Wilkesboro, N.C. — State Alcohol Law Enforcement agents seized 929 gallons of moonshine Wednesday and arrested a Wilkesboro man, authorities said Friday.

Roger Lee Nance, of 1117 Shew Ridge Mission Road, was charged with possession of non-tax paid liquor, possession of non-tax-paid liquor for the purpose of selling, and possession of equipment and ingredients intended for the use in the manufacture of an alcoholic beverage.

Actually it would be E-95. When you distill ethanol it comes across as 95% ethanol+5% water. Getting rid of that last 5% is often done by extraction with benzene, and small amounts of benzene enter the ethanol phase and render the 100% ethanol highly toxic/carcinogenic to drink. Stopping at 95% is more sensible: even 95% is kinda strong to drink anyway. Plus if you do have 100% ethanol it rapidly absorbs moisture from the air and becomes 95%.

The byproduct of a chemical education.

I remember a guy trying to show off dringing Everclear, which is 95% - he passed out after one shot

OT chuck but on topic with everclear. Had a wingmate in college that we call "The Drunk" because he drank a lot and threw up essentially every time he drank. I had come home from sophomore year finals and apparently needed a drink and went to The Drunks room and asked for whatever he had and he had vodka and bloody mary mix. I mix up what was a fairly strong bloody. I took one drink and thought wtf? This is way too strong. He then embarassed told me he had been buying everclear in Iowa (can't buy it in WI) and transfering it to the vodka bottle so no one would know how much he was drinking.

I drank some down and added more bloody mix, finished the drink and that was all I needed and took a long nap.

Funny thing, the very first night of freshman year me and him went down to the Student Center bar for a few beers and he had never had more than a few beers in his life (it was 18 year old drinking back then) and he got hammered on 5 beers. I can take credit for his hard slide and first of many drunken puke sessions during his colege career.:D

One shot of everclear won't put anyone down, but a 6 ounce bloody put me out.:Banane39:

Further off topic, while most campus in the US don't even allow alcohol anymore, at my Alma Mater University of WI Platteville they have a Brewery/Brew Pub in the student center and classes on brewing. :Banane35:

We used to make gin (easy, just add juniper berries to 95% ethanol, dilute to around 50%, and distill). We found that the resulting 190 proof distilled gin was way too strong, even for making vats of daiquiris for parties, so we would cut it to 100 proof with distilled water. That was much more reasonable.

I'm not a drinker and when I had my first shot of Everclear it didn't put me down, it did a number though. I was much thinner at the time too.
