Hi Folks,

RydRyder here. Just joined. Riding a 2004 Duramax, Jeep Liberty Diesel and Ford Powerstroke. I have a GoldenFuel vege conversion on the Duramax with about 35,000 miles so far.

Wondering about the Chip tuner programmers I see advertised on eBay. Claim to save fuel economy by altering the signal sent to the computer. Anybody have experience with these.

I was going to do a search on this site to see if it has already been discussed, but I haven't discovered how to search the forums. Could use some help with that, too. I thought it would be obvious - but I've haven't figured it out yet.

Welcome to CleanMPG. Here is your search function. search (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/search.php)
As far as those gimmicks are concerned (yes that is what they are ;)), you will not find any benefits. On CleanMPG however, you can find benefits up to twice that of the rated epa for your vehicle, sometimes beyond.

Feel free to ask any other questions. Again welcome to the board.

Wel come to CleanMPG! There are a few members here that have the Duromax and can help you with the tuner box. A lot of people around here have them, but they use them for power and not mpg. I guess they like the smell of burning 285's. From what I have heard from them, there are favorite units for each particular engine and usually price is indicative of what they tuner can do.

I am not a Duromax owner and all of the above is from info I have been told.

I believe some tuner chips actually do improve mileage on the heavy diesels. It will still depend on the driver's right foot and good judgment, though.

I think you all are right. Check out this link. Page 3 of this thread has a photo of what is inside the SLR performance chip, which is advertised on CleanMPG. With only two connections it is impossible (highly improbable) to do what SLR claims. Get data from one sensor and send data to the computer. I don't think so.

Some tuning boxes are nothing more than a resistor which fools the computer into dumping more fuel and/or boost into the engine. Theoretically, one could also make a tuning box to do the opposite. However, no tuning box or reflash that I have seen was able to improve fuel economy anywhere close to the same degree as "retuning" the way a person drives. I'd say start out by reading Beating the EPA - The Why’s and How to Hypermile. (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1510) It's free and can save you much more fuel than a tuning box can.
