2010 Toyota Prius-III winning the first of many “name your country here” Car of the Year awards to come no doubt.

Toyota's third-gen Prius, which has been available in Australia for four months, has just been named Japan's car of the year at the Tokyo Auto show.

New-model Prius is the best-selling car in Japan, by itself accounting for over 10 percent of Japan's car market in September.

It's the second time the Japan Automobile Manufacturer's Association has named Prius car of the year in Japan, with Prius edging out the 2010 Insight-II in a live tally at the Auto show.

“The result for Prius in Japan is a big thumbs up for the shift to hybrid,” said Dave Buttner, Toyota of Australia's senior executive director. “The high sales in Australia and Japan show that drivers are realizing in greater numbers the need to save fuel and contribute to environmental wellbeing.”

The third generation Prius features a 21 percent increase in power and an 11.3 percent decrease in fuel consumption to 60.3 mpgUS combined on the Australian FE test cycles.

Just as significant, the Prius’ CO2 emissions of just 89g/km is the lowest emission rating of any consumer available automobile available anywhere to date.
