View Full Version : I don't get it ... or ... I must be naive

I have observed on some other sites ... individuals complaining about not getting good mileage out of the Lexus HS250h. So I thought ... I'd try to explain to them and provide some hints on how to get better mileage.

Of course ... critiques are coming back from individuals that don't own an HS250h ... much less a hybrid.

I don't get it. Or maybe I do and that's why I mostly participate in these forums.

Sometimes it's hard being one of the very few knowledgeable about a particular subject, some will take it in, some will criticize. Do what you know and help who you can knowing it is going somewhere instead of nowhere.

People routinely dismiss the things we've learned here at cleanmpg because the truth is uncomfortable. And the truth is that when people get lower mpg than a car is rated for, it's their own driving that is to blame.

I lurk about on car sites/forums quite a bit and, while not necessarily about this specific issue, I've had similar observations. I think these sites tend to attract a certain type of people with excessive "machismo" (for lack of a better term) who want their cars big, fast and mean. Any discussions about changing driving habits to improve mileage and just too "girly" for them.

I find the similar sort of dogma infused throughout most every review of the HS 250h. Reviewers complain that it's too sluggish for a luxury car and also complain it doesn't get the same mpg as the Prius "on which the HS is based" (which it isn't). The whole idea of a compromise design, for people who want the luxury and decent mileage totally eludes them -- "why would anyone want a Lexus that doesn't go from 0-60 in 6 seconds"?

I've not yet made the decision to get the HS, but totally appreciate your driving tips.

Hi Kgenaidy:

___We see it all the time and even from a lot of the Green auto journalists and engineers responsible for the vehicles we all own and drive today unfortunately. They are in such a hurry to get out of their cars 2-minutes earlier while pulling less than half the fuel economy it makes me wonder if they all hate their cars? It must be so or they would not be in such a hurry to get out of them, right :D

___ Argelius, have you read our 2010 Lexus HS 250h Preview (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=215415) here at CleanMPG yet? I really like the HS for the top notch lux appointments, around town FE that can only be touched by the Prius, FFH and TCH and much better suspension dynamics than the 2010 Prius.

___About the girly thing, it is funny because when these “non-girly” types try to Hypermile or at least follow the speed limits for the first time in their lives to save fuel and/or reduce emissions, their results are usually pathetic ;)

___We have an almost non-stop, RT cross country drive coming up in less than two weeks to see how 3-guys can stand to live in close proximity of one another in the HS 250h and only time will tell what that will be like at this point in time?

___Good Luck

___Wayne
