Dumb gasserhead question: why can diesel trucks soot, but a VW TDI can't?

Don't let hobbit see this. He will come up with some contraption to make his Prius do something similiar to get tailgaters off his back.

How about a huge mass of bubbles? A-la Lawrence Welk? ;)

This guy is an engineered exhaust leak waiting to happen.

I'm definitely tempted to chew this guy out, especially for doing it to the cyclists, but i think i'll hold my tongue. I had some idiot with a diesel pickup dually (*sp) pull up next to me driving on the highway a few weeks back and floor it to show off his loud exhaust.

i can't count the number of times i have had this happen. more brawn than brain....and no manners.

Definitely a first class a-hole, but I don't think there's any violation for which a citation can be issued.

At least I hope not: I did the same thing to a tailgater with my TDI the other day!

Chuck, to answer your question the reason is the TDI is designed to burn the fuel more completely and cleanly than the truck is ... although mine won't blow smoke anything like that truck, but if it's got petrodiesel in the tank (as it currently does from a recent trip out of town) it will still blow a bit of a cloud if you stomp it HARD. I had a guy (probably on the phone) who kept pulling up way too close. I'd flash the brakes and he'd back off for a few seconds, and then creep on my tail again. After a few of these, I eased on down to about 45 mph, then slammed it into 3rd and mashed the throttle back up to 60-ish. When the cloud dissipated I could see his turn signal ON and him moving over! Bwaahahaha! :D

Chuck, a TDI can make a lot of soot. It's all about the tuning. Stock, older ones like mine can make a faint haze. The new ones with the particulate filters shouldn't make anything visible. Frequently, with diesels tuned for high performance, there can be a lot of soot. Even the little 1.9 TDI can make plenty of smoke when tuned for power.

Soot generally means there's too much fuel for the amount of O2, and could be because of:

1) Something's wrong (plugged air filter, failed injector, etc)
2) Older technology. In the old days, heavy equipment operators actually thought soot was a good indicator of how much power you're making. That incorrect perception lives on.
3) The software and/or hardware have been modified to use more fuel and make more power. Some even specifically seek clouds of smoke (see #2 above).

Ive never seen visible anything out of my tailpipe, unless you count the condensation of water after a cold start. Today's diesels are 3 generations ahead of mine, and are gobs cleaner (at least till the tuners get a hold of 'em)

Some diesel owners get chips to modify their FI profile.

Don't the most recent one have a particle filter-mid 2007 on? I don't think it would be easy to soot things up with one of those-unless you bypassed the filter or removed it.

When I chased the video I found a bunch of related ones that
refer to "DPF delete" and are all proud of it.
