View Full Version : When do u fill up/stop pumping?
Chalupa102 03-03-2010, 05:21 PM For SG2 owners, i was wondering for the best accuracy when do you guys fill up? Meaning do you fill up when you're at 1/4 tank, 1/8 tank, almost empty, etc. Also when do you stop pumping gas; when it first stops, second click off, top off, etc?
Right Lane Cruiser 03-03-2010, 05:53 PM As low as I can get it without risking running out and topped off (at least in the summer... topping off at -15F with a 10mph wind is no fun!).
bomber991 03-03-2010, 07:24 PM Depends on where I'll be driving for that particular trip. Once I get down to 1/4 of a tank, the needle drops past 1/8 and to empty with the low fuel light on within 50 miles or so.
For filling up, I haven't been driving often enough to have a regular fuel pump since I've lived here for the past year. So usually I fill up till the pump clicks, then I fill it again until the 2nd click. It seems like half the time after that first click, I can still get another 1 or 2 gallons into the car.
I stop after the first click, then go to the next .25 cents. So if the first click on the slowest setting stops at $26.05 I wait about fifteen seconds and fill to $26.25.
It gets me pretty close to even with my scan gauge fuel used. I'm usually with in a tenth of a gallon between the pump and the Scan Gauge when I reset it at fill up.
lxmike 03-03-2010, 08:12 PM It depends where it stops. if it's under .50 cents then i'll go to the next dollar. otherwise i'll just get to some even amount like .20,.40...
wptski 03-03-2010, 10:42 PM Around one gallon past the first shut off plus to the nearest $0.25.
worthywads 03-03-2010, 11:10 PM I'm confused on going to a specific cents or a round number, I haven't gone in to pay in probably 10 years and would avoid any place I'd had to, hence why care where you stop ?
drimportracing 03-04-2010, 12:08 AM I fill when I'm down to the last 2 miles of gas and top off when I can't get anymore gas in the tank and neck. 9.5 gallon tank holds 10.4 gallons max. :D - Dale
vtec-e 03-04-2010, 06:08 AM I refill when the tank is down to its last 3 litres. Then i fill it to the very top.

PaleMelanesian 03-04-2010, 08:07 AM I fill when it's close to empty.
I top off, or close to. I make a note of when the first click happens, and then I can judge how close to "really truly full" it is by how far past that point I am.
rdprice64 03-04-2010, 09:57 AM I usually fill-up once my "Miles to Empty" reaches zero on the OEM readout, which is fairly constantly at the 13 gallon mark on the pump and the SGII. I fill to the first click, but I make sure that the pump is set to the slowest setting, so that when it clicks, it is truly at the maximum without any additional pumping.
WoodyWoodchuck 03-04-2010, 10:26 AM I try to fill up once a week, just under half a tank summer, lower in the winter. I use the same station same pump usually, set the handle to the first catch when it clicks I’m done. It might not be all I can fit in the tank but I believe I am getting consistent fills.
nidly 03-05-2010, 07:11 PM My routine has been to try to calibrate the fuel gauge at empty so I know when it runs out.
I try to fill as close to E as possible without running out since there's an abundance of stations around me and I have no brand preference. I fill it till it is full and won't run down anymore so I get it exactly the same mark at each fill-up.
Every vehicle I've had experience with will take more than the tank's listed capacity in the manual. It must be a nominal capacity. My blazer will take over 19 gallons without running empty. My venture will take 27 + without running empty.
gabe1475 03-05-2010, 07:39 PM I also fill up depending on where I am going. If going on a longer trip I usually dont let it go much under 1/4 tank, but when commuting with a gas station every second corner, I tend to run it fairly dry. Down to the last .2 or .3 gallons per the smart gauge. Have to be careful once the countdown begins. That last gallon dissapears very quickly.
Mendel Leisk 03-05-2010, 08:39 PM I usually fill up around 1/4 tank remaining, on our HCHII. When it shows nothing remaining (digital bar graph), a warning light comes on, and you've actually got 6~8 liters sloshing in tank. If that occurs it's drop everything and get it filled. I'll usually fill on the weekend, even if the level's a little higher, just to avoid my wife having to hassle it mid-week.
I fill till it shuts off the first time, and dub it done. The dollars-and-cents doesn't even register with me, just paying with credit card.

While I don't so this, I do have a comment about paying at the pump.
You can call me old fashioned, but if I MUST pay at the pump, I go to a different station. That station just told me "We don't trust you".
At my usual station I can get my gas, cofee, and anything else I need all at one time.
And yes, I usually pay in cash, not with plastic (either debit or credit).
While I realize that they may have to make this type of business decision with drive-offs becoming more common, my gut still has problems with it. It's one of those cases where the station looses my business, but I can honestly say "It's not you, it's me".
St. Mushroom 03-11-2010, 08:52 AM 1/4 - 1/5 always to full, and then some... Because I use cash, the pump guy always tries to get it up to the next dollar, which messes up the calibration some.
Interestingly, this one station near me gives a 4 cent discount for using cash instead of credit, unfortunately it's not top tier gas.

Well we'll never agree on this subject. :Banane35: I rarely have more than $40 in my wallet and those same 2 $20s can remain untouched in my wallet for 3-4 months........... Almost never use cash. Don't drink coffee either, no need to go inside a convenience store, just a gas station to me.
I have earned 2 free tickets to Key West, Frankfurt, Germany and Washington DC over the last 6 years with credit card points, without ever paying any interest or fees. Plastic works for me.
Taliesin 03-12-2010, 06:25 PM Well we'll never agree on this subject. :Banane35:
Here is a toast to agreeing to disagree!
:Banane35:
I normally pull out $500 every paycheck (though I have dropped this to $400 lately). This goes to various bills ($300 right off to the room mate for electric, water, trash, tv, internet, etc.), gas, food, coffee, etc.
I save the debit card for bigger bills (truck, boat, and credit card) and the credit card for "unforseen" expenses that can not wait.
I have used the debit card more in the past, but I am just old-fashioned and feel better with a few dollars in the pocket. I also had a bad habit of spending more with the debit card than doing what I do now.
Hi All:
___Usually down near 0 MTE unless I have a specific place to go and cannot do the RT, and then I will fill a few miles early.

raveneon 03-24-2010, 12:48 PM I fillup when the low fuel light comes on and stop when the pump kicks off (first click) I really didn't realize there were so many other ways to do this lol. As for the paying inside or outside. I never use a station that does not allow pay at the pump. I personally think they should just go to unattended stations and save us the money they are paying the person(s) inside. I can't stand the whole process of go in and give them money, pump, and then go back and get your change. What a hassle. The plastic at the pump is so much easier, there is no chance of impulse buying and you have statements to track it all. Cash is so easy to lose track of.

Paying first is a area problem because of people driving off without paying. I pump then pay and it's a little bit cheaper if you pay cash.
