I was messing about with my mileage log data, and I thought I'd find out how much fuel I've been using per day in my car. The result: 1.38 l/day average since I joined CleanMPG just over a year ago (about 0.36 US gallons).

At my thirstiest, I guzzled 33l in nine days, an average of 3.62l/day. (At the time, I was working at a client about 50km away from home).

At my most frugal, I managed about 0.8l/day a few times, although most of those tanks involved parking the car at an airport and flying somewhere for a few days, which kind of defeats the purpose I suppose.

So - how much fuel do you use per day?

Usually 0.3 - 0.35 gallons a day for me. (0.39 over my entire CleanMPG history, including my poor first year)

Triple that for the Ody.

I've used .58 gpd in my Sentra since I started hypermiling. I'm not including my Scion, as 7200 of its 11000 miles were racked up on one cross-country vacation trip last Summer.

I'm in same range as Andrew, but I'm sure he has a longer commute than me.

I just checked and yesterdays numbers was 43.2 over 13.6 mile fuel used was .31 gallons.

Still calibrating, but it's looking like now in the wintertime I'm pulling .58 to .63 gallons per day. In contrast, my old car was .90 to 1.10 gallons. So, by ditching the Lumina for the Elantra I've basically cut my usage IN HALF.

I'm using between three and three and a quarter gallons a week.

That's a in the ball park guess with out checking the official numbers.

At least it isn't as bad as my old car the Prius replaced, which used between seven and eight gallons a week.

I've driven my car 600 miles since August, and I've put 1700 miles on the scooter. That works out to about 34 gallons, or 0.2 gallon a day. The next 6 month should see less use of the car.

I use between 1 and 1.5 gallons per day going back and forth to college with a trip to the gym included. On Mondays i don't go to the gym, but i use the bicycle to commute instead of the car. Tuesdays i use the least amount of fuel at about 1.20 gallons or a little less. Thursdays i typically use the most at about 1.5 gallons because i pick up my friend's son from school and take him to his house. Eventually on Fridays as well i wanna start riding the bicycle to cut down even more on fuel use during the week.

Mine with the Dakota 4x4 V6 Manual is between 1.2 and 1.5 gals a day.

282.555 gals last year / (365 day - (104 days for weekends + 10 days of holidays and vaction))

Typically what I am getting during the winter is about 1.3-1.5 for the trip to work and back home (~27 miles)

I'm using 2.237 gallons per day since January 1st. This is including the 1 day off a week, when I normally don't drive anywhere.

118.588 gallons for 53 days.

If I assume only working days, it's 45 days of use, resulting in 2.635 gallons per day.

Estimated 824.755 gallons per year at that rate.

That's about 83 stops at the gas station a year. That's over 5.5 hours of pumping gas at 4 minutes per visit. That can't be good. I need a car that gets 3600mpg so I can fill up my 10+ gallon tank, once a year.

I don't like being the "leader" in this poll, unfortunately for the Earth, I suspect someone may edge me out soon enough. :o - Dale

Interesting question, Simon. Since starting my logs, I've averaged about 1.64L (0.43 gal) per day.

In the Prius, my commute is 0.08 gallons per day round trip. But when you add in business miles, vacations, taking care of parents, and the rest of living life, not all on the Prius, my wife and I average around 0.55 gallons per day EACH (15000/yr Prius at 50mpg + 2500/yr CRV at 25mpg).

That's far lower than before Prius, but still surprisingly high to me.

To mitigate:
Commute in one vehicle more often.
Bring lunch to work more.
Walk to lunch more.
Combine errands better.
Trade CRV for a BEV (Leaf?), then use BEV locally instead of Prius.

A most thought-provoking post.

Going all the way back to when I joined CleanMPG it averages 1.14.

I made a mistake in my voting and I was only counting one-way, so it should be 1-2 gallons.

My normal commute is 52 miles, and my worst tank in the last year has been 30 mpg, so still less than 2 gallons.
At my best I have managed a 45 mpg day, so I could possibly see a one gallon day on my normal commute when summer hits.

I think I'm just under 2 gal/day. ~ 20 miles each way to work. 23mpg, give or take.
Great for a truck, horrible for a solo commute.

During the summer I can make a commute on about 1/3g... but yesterday was a pretty good day for winter and I only managed 0.54g used (46.2mi). :o

Hi

About 0.66l/day, new commute is now RT 5m (although very very crowded, motorbike to car ratio 10:1). Before changing countries, home and job it was just under 2gal/day even in a Prius. I might try to cycle or get a scooter but the morning pollution is just too much...

Good Luck

I've been tracking since May 2008.

639 days
974.263 galons
1.525 gal/day

I need a shorter commute...:(

At my best I'm using 1.9138 gallons per day, every day since September 5th 2008. (536 days) This does get me out of the lonely 2 gallon and up bracket. My real daily use is higher since I park the car once a week.

I'm going to work on this, I don't want to be the FSP of hypermilers. :o - Dale

If I discount times that I flew to another state for vacations, etc., I seem to be filling up with "about" 9 gallons "about" every 11 days or so. Puts me right around 0.8 gallons per day. And interesting to me, it puts me around 35 miles per day, which is more than I thought!

Quick, someone give Dale a Prius! It's interesting to find that the guy using the most fuel so far is also driving one of the smallest, most unassuming cars. Makes you wonder about all those Lamborghini drivers out there.

But seriously, driving for work is bound to rack up the miles and the gallons, and there can't be many better options than a small, light car.

Glad I managed to provoke some thought.

If I could deliver with a motorcycle I would. Trike with a box in the back would be nice. I'm using a lot of fuel but imagine what others at my store are consuming.

I'll try to remember what everyone drives:

Geo Metro LSi *hypermiles :D
Ford Focus ZX3 *hypermiles, she uses some techniques.
Honda Accord
Little truck *hypermiles and is a member here, though I don't know his screen name.
Dodge Dakota
Some kinda Van
Another Van
Ford Explorer *antihypermiler
Blazer
Mustang 5.0 *antihypermiler
Nissan Frontier *antihypermiler

Now imagine all the other pizza delivery stores in America. There are 67554 (http://digital.pmq.com/pizzamagazine/200909/?pg=11) pizza restaurants according to the link from 2009, not all of them deliver but it would be safe to say half do.

You figure 33,000 stores, that is a lot of gasoline every day. About 30-40 gallons a day per store. I'm figuring low at 3 gallons per driver. I used to deliver with a Honda Civic Si that got 22mpg zero hypermiling and I worked two delivery jobs 5 days a week for a total of 900 miles a week. That was 8 gallons a day for 1.5 years. I'm sorry. :o

If all the pizza drivers in America would learn to hypermile the savings would be astounding.

I'll take a white Prius please. :D - Dale

Yikes! That's roughly 70,200mi in just 18 months!

We are glad you are here, Dale... and maybe we'll have to take donations for that Prius. :p

Police are in a similar situation. I worked on a patrol a while back, and we put 250 miles on it in 12 hours. Not really all that much until you figure all the others:

Just on this base: 5 patrols on day shift, 3 patrols on night shift. 2000 miles a day for a small community.
I don't even want to think of adding up all the miles driven by police across the nation.

PaleMelanesian

In the case of police, I don't think miles traveled accurately captures the total consumption, because so much of the time is spent idling and not moving. Maybe an engine hours meter, like used for aircraft, would be better.

I don't know how much I really use now. I don't drive except to the grocery store once or twice a week. I probably put about 20 miles on my car per week now. Also about once a month I'll go visit my parents, and unfortunately that's a 210 mile round-trip.

So if I never went to go visit, then I'd be doing <100 miles a month.

I calculated it all out and it comes out to about 0.32gallons per day.
