 mpg. been around 35 mpg the last 4 tanks.

On a REALLY bad day (middle of winter, super cold, headwind, late for work, wet roads, etc.) the worst I have gotten is a 24 mpg trip (since hypermiling).

I still can't understand how my tanks prior to hypermiling looked like this:
best/worst summer
29/26 (worst was long distance all on high speed freeways)
best worst winter
26/25

Very good test. I love the look of the Fit btw, great little car! I am noticing that when the mph numbers are posted around 35-45 or even 50 the mpg on alot of vehicles is so much better! I used to think that a steady speed of 65 in a 70 zone was being good but I see now I need to lower it some more to gain in the end. I need a scangauge it looks like everyone uses one. Is it most effective just trying to keep your instantanious mileage reading high all the time? This would make the most cents to me.My friend has a new chev silverado with the stock gauge and when coasting it really jumps up!

You have to watch the trip average more than the instant. Watching instant is good for learning, but after 10 minutes you already get the picture. Then, with that in the back of your mind, switch over to the average. Keep it moving up.
