By the time the third-generation Toyota Prius was released in Britain last week more than 2000 orders had been taken.
Almost 10 percent were through the scrapping scheme with drivers ready to swop old and thirsty cars for the new Prius, which Toyota claims is the world's cleanest family car because it emits only 89g/km of CO2.
The list of vehicles traded in under the scheme shows a sublime-to-the-ridiculous variety of past-it machinery -everything from a Daimler Sovereign and Mercedes-Benz SL to a Nissan Sunny and Fiat Tipo.
