Yamaha HV-X in the flesh.
Something extraordinary came out of the 41st running of the Tokyo Autoshow this week and it was not an automobile. Known for automobile concepts that would never make it to a CEO’s desk let alone a customer’s drive, it was not one of those either. What arrived was a very unique bike that may shake up the bike world the way the Prius has shaken up the automobile world?
Setting the table
I sent a note to Michael Schmitt, Yamaha Motor Corporation’s emissions officer three weeks back asking about the rumored Yamaha Hybrid motorcycle that fell off the radar.
Hi Michael:
I was hoping to hear some more information about a 2010 Yamaha hybrid motorcycle that was rumored to be in the wings quite some time ago but have heard nothing about it over the past 6-months or so. If the project is still on, are you going to have a press release or launch of it along with some of the smaller displacement 2010’s?
I received a somewhat cryptic reply?
Hi Wayne,
Indeed rumors abound. It is best I confirm what is fact vs. rumor first.
Mike
Since we know something is in the wings but we were not sure what, expect it to show soon... And it did!
Yamaha has come through and created a bike with the first that I know of, compact full hybrid system. The engine consists of a 250 CC unit worth all of maybe 15 to 20 HP, a 20 HP Electric motor, a 300 V Li-Ion pack of unknown capacity, controller and DC to AC inverter all incorporated within the bikes framework.
As a hybrid, its environmentally friendly nature promises minimal emissions and vastly improved fuel efficiency. As a bike, it will provide the excitement of riding an excellent accelerating machine that provides a thrilling experience at each and every curve.
Something else in the video shows an upright and somewhat stretched out rider on the Sport Cruiser Hybrid. This could be not only an extremely fuel efficient motorcycle but also a comfortable cruiser to boot!
Although still only a concept, from the road ready video, this hybrid bike is a lot closer to production than Yamaha is leading us to believe and we hope to see and ride this one very soon indeed. Our only real question is will it succeed in besting the XT 250’s 104.1 mpg (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=131105) we received in its week long review ride?
Bring it on Yamaha as we are both willing and able to take this one out for a real long review ride ;)
