The last week of February is already upon us?? Man. That sure seemed to go quickly!

21F (13F windchill), 6mph cross/tailwind from the NW, overcast:

84.8mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)

The tank is back up to 80.3mpg over 66.1mi

I hope everyone has a good week ahead!

I am off work today! It Looks like it's gonna be a rainy day so i guess i'll stay in and nap a lil :D

I came in at just a touch over 55 mpg for the day. I had 30F and a fair amount of slush to contend with. The good news is that my Enginer kit is supposed to be here later this week.:) And, I'm getting an iTouch tomorrow so I'll be able to start keeping better track of my numbers again.

Congrats, Larry! I've been keeping my logs on my iPhone and that has worked quite well for me. :)

Be sure to post plenty of pictures when you start playing with those batteries. :D

Congrats, Larry! I've been keeping my logs on my iPhone and that has worked quite well for me. :)

Be sure to post plenty of pictures when you start playing with those batteries. :D

I'm not sure how soon I'll get to start installing the batteries. I have no heat in my garage.:( O may have to try and remedy that situation as soon as possible.;)

I been wondering(nosey) about you Larry! :)

:p It's kind of nice to have somebody nosey about us once in awhile anyway.:D

66.5 mpg to the gas station.

Filled up. 751 miles, 11.500 (;))gallons = 65.3 mpg. SG was predicting 65.7, but my gut told me that was optimistic. Last fill was a tad short.

71.5 / 1.1 miles from the station to work.

Well, that didn't work out too well. :p

I did a terrific job timing lights on the first 3/4 of my drive home and when I saw a bunch of vehicles approaching quickly on the fastest (and unfortunately single lane) section of my route I figured I would try my alternate route. Big mistake. It was obviously last plowed approximately NEVER. :( The roads have been clear for a while now and last week I was able to take my alternate route in Anoka without any issues. I wrongly assumed that the same would be true here, but I certainly discovered this quickly. My 87.4mpg average tanked back down to 84.3mpg in less than a mile. :p I couldn't pull that up any before hitting Anoka but did my best on that alternate mentioned above.

30F (21F windchill), 10mpg headwind from the NW, partly sunny:

87.1mpg for 23.4mi (Work to home)

The tank is up to 82.0mpg over 89.5mi

Day Total: 86.0mpg over 46.2mi

In other news, I finally dug a path over to the driver's door of the Elantra. I had to take the battery charger off of it back in early December because the alarm kept going off at unpredictable times. Enough snow had melted off I was able to get into it and pop the hood without clearing anything off and was pleasantly surprised to find that the battery hadn't tanked enough to give my SG-II amnesia again! :) I hooked up the charger again and found the switch indicating the hood is up (since I figure that's what was getting causing the alarm to go off even though the hood was just popped but not up), and used an old copper staple to wedge it in the closed position. That should keep the alarm at bay, I think.

I ended up with 67.8 mpg for the afternoon round trip which gave me 60.3 mpg for the day.

Well that was...interesting. Once again my college was one of the only schools not to cancel. Had to deal with un-plowed side roads, soaking wet main roads, and got stuck in my driveway multiple times. Given the horrible conditions, i'm pretty happy with the f/e today.

34F with snow/rain/sleet mix and very little winds

- 39.7mpg for 23.6 miles (it's only a 23.4 mile trip, so that means .2 miles were when i was spinning the tires on the driveway/side roads)

The tank has dropped way down to 42mpg as of now. Hopefully on the return trip things are in better shape.

Well that was frustrating. Every time I got close to pulling the trip average up I had another red light to contend with. When it wasn't that, it was a cop pulling a U-turn to catch the fellow in front of me... and forcing a big stab to my brakes in the process. :(

Oh well. Hopefully the drive home is better.

Hi, Mike -- I was at the restaurant about an hour but the car didn't get any warm up time over 0.9mi before that (it was off for about 1/3 of that distance). ;)

The roads are finally clear enough that I can get back to long coasting distances with the engine off and boy does it make a difference! With completely dry roads and little to no traffic I've managed better than 100mpg when the temps were in the low to mid 20's.

I was off to a great start this week, then came the rain. Along with the rain and wind came a hesitation at all engine speeds below 3,000 RPM.
I still got 22.8 mpg, but I can only imagine what I would have gotten had the weather, and consequently the truck, not taken a turn for the worse. First tank coming back from February vacation as well (wow, it's good to be a school employee, all those breaks I used to get as a kid are now back, now if only we got paid for them. :( )

Filled up yesterday and got 44.1 MPG, a new record for me by a tiny margin. It's encouraging to have a decent tank after the one before it, which was sharply worse than all of my previous tanks. I was fearing there was something wrong with the car (or the driver).

My commute to and from work averages out to around 41 MPG, and the difference gets made up by highway trips. Routes with the right topography can yield more than 50 MPG due to extended NICE-ON coasting opportunities (poor man's P&G?). Other routes are either too flat or require DFCO/braking when going downhill, which throws away energy. These are usually good for mid-40s.

I drove to Santa Cruz yesterday, which is about a 50 mile drive. About half the drive was on CA-17, a mountain highway that zig-zags up to 1800 ft. and back down, and is notorious for accidents and congestion, especially when wet. I was actually looking forward to this drive, since somehow I had never taken it southbound in my new car, and I thought it would be an interesting benchmark. My old car had to drop to third gear (being a four-speed) during parts of the southbound climb, and even when it was possible to use fourth gear, it could barely maintain speed without downshifting. My new car has a higher power-to-weight ratio, more gear ratios, and a more efficient transmission, so I was curious how it would fare during that climb. Unfortunately, I didn't get to find out. Just as soon as I got to the end of the freeway section and started climbing, traffic stopped completely. It barely moved for the next half hour, covering only a mile and a half. Of course, this was the steep climb, so there were no coasting opportunities. During that stretch I was stopped most of the time, and never made it past first gear. Eventually traffic started moving again, albeit a little slowly. Turns out a tree fell on the road earlier.

I thought the stop and crawl would absolutely kill my mileage, but I was surprised to average 43.9 MPG for the whole trip (including finding parking). For comparison, I got 45.4 MPG on the way back, and I started the return trip from a much higher elevation than my initial destination in Santa Cruz, which favors the return trip (averaged 85 MPG over the first 3 miles!).
