I didn't exactly know where to put this question.

What is the amount of energy required to manufacture a 2006 Toyota Prius hybrid battery pack in terms of gallons of gasoline?

I hear from "skeptics" that it takes more energy to make the battery pack then I will save over the life of the car.

Hi VaBeachPrius:

___Not much and here are the emissions. Emissions are a direct proxy to energy consumed and the following graph is a comparison between a Prius II and a 2.0L equipped compact weighing the same with a PZEV emission rating.

It would be nice if there was a lot more data on this for an entire range of vehicles. I'd bet the Prius would look a lot better than the hit-and-run article from CNW Research earlier this year insinuating the manufacture of too many resources for it to be truly green.

A couple of us were sitting around last night catching up and
he tried to hand me the same counterargument to getting a hybrid,
although we immediately clarified and agreed that the energy hit
for the manufacture of *any* new car was probably more than that
of him keeping his old car & truck on the road for another 100
or 200 k miles.
.
But I have to deflect that "it takes more energy to make the
hybrid car" nonsense every so often, yes.

Interesting info Wayne. Thanks!

Kind of puts things in perspective. Anything similar available on the HCH-II? I read somewhere Toyota managers have a cradle to grave carbon budget to work within when running their programs. Have not heard about Honda.

Hi Bob:

___I know Honda could produce a similar assessment and they may in fact do this already but they are so tight lipped about everything you would need a signed and notarized letter from the president of Honda Motors in Japan to even see it let alone post it. Even then a Ninja would probably show up at your door and take matters into his own hands if you know what I mean :D

___You are correct about Toyota managers receiving a carbon budget according to Toyota’s Bill Reinert video linked a few weeks ago.

___I saw this Toyota provided LCA for the Prius II posted in an Edmunds forum maybe 3 years ago and for some reason I kept it?

___Good Luck
