Heading south

The new best mark for fuel consumption was logged yesterday by the A3 1.6L TDI. German journalists Michael Specht and Oliver Strohbach drove the 257 miles averaging 73.5 mpgUS. When the figures were announced in the evening, all the journalists and staff cheered!

The bad? Thick cloud cover, heavy rains and strong, biting winds were the tour’s constant companion on day 2 as well :(

The Route

Northern Norway seems withdrawn, almost hostile, jealously hiding the allure of its otherwise stunning scenery. Now that the groups and the route heads south, better days are surely ahead.

Just a few decades ago, large expanses of Norway were almost impossible to access and any journey from A to B would be arduous at best. Nowadays, the region is crisscrossed with well-built roads on which the Audi’s traversed on day 2 out of Harstad.

Green hills and narrow fjords remain the dominant scenery while to the north, south and west, Norway’s only neighbor is the sea. In fact, ninety percent of Norwegians live less than 10 miles from the coast. In Lødingen, even the Efficiency Challenge had to find its sea legs as all had to take the ferry across 14-miles of open sea.

The route is now on the Norwegian mainland and following the E6, the country’s crucial north/south artery, continues to the southernmost tip of Sweden. Nevertheless, it is characterized more with solitude than congestion. These are great conditions for steady, efficient driving.

During the afternoon, the E6 crosses the beautiful scenery of Norway’s largest national park - the Saltfjell plateau. The route frequently takes the group through picture postcard gorges with tumbling streams and deciduous woodland along the way. At 66 degrees and 33 minutes latitude, the road passes through the Arctic Circle – that magical line on which the sun doesn’t fully set on the summer solstice or rise during the winter solstice. Sadly, on this early autumn day, the sun decides to make an appearance for just a few minutes.

The "sunniest" part of the day is the evening in Mo i Rana – across the board, the consumption figures are even better than they were yesterday.

Hi All:

___Just watching the live GPS tracks and it looks like the group has arrived at their Day 3 rest stop in Trondheim, Norway. Some of the vehicles are still showing speed tracks albeit very slow while others are parked for the night so it was probably another great day. I am looking forward to the A3 reports in particular. The A4 w/ the 2.0L TDI e is not doing too bad either ;)

___Good Luck

___Wayne
