View Full Version : Week of September 21st - September 27th (Nat Avg $2.56)
Right Lane Cruiser 09-21-2009, 06:18 AM Another week, another grind!
59F, 6mph headwind from the SSE, clear:
103.1mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is steady at 106.6mpg over 911.7mi with 4 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
diamondlarry 09-21-2009, 07:08 AM While we finally had a decent temperature to start out with, I had wet roads and some occasional light rain. The temperature was 68°F and the wind was S@ 10 mph. The daily average is at 86.4 mpg.
78.4 5.8
94.5 6.9
PaleMelanesian 09-21-2009, 09:04 AM Finally the rain is gone! 77.9 mpg this morning.
That drags my tank back up 2/10 to 70.5 / 285 miles.
Right Lane Cruiser 09-21-2009, 03:59 PM The road crews on my route are starting to get on my nerves. :P
75F, 10mph tail/crosswind from the S, partly sunny:
117.0mpg for 22.7mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 106.9mpg over 934.4mi with 3 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 109.5mpg over 45.5mi
diamondlarry 09-21-2009, 08:19 PM WOW! That last segment was totally awesome! Due to circumstances all coming together just perfectly, I ended up with an extremely high 6-bar SoC when I finished segment 5. I used a very light foot and the BTA X-Gauge to travel ~3 city blocks with no fuel before I got out of town and had to fire up the ICE. This is very encouraging as segment 5 may end up being 1/2 of the trip to my wife's work; this is from our potential new house.:) This, along with some things that are in the works s far as the negotiations go, may only be a small fraction of what I can expect in the future. Let's just say that I by the end of this year, the value of 8KWhr could have some significance.;)
78.4 5.8-home to wife's work
94.5 6.9-back home
95.5 6.4-to wife's work
106 7.0-back home

208 4.9-back home
Average for today was 99.0 mpg. I should note that segment 6 was with all four of our family in the car.
Die2self 09-21-2009, 09:17 PM HOLY COW LARRY 208 MPG GREAT GOING!!!!

tank is at 7/16 with 274.2 miles (SG reports 238 miles to empty this could put my fill up on the last day of the month;))
diamondlarry 09-22-2009, 06:09 AM A fairly nice day so far. The temperature is 66°F and the wind is S@ 5mph. Average for today is 92.9 mpg.

Yeah, and I only had to wait until fall to do it. Although, with winter coming up, I kind of hope that trend continues.:p
PaleMelanesian 09-22-2009, 07:58 AM 72.4 home last night.
79.6 this morning.
Compare those good weather results to my tank average, 71.0. That's how rainy weather affects mpg. :(
Right Lane Cruiser 09-22-2009, 04:06 PM It is really hard to come back from a 1/4mi stretch of dirt road. :( Oh yes they did. Nothing but dirt now. :ccry:

113.9mpg for 22.8mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 106.9mpg over 980.0mi with 2 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 107.3mpg over 45.5mi
I still have to head over to the doctor today but I'll take the Elantra for that.
diamondlarry 09-22-2009, 04:57 PM Not to bad so far. The daily is at 97.8 mpg and I have ~10 more miles on my prime FE route. 100 is in sight.:)

Right Lane Cruiser 09-22-2009, 10:22 PM Thanks, Jason! You're doing very well with that monster truck, too.
I keep wondering when the doctor is just going to tell me I'm "broken for life." :o
70F, 0-2mph variable wind, partly sunny:
45.6mpg for 3.6mi (Home to doctor's office)
58.1mpg for 3.6mi (Doctor's office to home)
The tank is down to 63.2mpg over 422.0mi with 9.3g left and the fuel gauge indicates 2 needle widths under 3/4.
Day Total: 51.0mpg over 7.3mi
Right Lane Cruiser 09-23-2009, 06:08 AM The road is still nothing but dirt.

105.2mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is back down to 106.9mpg over 1002.8mi with 2 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
diamondlarry 09-23-2009, 06:47 AM A fairly significant rainstorm pretty well crushed the 100+ possibility for yesterday.:( My car and rain and FE just don't play nice together.

Very low initial SoC due to last evening's trip in the rain storm didn't allow very good results this morning. Temperature was 64°F and wind was SW@ 5-10 mph. Average for today is at 89.0 mpg.
75.4 5.9
105 7.0
PaleMelanesian 09-23-2009, 08:11 AM 70.4 home last night.
77.7 this morning.
Tank steady after losing 0.2 last night in the driveway and gaining it back this morning. Explanation follows:
I've been suspicious of my low coolant temperatures - Full grille block and only in the heat of summer does it ever hit 200F on my 10 mile commute. At 70 degrees lately it's only been reaching 170 degrees max. So last night I changed the thermostat. The old one was indeed stuck open and cooling things too much.
Compare:
Yesterday morning ... 73F ambient, final water temp 168F (95F rise)
This morning .......... 67F ambient, final water temp 181F (114F rise)
:\ Still not amazing, but better. Keep in mind that the engine is only running for 5 miles of the drive, with time to cool off in between. I think newer cars have a more aggressive warmup routine.
Conclusion: for $14 in parts and an hour of labor, it's likely worth it, but only by a slim margin.
diamondlarry 09-23-2009, 12:50 PM I think there is quite a bit of potential in these routes. Segments 5 would be one typical route to my wife's work and segment 6 will more than likely be the usual route home due to the arrangement of the terrain going that direction. I am going to try one more route to her work when I go to pick her up this afternoon. I have yet one more possible route for going to her work. I also have a candidate for an alternate return route but I'm not too hopeful on the results for that one. The daily average is at 100.3 mpg with a temperature of 73°F and the wind is WNW@ 10 mph.

PaleMelanesian 09-23-2009, 01:14 PM As it says in "Beating the EPA",
Maintain your Automobile: A poorly tuned engine burns more fuel, so fuel economy will suffer if it is not in tune. Improperly aligned or under inflated tires can lower fuel economy, as can a dirty air filter or brake drag.
This is true. A functioning thermostat is giving me back my mileage. Running in warmup mode the whole trip hurts. :o
71.6 home for lunch, 90.0 back to work, average for today 79.0 / 32 miles.
diamondlarry 09-23-2009, 03:07 PM Segment 9 is looking like it may be 'the route' going to my wife's work. It was a full 6 mpg better and was 2 miles shorter. I have ~20 miles left to go to take my daughter to Church for her Youth group. The daily average is up another .5 mpg to 100.8 mpg.

Right Lane Cruiser 09-23-2009, 04:27 PM I filled today -- the error from the FCD was quite large but I'm not surprised because I didn't go for the larger volume fill and had to fill at a different pump.
77F, 3mph headwind from the NE, partly cloudy:
110.4mpg for 24.7mi (Work to Costco for gas)
125.4mpg for 2.4mi (Costco to home)
The current tank is at the second entry above with all 20 bars on the fuel gauge.

diamondlarry 09-24-2009, 05:56 AM With a temperature of 63°F and wind ENE@ 5 mph, I'm at 92.8 mpg for the day. My daughter has a bit of an odd schedule today so I am going to take her to school which means a potential for 10+ mile segments at 100+ mpg each.:)
79.5 5.8
108 6.9
Right Lane Cruiser 09-24-2009, 06:12 AM You definitely have warmer temperatures today, Larry!

66.7 / 9.4 - dr to home with kids on board. My wife went alone to the pharmacy to pick up the meds, which were not available until morning. :( Sick kid all night with no medicine.
79 mpg this morning, despite a long night.
SlowHands 09-24-2009, 08:43 AM Hello all. I'm still exchanging carbon dioxide & oxygen... but have been crushed with work, and what little free time there is if I get home before 10:00 is spent trying to do some way overdue repairs / work at the house, pay some bills, maybe get to play with the dogs and / or wife, not at the same time ;)
TorqueNada has over 170,000 miles, still going along, typical 32-36 mpg tanks, depending on destinations.
Still struggling with trying to get work, we have a few little jobs, but really really need something that has a 6-12 month duration...
Good news is that I'm now down 25.5 lbs from January :D
PaleMelanesian 09-24-2009, 08:58 AM Congratulations on the weight loss, Ken!
Right Lane Cruiser 09-24-2009, 09:24 AM I second that sentiment from Andrew!
I'm sorry work is still scarce. Not fun. :(
Take care of yourself and check in as you can!
visionseeming 09-24-2009, 11:55 AM Back to the grind for me this morning...
I had to do an ECU reset after all the driving my dad did, and so I could not NICE-ON this morning. 31.0 MPG over 12.5 Miles. The lack of being able to coast hurt quite a bit, as the temperature was good for 35. Parking this year seems like its going to be more painful than it was last year; I was lucky this morning and found exactly one parking space on the very bottom of the parking structure that is the closest from home, distance wise. I may have to find a different place this year...
diamondlarry 09-24-2009, 11:57 AM After a fairly successful trip of taking my daughter to school, the daily average is up to 100.3 mpg. This also bumped the FCD up to 99.5 mpg with just shy of 300 miles on the tank.
79.5 5.8
108 6.9
83.6 6.5
103 8.0
119 13.4
Right Lane Cruiser 09-24-2009, 03:23 PM Lookin' good, Larry!
I don't know what was up with people today but they all seemed to either want to stop in the middle of the road to chat with someone, or to park diagonally across neighborhood streets to completely block them.
77F, 2mph headwind from the N, mostly sunny:
112.5mpg for 22.3mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 106.6mpg over 82.1mi with all 20 bars still on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 106.9mpg over 44.4mi
'Lantrific is up for her turn in 1.5hrs...
diamondlarry 09-24-2009, 03:43 PM I'm done for the day. The temperature hit a high of 72°F and the wind is ENE@ 5-10 mph.

90.2 5.9-to wife's work
100 11.6-wife's work to my mom's
136 4.6-back home
Average for today was 101.1 mpg. The FCD is back up to it's max reading of 99.9. It went up the last tick ~1/4 mile from home while in a glide. The FCD has now reached what I call "boring" mode as it's not likely to change much now.:D

Right Lane Cruiser 09-24-2009, 10:17 PM Great work, Jason! :woot:
I missed getting the weather readings for my trip to the doctor, but it was likely pretty close to what it was when I got home.
On the way back, 72F, 4mph headwind from the NE, overcast:
54.6mpg for 3.6mi (Home to doctor's office)
55.6mpg for 4.0mi (Doctor's office to home)
The tank is now down to 63.1mpg over 429.6mi with 9.2g left and the guess gauge indicates one needle width over 5/8.
Day Total: 55.2mpg over 7.6mi
On the plus side, I've been approved to drop from two visits a week down to one. Improvement! :)

Right Lane Cruiser 09-25-2009, 03:24 PM I feel pretty silly because that's actually the site I pull current info from when I'm recording my runs. I never noticed the "Yesterday" tab! :o

The last two times I pushed it for distance, I was reading 0.0%...for more than a day.:D
Segment 3 pretty much killed any hope of a 100+ mpg day.:ccry: It was at that point that the wind decided to kick up to a sustained SE wind @ 15 mph with gusts to ~25 mph. This same wind kept segment 5 down lower than usual. With segment 3 this was a 45° head/cross wind and segment 5 it was a tail/cross wind. Oh well.

What a coincidence! That is going to be my first trip tomorrow too. I have closer to 10 miles to go so I'll be fully warmed and most of the in town portion is on 4-lane streets.
basjoos 09-26-2009, 07:40 PM 67mpg going to work. Drove home in heavy rain doing mostly 60 to 65mph and not doing much hypermiling since I was just trying to get home. Got 68mpg, mostly due to the wet roads reducing the coasting performance down to that of a normal car. At speeds over 55mph I rarely need to use my windshield wipers since, in all but the heaviest rains, the rain drops flow off the windshield without obscuring vision.
diamondlarry 09-27-2009, 12:51 AM A pretty good FE day today.

diamondlarry 09-27-2009, 10:21 AM Not too bad considering the cool temps of mid 50's to low 60's and the 2+ hours of sitting with no EBH. The average for the day was 96.5 mpg.
