The Three-door will be available as a BlueMotion 1.2L TDI rated at 71 mpgUS combined on the NEDC.

Volkswagen introduces its least expensive Polo, the 3-door. At its market launch this autumn, the extremely efficient and safe three-door hatch will be available with seven engine options (from 59 to 104 HP) and three equipment versions (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline). The entry-level model will be the three-door Polo 1.2 Trendline with an MSRP of $17,740 USD. It will also be available as the all-new Polo BlueMotion in three and five-door formats; the production version was shown at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September. This, the world’s most fuel-efficient car in its class with the 1.2L TDI outputting 74 HP with an estimated fuel economy rating of 71 mpgUS combined on the NEDC.

Base - Standard features

Even the base Polo Trendline is being launched with electronic stabilization program ESP, DRLs, power-assist steering, power front windows, central locking, load space area lighting, warning buzzer for light left on, drivers seat height adjuster, vanity mirrors, tinted windows and hill hold control.

Reasons for not selling this car (71 MPG version) in the US:
1. It might out sell all other VW's
2. There might not be enough inventory.
3. They would have to increase production.
4. People might demand all car companies to produce a car that gets 70+ MPG.
5. VW thinks that the US only likes fast cars with lots of HP.

Anyone else.....?

1. The market here for a $20k (my estimated Bluemotion price) 74hp subcompact isn't very big, regardless of how many mpg the car gets.
2. Making Euro diesels meet EPA regs is not cheap. It's probably not worthwhile to make the investment on a car with volumes that the Polo Bluemotion would have.

If we ever do get a Polo TDI here, it will probably be the 1.6 or whatever the most powerful engine is at the time, not the Bluemotion.
