Award winning 2010 Mazda2 shown in a 3-door hatch variant (5-doors also available). The B-Class sized sub comes equipped with an atkinsonized 1.3L as standard overseas.

Mazda’s North American Operations' president and CEO, Jim O'Sullivan, confirmed today that the Mazda2 subcompact, B-Class car will be sold in the US beginning in late 2010. It was previously announced that the car also will be sold in Canada, beginning at about the same time.

"You've asked us for it for a while now, and we've been studying the market to make sure we can make a business case for it across North America," O'Sullivan told the assembled dealers. "As consumers' tastes and attitudes toward small vehicles have changed, we now believe strongly there is a place in our lineup for a car below our current least-expensive car, the Mazda3. Mazda2 will be true to everything that makes our cars stand apart from the competition: it will be stylish, fun-to-drive and a heck of a value. In short, it will be Zoom-Zoom."

No further details were released at the meeting, other than notice that the final North American-specification Mazda2 will be unveiled to media and the public at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. Further information on specifications, content, pricing and on-sale timing will be provided closer to launch.

The Mazda2 is the base platform from which the upcoming 2011 Ford Fiesta was built. Speculation on my part but we may well see the ECOBoosted 1.6L with a 6-speed DSG/tall 5 or 6-speed MT right out of the box?

The Mazda2 has been a sales and media success in markets around the world, winning more than 50 awards and being named Car of the Year in more than 20 separate countries. Additionally, Mazda2 was named the 2008 World Car of the Year, besting all other new cars around the world.

Mazda celebrates its 40th Anniversary in the US in 2010.

Great news for lovers of small cars, who still love to drive!

Will be a hard choice though, since I think I might be leaning towards the Fiesta.

Good news, I was hoping it would come and prefer it over the Fiesta. I liked the looks of the 3-door, so hopefully it won't inherit the Mazda3's smiley face.

Why?

Why?

=Because I think I like the looks of it better.
=I like the interior better
=Initially I liked the Mazda because it was a Mazda and I'm biased towards Mazdas
=Now I think the Mazda2 interior looks a bit spartan
=there are a lot more Ford dealers than Mazda dealers, so a buyer would hypothetically be a bit less captive.

I have owned 4 Mazdas, 2 bought used, 2 bought new. The only issues of complaint was the buying process for the new ones. Typically run around of them trying to sell me what they have instead of what I want. I'm not accusing all Mazda dealers, I'm just saying that I was not happy with either of mine. Ford dealers are a little more plentiful, and I would be less hesitant to walk away in order to get what I wanted.

Today every person is in need of a less expensive and high fuel efficient car. Mazda 2 will surely satisfy the customers.

Yeah, they should have done it earlier. I wanted them import the MX-Sport way back in 04, but nope. It looked like a Mini Cooper.

Don't forget the Suzuki Swift coming to US as well. Or did Suzuki ditch that.

I think the car you're referring to was a show car, so it could have never been imported, because it was actually never produced. IIRC, it was based on the previous general Mazda2.

I had someone say on Twitter "I never knew ugly sheet-metal could be put on a Fiesta." I'm not a fan of the shape, especially if they get the new nose the 3's and 6's have.

On a side note, this is me, and a Fiesta Movement vehicle:

But that's for a different thread.

You're right. There were actually a couple of Mx-Sport concepts. Mazda did inplement some of the styling on their subcompact cars. I forget which exact models. But Mazda wasn't going into the subcompact market over here until the big boys touchdown first. Esp. when Suzuki and Ford left the market. Which is a shame!
At least GM got back with the Aveo. Only to be overtaken by the Fit and Yaris/Scions.
