Prius III - More capability with only a $1,900 premium?

Toyota is aiming to cut the cost of hybrid petrol-electric technology in half in the next three years as part of plans by the Japanese carmaker to launch a more cost-effective and profitable version of its highly successful Prius hybrid hatchback.

The plans are part of efforts by Toyota to put the technology into more of its vehicles and cement its position as the leading producer of hybrids, which it believes are part of the answer to demands for more environmentally friendly fuel-efficient cars.

Kazuo Okamoto, head of research and development at Toyota, said the company's third generation of its hybrid system would be half the size and weight of its current version, as well as cheaper.

"We are cutting the cost in half," he said. "We are convinced this is realistic. The new generation system will be quite a big surprise for everybody."

The move comes as rivals are racing to catch up on hybrid technology, as consumers look for more fuel-efficient cars in the US and more environmentally friendly ones in Europe.

The cost cut is particularly important as Toyota has been unable to pass the full cost of hybrid units - estimated by rivals at $3,000 - $4,000 per unit more than a normal petrol car - on to consumers, hurting its profit margin.

Toyota plans to increase the sale of hybrids in Europe to meet a European Commission target for cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 2009.

Very nice! I hope it is very real as toyota state as is, as well maintaining full functionally of the HSD system or perhaps improved upon!

Good for those holding out to buy a car in the future! :D!

Article does not say, but you wonder if the 3rd generation HSD has fewer parts. That would make it more reliable.

I get really nervous when I read the words "cost-effective" and " more profitable" followed by the phrase "big surprise" in a corporate PR brief.

:smilingface (52): Wayne I am really looking "Forward" to see this take place with Toyota and I am just speculating here but I have Faith that Toyota will really Shine. :)

They have not let the Public Sector down yet. (IMO)

The current HSD has about as few parts as you can get away with and
still have a drivetrain. What were you thinking of eliminating?
I'm not considering electronics here, just the mechanicals.
The only thing that might be simplified would be the final drive
which in my mind may have a few too many gearing hops in it.

Hi Hobbit:

___Definitely the electronics and the cooling package(s) for them. The JCI pack and inverter/rectifier/converter HW I have read about will be passive on the cooling front with very tight packaging requirements. Think along the lines of GM’s DualMode for the drive train (MGSets even more integrated into HSD-II) and the all-in-one power package as described for the electronics. I would not bet against a non-12V equipped Prius III in the future as well …

___Another bet is that Toyota will not be lowering the price one iota but will be increasing profits as well as capabilities? The price of the Ni-MH packs have had to come down mightily since the 97 Prius I with the reduction in the number of parts and the reduction in the price of probably every single item other then the copper wiring through today.

___All just a WAG (wild @$$ guess) on my part however?

___Good Luck

___Wayne
