We all know the correct driving posture is both hands on the wheel at the 10:00 and 2:00 positions. But I'm curious how many of us realy do that.

View Full Version : Fun-I hope- Poll. One handed or two handed driver? tbaleno 10-26-2006, 03:56 PM We all know the correct driving posture is both hands on the wheel at the 10:00 and 2:00 positions. But I'm curious how many of us realy do that. Chuck 10-26-2006, 04:06 PM Tom, I do the 10:00 and 2:00 positions (nobody is suprized :D ), but a public service for the Texas Dept of Public safety is recommending 900 and 3:00 positions to allow for the airbag. tbaleno 10-26-2006, 04:11 PM 9:00 and 3:00 seems awkward. I'm sure air bag desingers accounted for the 10:00 and 2:00. Chuck 10-26-2006, 04:14 PM I hope so. You need to be ten inches for the steering wheel, not three feet according the the Texas Dept of Public Safety. diamondlarry 10-26-2006, 05:37 PM I'm not sure how to vote. On really long trips, like travelling between Harrisburg, PA to Elkhart, I sometimes rest my left elbow on the arm rest and hold onto the wheel at about 8:00. For shorter trips, especially in city driving, I use both hands at 10 & 2. hawkgt647 10-26-2006, 05:58 PM 8 & 4 o' clock. When shifting, 8 only. laurieaw 10-26-2006, 08:27 PM usually left hand at 10, however, it tends to go to sleep, so about 3/4 of the way to work, i am forever switching around....using both hands, right hand at 2, left on the middle of the wheel, or toward the bottom. philmcneal 10-27-2006, 02:49 AM i'm pretty casual behind the wheel..... reason becasue I drive so slow in general that my actions usually don't matter like others who drive in a speedy manner ;) tbaleno 10-27-2006, 08:59 AM I noticed I left out hands resting on the steering wheel spokes psyshack 10-27-2006, 12:51 PM I answered the last choice. I use my hands,, one and both,, knees,, one or both,, wifes,,, whoop's, never mind. Fact is I have to move around in the car alot. My back wont allow anything else. TonyPSchaefer 10-27-2006, 10:15 PM I'm usually left hand at 9:00 and right hand on a mug of coffee that's resting in the cup holder. Even when there's no coffee, my right hand normally rests in that area. At times of congestion or tight quarters, the right hand grabs at 3:00. kickflipjr 10-27-2006, 10:23 PM Left hand at 10 normally. 10 and 2 if i need to do some tricky driving. brick 10-28-2006, 04:02 PM I'm most comfortable at 9 and 3, but tend to spend lots of time with my left hand at 10 and my right hand working the gearshift. basjoos 10-28-2006, 07:54 PM On normal roads with traffic, hands at 10 and 2. On normal roads with little traffic, the previous or left only on 10 and or right only on 2 from time to time to allow my other arm to rest occasionally. On tightly winding roads, right hand at 12 with occasional help from the left if the top of the steering wheel goes past 6 during a turn in either direction. I find this "center unstable" position makes for easier driving on twisting roads. Chuck 10-28-2006, 08:25 PM I have to be one-haned occasionally to do the shifting, punching buttons. On an open road, I might be one handed for more than a few seconds. I'm sure to have been the instigator of this poll after my rants about what some call the "Rolex drape (http://www.spencerthelion.com/images/fullofit01.jpg)" (wish it was a more common term) and other excesses. During the Insight Marathon I got into a discussion on what if the steering wheel was like heavy industrial machinery and for safety reasons required two hands for the car to run. Say you do a one-handed job for 60 seconds, then the car goes into coast until you pull over or put the 2nd hand back on. It was dismissed as a bad idea, but it got me to think it's not as bad as the no cell phone laws. Bear with me a moment.... Most bad driving is one-armed. Address the lazy variants of the one-armed lean and you take care of not only most cell phone abuse, but a lot of other distracted driving too. I don't have all the answers, but it would be nice to address some of the bad driving - accidents waiting to happen. Just in case anyone thinks it - if you are here you must be driving well. vBulletin® v3.6.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
