View Full Version : Incorrect Readings While Coasting in Neutral in a 6spd-Manual?

Received my Scangauge II yesterday and I've been gleefully playing with it since.

I noticed that if I'm on a downhill and I gear down to 3rd and use my engine to slow down to say, 40 km/h, my fuel consumption drops to "0 L/100 km". However, if I coast with my clutch depressed on neutral at a steady 40 km/h on a slight incline, my fuel consumption stays stead around 3 L/100 km. What's going on here? My idle TPS is "9". Shouldn't the SGII be reporting some fuel consumption regardless if I'm coasting on neutral or gearing down on a hill? Is there any way to make these two situations jive with each other?

AW, you'll want to look up the definition of "Deceleration Fuel Cutoff" -- your injectors are shutting down under certain conditions.

So does this mean that if you are going down a very SLIGHT downhill, it is better to simply let off the gas pedal on, say, 6th gear, than to be coasting with the clutch depressed or with the stick in neutral?

If you can get into fuel cut, yes. :)

But not at the expense of UNNEEDED engine braking that shortens your glide when you don't want that result.

I'd only do it if there is enough slope to maintain speed while in DFCO. If you're losing speed, you'll be better off in neutral. The lost speed will cost you gas to regain later, more gas than the little bit of idle usage from rolling in neutral.

If you have to stop at the bottom of the slope or hill I would leave in gear, if you can use all that energy after the slope it is best to glide in N with engine off you get the same benefit down the hill and more conetic energy to glide further.
